Book excerpt: Los Alamos is investigating a number of high power microwave sources for their potential to power advanced accelerators. Included in this investigation are the large orbit gyrotron amplifier and oscillator (LOG) and the relativistic klystron amplifier (RKA). LOG amplifier development is newly underway. Electron beam power levels of 3 GW, 70 ns duration, are planned, with anticipated conversion efficiencies into RF on the order of 20 percent. Ongoing investigations on this device include experimental improvement of the electron beam optics, and computational studies of resonator design and RF extraction. Recent RKA studies have operated at electron beam powers into the device of 1.35 GW in microsecond duration pulses. The device has yielded modulated electron beam power approaching 300 MW using 3--5 kW of RF input drive. RF powers extracted into waveguide have been up to 70 MW, suggesting that more power is available from the device that we have converted to-date in the extractor. We have examined several aspects of operation, including beam bunching phenomena and RF power extraction techniques. In addition, investigations of the amplifier gain as a function of input drive, electron beam parameters and axial magnetic field strength also have been explored. The effect of ions formed during device operation also has been considered.

Book excerpt: This paper, gives an overview of the novel relativistic klystron amplifiers which are driven by an annular intense relativistic electron beam (500 kV, 10 kA range) which is modulated by an external rf source (1.3 GHz, 100 kW range). Experiments, theory, simulation and simple models are presented to illustrate the unusual properties of such devices, which result from the intense space charge of the beam. Chief among them include electrostatic insulation against vacuum breakdown at high power levels, efficient current modulation, short bunching length, and amplitude and phase stability of the output signal. Many of these unexpected features were revealed in two separate experiments: one with the lower current beam (5 kA, 2 cm beam radius), and the other one with a higher current beam (16 kA, 6.6 cm beam radius). Three gigawatts or rf power at 1.3 GHz were generated with the large diameter beam at an efficiency of 35 percent with 37 dB gain. These experiments will be reviewed, along with a combination of particle simulation results and analytic models which facilitate the interpretation. Pay special attention to the unfamiliar features of these amplifiers, and shall address the critical issues which need to be solved before such amplifiers can fulfill their potential in a wide range of applications. Keywords: High power microwaves; Relativistic klystron amplifiers; Intense beam modulation. (JHD).

We show that in the intense space-charge regime the maximum power extraction does not coincide with the maximum harmonic bunching. In addition, we show that as the beam is bunched, the additional power stored in the Coulomb fields does not add significantly to the overall power extraction. Because of these effects, the power extraction at 1.3 GHz for a 500 kV, 5 kA beam with reasonable beam-to-wall spacing is limited to around 35%. 3 refs., 17 figs.

Book excerpt: Several powerful accelerators and storage rings are being considered that will require tens or even hundreds of megawatts of continuous rf power. The economics of such large machines can be dictated by the cost and efficiency of the rf amplifiers. The overall design and performance of such narrow-band amplifiers, operating in the 50- to 1500-MHz region, are being theoretically studied as a function of frequency to determine the optimum rf amplifier output power, gain, efficiency, and dc power requirements. The state of the art for three types of amplifiers (gridded tubes, klystrons, and gyrocons) is considered and the development work necessary to improve each is discussed. The gyrocon is a new device, hence its various embodiments are discussed in detail. The Soviet designs are reviewed and the gyrocon's strengths and weaknesses are compared to other types of microwave amplifiers. The primary advantages of the gyrocon are the very large amount of power available from a single device and the excellent efficiency and stable operation. The klystron however, has much greater gain and is simpler mechanically. At very low frequencies, the small size of the gridded tube makes it the optimum choice for all but the most powerful systems.

