This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In highly excited Rydberg atoms, the excited electron is in a large, loosely bound orbit. Hence, in contrast with the ground states, the Rydberg states are very sensitive to external electric field and can be ionized in rather weak fields. The low ionization threshold of Rydberg states results in effective state-specific detection by the selective field ionization technique. In this thesis, high-resolution spectroscopy of Rydberg states of Rubidium using millimeter wave transitions and selective field ionization has been used as a probe of external electric and magnetic fields. Laser cooling and trapping techniques in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) are employed to have a high density and narrow velocity distribution for the atomic sample. In this work the magnetic field inhomogeneity inherent in a MOT is minimized and the stray electric field present at the trap region is compensated in order to have resolved spectra. The Stark line broadening of the spectra obtained in this work may be used to determine the electric field distribution in an expanding ultra-cold neutral plasma.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Rydberg state (46d5/2) of laser cooled 85Rb atoms has been optically excited. A fraction of these atoms has been transferred to another Rydberg state (47p3/2 or 45f5/2,7/2) to introduce resonant electric dipole-dipole interactions. The line broadening of the two-photon 46 d5/2--47d5/2 microwave transition due to the interaction of 46d5/2 with 47 p3/2 or 45f5/2,7/2 atoms has been used as a probe of the interatomic interactions. This experiment has been repeated with a DC magnetic field applied. The application of a weak magnetic field (≤ 0.6G) has reduced the line broadening due to the resonant electric dipole-dipole interaction, indicating that the interactions are suppressed by the field. Theoretical models have been developed that predict the energy shifts due to the resonant electric dipole-dipole interaction, and the suppression of interactions by magnetic fields. A novel technique for sensitive measurement of magnetic fields using the 34s1/2--34 p1/2 one-photon microwave transition has also been presented. Using this technique, it has been possible to calibrate magnetic fields in the magneto-optical trap (MOT) apparatus to less than 10mG, and put an upper bound of 17mG on any remaining field inhomogeneity.

Book excerpt: Molecules containing radioactive nuclei are discussed in detail in this work aiming at their usage as tracers for nucleosynthesis processes in the present star generation. So far, these processes can be observed in the γ-ray region via the decay of the radioactive atom. The spatial resolution of the astronomical observations is low in most cases. Here, it is proposed that precise stellar positions in the sky can be achieved using low energetic photons, emitted from molecular rotational or ro-vibrational motion. The aim of this thesis is to derive the rotational fingerprints of diatomic astrophysical relevant radioactive molecules from laboratory measurements of their stable counterparts. In case of diatomic molecules this goal can be achieved by a mass-independent Dunham approach. This method has been successfully applied to reveal the spectra of the radioactive, long-lived species 26AIF, 26AlH, 26AlO, 26AlS, 32SiO, 44TiO, and 60FeO.

Book excerpt: The spectacular progress in the field of ultracold quantum gases is intimately connected with the availability of sophisticated techniques for quantum-level control of internal states, motional states and collisional interactions. Atom chips provide such control in compact, robust, and scalable setups, which makes them attractive for both applications and fundamental studies. Here I report on experiments that use microwave near-fields, provided by a waveguide structure that is fully integrated on an atom chip. We show for the first time combined coherent manipulation of internal and motional states, realizing a trapped-atom interferometer with internal state labeling of the interferometer paths. Moreover, we use microwave near-field potentials for the preparation of spin-squeezed states for quantum-enhanced metrology. Furthermore, we developed a novel technique that uses clouds of ultracold atoms as sensitive, tunable and non-invasive probes for microwave field imaging with micrometer spatial resolution. Quantitative data extraction is relatively simple and it is possible to reconstruct the amplitudes and phases of the different microwave magnetic field components.

Book excerpt: The field of atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science underpins many technologies and continues to progress at an exciting pace for both scientific discoveries and technological innovations. AMO physics studies the fundamental building blocks of functioning matter to help advance the understanding of the universe. It is a foundational discipline within the physical sciences, relating to atoms and their constituents, to molecules, and to light at the quantum level. AMO physics combines fundamental research with practical application, coupling fundamental scientific discovery to rapidly evolving technological advances, innovation and commercialization. Due to the wide-reaching intellectual, societal, and economical impact of AMO, it is important to review recent advances and future opportunities in AMO physics. Manipulating Quantum Systems: An Assessment of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics in the United States assesses opportunities in AMO science and technology over the coming decade. Key topics in this report include tools made of light; emerging phenomena from few- to many-body systems; the foundations of quantum information science and technologies; quantum dynamics in the time and frequency domains; precision and the nature of the universe, and the broader impact of AMO science.

The advent of techniques to prepare cold and ultracold molecules and ions, to store them in optical lattices or in charged quasicristalline structures, and to use them in crossed or merged beam experiments have opened many new possibilities to study the most fundamental aspects of molecular interactions. At the same time, theoretical work has made progress in tackling these problems and accurately describing quantum effects in complex systems, and in proposing viable options to control chemical reactions at ultralow energies. Through tutorials on both the theoretical and experimental aspects of research in cold and ultracold molecular collisions, this book provides advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers with the foundations needed to understand this exciting field.
