Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Buildings The popularity of "High School Buildings, Volume I," which is now practically out of print, has encouraged the compiler to present this second collection of illustrations and sketch plans of American secondary schoolhouses. Even in so short a period as six years, since the earlier book appeared, there have been large changes in American secondary education and these have been reflected accurately in the design and construction of buildings. The high school has entirely outgrown its academic limitations and traditions and has broadened its influence and its curriculum. Thus, the industrial arts and household arts are no longer "basement subjects;" the natural sciences are now taught in a way to require diversified laboratories; the physical care of students has been extended to necessitate very complete gymnasia and lunch rooms; and the movement for the "wider use" of the school plant by adults has become a fixed fact which school authorities have recognized thru better auditorium and night school facilities. The high school building of the present day is far more inclusive and complicated in the number and type of activities which it serves, and the structures illustrated in the following pages bear out this statement. A departure has been made from the earlier book in the shape of text matter. This consists of articles which appeared originally in the School Board Journal and which aroused considerable attention as statements of fundamental principles in the field of high school architecture. The hearty thanks of the compiler and publishers are hereby expressed to each of the architects and engineers represented in the book. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planning Secondary School Buildings In this volume, the authors have endeavored to envisage the secondary school of the future. It will not be a standardized school. American communities will continue to plan and build to meet their local requirements. The school building will be planned to make the curriculum work. It will offer expanded opportunities for learning. It will serve, not a limited number of special minds, but will advance the individual interests of the various types of youth. It will make provision for learning the social arts as well as for growing in physical health and emotional stability. It will be the educational focus of its community serving youth and adults alike. It will become a superior educational and inspirational center for all American youth. This volume has been long in preparation. During three decades many of the Engelhardt students in school administration in Teachers College, Columbia University, participated in discussions and conferences, the results of which appear in these chapters. Architects, with whom the authors have been associated as educational consultants, have raised issues and offered suggestions that have been incorporated here for school building improvement. During the five year period, 1942-1947, N. L. Engelhardt, Sr., as Associate Superintendent of Schools of New York City in charge of'the Division of Housing and Business Administration, supervised the preparation of the New York City Manual of School Planning, modification of which has been included in several chapters. Scores of individuals contributed to the development of this manual. School board members and superintendents of schools and their staffs, who have frequently made valuable contributions to the planning of school buildings in association with the authors as educational consultants, will find many of their ideas incorporated here. Several sections of Volume VII, Planning Guides for San Francisco's School Buildings, prepared by the authors as a part of the twelve volume school building survey report of that city in 1948 have also been modified or expanded for inclusion in various chapters of this book. In their surveys of the school plant of cities in all parts of the United States, the authors have discovered unusually excellent characteristics of high school buildings, recording of which here has been felt worthwhile for future planners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American School Buildings: Being a Treatise Upon, and Designs for the Construction of School Buildings The preparation of this work has been fragmentary in the extreme; the several subjects have been treated at intervals, usually wide apart, extending over a period of twenty years; they have, as a rule, been taken up at moments when the machinery of the office was practically at a standstill, or when some special problem or incident had brought forcibly to my mind the need of radical reforms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope and Content of the District High School A curious and interesting fact in the growth of school systems may be noted here. It is that tendency to set the newly acquired studies off by themselves. The first illustration of this may be remembered by a visit to the old Latin and English high school of Boston. This building was planned by Mr. John D. Philbrick and marked an important step toward the introduction of science into the high schools. This transition left its mark on the.build ing. The two assembly rooms on the third' floor each capable of seating 800 persons would of course serve the purpose of a modern high school by uniting them into a single room capable of seating the whole school, but it was necessary at the time of erecting this building in 1877 to provide separate rooms for the classical and mathematical students, and those taking the English and science branches. These two classes of students were not allowed to assemble together! The relation which in some locali ties still lingers between Manual Training and Commercial branches and the rest of the school existed between the Classical and Science branches thirty years ago! Manual Training High Schools and Commercial High Schools were built in various cities, containing in their curricula varying amounts of academic work. They have all succeeded and have drawn students in great numbers, but the tendency of these schools has been to add more and more of academic work to their courses till some of them already have the full high school course of study contained in other schools preparing their pupils for all courses in college. Some, like those of Denver, Kansas City, Indianapolis and St. Louis were made complete at the start and they all became immediately popular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Survey of the Public Schools of Brookline, Mass, 1917 To the School Committee of Brookline: I have the honor to present herewith a report of an educational survey of your schools made under authority voted at your meeting held June 5, 1916. During the month of June of that year preliminary studies were made and a Plan of Survey was drawn and submitted for your approval. In carrying out the Plan of Survey I secured the assistance of a corps of workers each of whom had a broad knowledge of schools and school procedure in general, and in addition expert knowledge in a particular field. Though each of my colleagues gave chief attention to that phase of the work which represented his predominant interest there was more or less overlapping and thus the view of each worker was checked by one or more members of the staff as well as by the Director of the Survey who assumes full responsibility for the report as a whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Architecture: Principles and Practices When the necessity for a comprehensive book of this kind was realized by the writer, it was his first intention to offer a treatise on the planning of school buildings, written wholly from the architect's point of view. After a few months of effort it dawned upon him that in order to make the most thorough use of such information, it would be more valuable to both architect and schoolman if the organization of American schools were first discussed and emphasized as a basis for the discussion of the architectural features. Thus the application of modern school architecture to modern school development could be concisely and logically shown. This plan has been followed. Information on the organization of schools was very much needed by the writer when he first turned his attention to the architecture of school buildings, and, no doubt, such a need is felt by many others who are now approaching the subject. It must be realized that the old school, even that of five years ago, has passed just as surely as the little red school-house that once stood on the hill. In its place has already appeared the new, throbbing, spirited institution, receiving its impulse from the heart of industry, commerce, and society, which, in turn, are looking to the school for practical aid in the solving of their accumulating problems of trade, employment, and American citizenship. But this new school cannot stand alone; it must rest on the foundations and traditions of its predecessor, just as the nation depends on the securely anchored constitutional footing given to it by its founders. It is this transition which the schoolman and the architect, working together and in sympathy, must bring about with saneness and economy. The organization of the school, through the extension of its branches, has become very complex to many who are out of touch with it; to those intimately associated with it, it is seen as a clearly unified development. The writer understood, that, if the organization was to be properly presented, it should be described by those who know it best. Therefore, the collaborators were selected with much care, and their contributions are a very important part of the book. A deep debt of gratitude is felt for all the assistance these associates have given; they have entered into the work with a zeal and interest that has surpassed all anticipation. The conferences and discussions have been a great pleasure and an education in themselves. Particularly has the author profited in discussing the problems of the school with Mr. William F. Ewing, formerly Director of Business Affairs of the Technical High School, Oakland, California, whose vision of the school of the future is most delightfully hopeful; and with Dr. Edna Watson Bailey, Head of the Science Department of the University High School of the same city, who is eminently successful in arousing the interest of her students. Acknowledgment is due for the encouragement and aid so cheerfully extended by Mr. William C. Bruce, Editor of the American School Board Journal, and by Mr. W. H. Crocker, Editor of the American Architect, whose splendid journals have often been a source of valuable information; also to Mr. George M. Thiriot, Head of the Academic Department of the Technical Continuation School, Oakland, California, for his valuable assistance in editing the manuscript prepared by the writer. The author is deeply grateful to his fellow architects who have so kindly furnished photographs and drawings of their work. He hopes the book will be helpful in providing plans for schoolhouses in which the highest ideals of the American school may be more effectively realized.
