Book excerpt: Stabilizability of an interconnected system with respect to LTI decentralized control law and also general (nonlinear and time-varying) control law is investigated in the literature, by introducing the notions of decentralized fixed mode (DFM) and quotient fixed mode (QFM). Since the existing methods aiming at identifying these fixed modes are ill-conditioned, two graph-theoretic approaches are proposed here to obtain the DFMs and QFMs of a system in a more efficient manner. In addition, it is asserted that the nonzero and distinct DFMs of a system can be eliminated by means of a proper sampled-data controller. On the other hand, decentralized overlapping control as a more advanced form of structurally constrained control systems is investigated thoroughly. An onto mapping between the decentralized control and the decentralized overlapping control is introduced, which makes the decentralized control design techniques applicable to the decentralized overlapping problem. A systematic method is proposed to check stabilizability of general proper (as opposed to strictly proper) structurally constrained controllers with respect to LTI and non-LTI systems. It is to be noted that the extension of the existing techniques to this general problem not only is non-trivial, but not feasible indeed. Besides, robust stability of the closed-loop system in the presence of polynomial uncertainties is also investigated and a necessary and sufficient condition in the form of sum-of-squares (SOS) is presented. It is to be noted that this problem has been investigated in the literature for the past ten years but prior to this work, only sufficient conditions existed for robust stability of this type of systems. The results presented in this treatise are applied to several benchmark examples, including formation flying of three UAVs, to demonstrate the efficacy of this work.

Book excerpt: Decentralized Control and Filtering provides a rigorous framework for examining the analysis, stability and control of large-scale systems, addressing the difficulties that arise because dimensionality, information structure constraints, parametric uncertainty and time-delays. This monograph serves three purposes: it reviews past methods and results from a contemporary perspective; it examines presents trends and approaches and to provide future possibilities; and it investigates robust, reliable and/or resilient decentralized design methods based on a framework of linear matrix inequalities. As well as providing an overview of large-scale systems theories from the past several decades, the author presents key modern concepts and efficient computational methods. Representative numerical examples, end-of-chapter problems, and typical system applications are included, and theoretical developments and practical applications of large-scale dynamical systems are discussed in depth.

Book excerpt: This report considers the problem of designing decentralized control systems for Large Space Structures to satisfy robustness and performance requirements for multiple system configurations. The problem is motivated by the fact that such structures will have to be assembled in space. A partially assembled structure will need some real-time control so that it maintains its' station, performs partial functions, and damps oscillations during assembly. Completely reprogramming the control computers each time a subassembly is incorporated in the structure is likely to be impractical. A more sound engineering approach would be to require the same control system design to satisfy performance requirements for the partial assemblies and to maintain stability for the completely assembled structure. Performance can then be restored for the full assembly by applying an outer loop (hierarchical) control or adjusting the decentralized design parameters.

Book excerpt: This dissertation deals with performance analysis and robust stabilizability verification of large-scale interconnected systems with respect to the class of linear time-invariant (LTI) decentralized controllers. These problems are formulated and tackled in four phases. First, an interconnected system with some unstable decentralized fixed modes (DFM) is considered. It is well-known that there is no stabilizing LTI decentralized controller for such a system; hence, a method is proposed to change the structure of the controller from decentralized to a proper overlapping form, with respect to which the system is stabilizable. This change in the control configuration is carried out by introducing some interactions among the isolated controllers, which leads to the elimination of the undesirable DFMs. The approach utilized in this thesis is based on the graph theory and, in fact, transforms the knowledge of the system into a number of bipartite graphs. A simple combinatorial algorithm is subsequently proposed to address the problem under consideration. The second problem investigated here is the characterization of all classes of LTI structurally constrained controllers with respect to which a given interconnected system has no fixed modes. Similar to the ideas and notions proposed to handle the preceding problem, an efficient method is presented to tackle the problem in this case. Since establishing a transmission link between a pair of local controllers would certainly incur cost, an implementation expenditure is attributed to each possible link. The proposed approach can also be used to attain the implementation cost associated with any suitable class of controllers obtained. As a by-product of this result, all classes of LTI stabilizing structurally constrained controllers with the minimum implementation cost can be characterized accordingly. A LTI structurally constrained control system is considered next, which is subject to parametric uncertainties. Moreover, a region of uncertainty in the form of a semi-algebraic set is envisioned to parametrize the range of variations for uncertain parameters. It is asserted that if the system is stabilizable via a given constrained controller at the nominal point, then it is almost always stabilizable at any operating point in the region of uncertainty. In other words, the points for which the system has some persistent fixed modes lie on an algebraic variety. A method is subsequently proposed to derive this variety. In the end, it is assumed that a stabilizing decentralized controller is designed for a pseudo-hierarchical large-scale system based on its hierarchical approximation. A LQ cost function is defined to evaluate the effectiveness of this indirect controller design for the system. It is shown that a reasonably tight upper bound on this performance index can be straightforwardly obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem with only three variables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-scale system is composed of several interconnected subsystems. For such a system it is often desired to have some form of decentralization in the control structure, since it is typically not realistic to assume that all output measurements can be transmitted to every local control station. Problems of this kind can appear in electric power systems, communication networks, large space structures, robotic systems, economic systems, and traffic networks, to name only a few. Typical large-scale control systems have several local control stations which observe only local outputs and control only local inputs. All controllers are involved, however, in the control operation of the overall system. The focus of this book is on the efficient control of interconnected systems, and it presents systems analysis and controller synthesis techniques using a variety of methods. A systematic study of multi-input, multi-output systems is carried out and illustrative examples are given to clarify the ideas.

Book excerpt: Designing a controller for large scale systems usually involve a high degree of complexity and computation ability. When talking about decentralized interconnected systems, the complexity and computation are not the only snags encountered when designing the controllers; channel bandwidth is another constraint to design procedures. The stability and optimization process can shift dramatically when an external noise is affecting the measurements at the output sensors or disturbing the controlled input. The investigated model in this research of a large scale stochastic decentralized interconnected system was a reduced order quasi-steady state model of the original system using singular perturbation techniques. Two methods of analyzing and minimizing the cost function of the full order system were proposed. The first method was to design a controller by standard stochastic control theory techniques using LQG approach and Kalman filter design. In the second method, game theory strategies were applied to the decentralized interconnected singularly perturbed systems. A Stackelberg game was designed and implemented to the reduced order model with one of the controllers designated leader in the game. The minimization of conditions and constraints reaches a solution which applies Lyapunov equations coupled with constraints equations to optimize the performance index of the reduced-order and the full order system.
