The theory solves a reduced one-dimensional Maxwell-Vlasov equation in the form of a linear integro-differential equation using Laplace transformation. The relative amplitudes among the waveguide modes and beam modes are completely determined and enable us to determine BWO oscillation conditions. A design is made based upon this analysis including velocity spread effects. A several tens kilowatt power level gyrotron BWO may be possible and find useful applications as rf heating sources in fusion devices and as driving sources in high power gyrotron amplifiers. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical analyses, including particle-in-cell computer code simulations, are presented for the Gyrotron Backward Wave oscillator (Gyro-BWO) highpower microwave device. The Gyro-BWO has been designed, constructed, and initially tested as a frequency tunable device. The design has concentrated on a TE01, 4- to 6- GHz annular beam device. The annular beam is produced by the RAMBO pulser, which has a diode voltage of -300 to -800 kV and diode current of 1 to 20 kA. Initial results have shown that the device is operating in the backward wave mode. Initial results have also demonstrated that the device is magnetically tunable; that is, the frequency is tunable by adjusting the magnetic field. A Vlasov-type antenna is used for the extraction of the microwave signal on the diode end of the experiment, with initial power extraction of up to 2 MW ... In spite of their widespread use, however, there is as yet no single book to introduce non-specialists to this vital field. Now Gregory S. Nusinovich, an early pioneer of the gyrotron and widely regarded today as the world's leading authority on the subject, explains the fundamental physical principles upon which gyrotrons and related devices operate.