Book excerpt: Los Alamos is extending the performance of the Friedman-type, high-current relativistic klystron amplifier (RKA) to the microsecond regime while attempting to achieve the gigawatt-level peak power capability that has been characteristic of the RKA at shorter pulse lengths. Currently the electron beam power into the device is about 1 GW in microsecond duration pulses, with an effort underway to increase the beam power to 2.5 GW. To date the device has yielded an rf modulated electron beam power of 350 MW, with up to 50 MW coupled into waveguide. Several aspects of RKA operation under investigation that affect RKA beam bunching efficiency and amplifier gain include cavity tuning, beam diameter, beam current, and input rf drive power, and the development of an output coupler that efficiently couples the microwave power from the low impedance beam into rectangular waveguide operating in the dominant mode. Current results from experimental testing and code modelling are presented. 5 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: In the past, linear accelerators at frequencies below 3 GHz have been driven by klystrons or gridded tubes, with most of the small electron accelerators using conventional magnetrons. During the past few years, there have been several new rf amplifier developments that could be advantageous to the linear accelerator designer. Among these new devices are the cathode-driven crossed-field amplifier, Klystrode, high-power solid-state amplifier, lasertron, multiple-beam klystron, phase-locked magnetron, and a depressed collector for a high-power klystron. All of these devices are being worked on at this time. Each can contribute to a linear accelerator system by supplying better efficiency, lower cost, higher power, or longer life. This paper will review the present status of each device and, where current test data are available, they will be reviewed. 19 refs., 13 figs.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA) is the last block in a transmitter chain. It amplifies the signal to the target power and drives the antenna. The power amplifier consumes the largest portion of the transmitter current consumption budget, and any power saving in this block will significantly improve the overall system efficiency. This is especially critical in battery-operated portable wireless communication systems such as cellular phones, PDA's and laptops. There is a trade-off between efficiency and linearity in power amplifiers. Non-switching power amplifiers efficiency increases as the output power increases, but so does the amplifier distortion. This is more problematic in modern wireless communication systems, where spectrally efficient and high data rate modulations are used and the linearity requirement is hard to meet. The two common approaches of backing-off the output power and adding a linearization scheme have their own challenges. The first one results in efficiency loss and the second one adds to the system complexity and has design challenges for wideband applications. The design of highly efficient and linear RF power amplifiers has been the subject of several studies. Different techniques have been proposed to overcome the challenge. Dynamic control of the power amplifier quiescent current, dynamic control of the load impedance, output harmonic control and dynamic supply voltage control (envelope tracking) are the popular proposed techniques. Despite the fact that the envelope tracking technique has gained momentum as an attractive efficiency enhancement method for handset applications, its implementation still faces challenges. This technique needs a high efficiency envelope amplifier to achieve good overall efficiency. The design of a small, efficient and wideband envelope amplifier is very challenging. Usually these amplifiers require external components and if they are in the switching mode they can add disturbance to the rest of the system. This research focuses on a technique that overcomes this main challenge of the ET amplifier design and is organized as follows : Chapter 1 is the introduction and discusses the motivation of this research and some of the prior art. Chapter 2 explains the proposed technique to enhance the RF power amplifiers efficiency in high peak-to-average power ratio applications. This technique is based on controlling the baseband drain impedance by adding an envelope termination to the PA supply, and applying the baseband envelope signal to the input. As a result, the amplifier operates closer to its saturated region for all envelope amplitudes, and its efficiency is improved. A digital predistortion scheme is implemented to compensate for the linearity degradation of the proposed technique. A 1.95GHz HFET power amplifier exhibits an improvement in peak PAE from 40% to 56% for a two-tone input, from 33% to 42% for an uplink WCDMA with one dedicated physical data channel and from 27% to 32% for an uplink WCDMA with six dedicated physical data channels using the proposed technique. Chapter 3 shows some improvements to the proposed technique including adding envelope equalization. The envelope equalization also improves the amplifier linearity since it reduces the distortion from clipping the output signal due to non-ideal dynamic supply. The linearity of the implemented amplifier is studied in a large-signal fashion. This technique improves the maximum efficiency from 28% to 40% for an uplink WCDMA signal with six dedicated physical data channels and the maximum linear efficiency from 21% to 28%. Also, a scheme to vary the DC power supply with the average power to maintain high efficiency down to a low average power region is proposed. Chapter 4 studies envelope feedback systems stability. The stability criteria are derived based on the Lyapunov stability theorem for time-varying systems and the tool of linear matrix inequality (LMI). The effects of system parameters on the stability are investigated. The system is simulated in Simulink and implemented, and stability boundaries predicted by LMI are in good agreement with the simulation and measurement results. Chapter 5 concludes the dissertation and suggests some future work.
