Linguists are divided on the degree of abstractness admissible in phonological representation. While some would impose far-reaching restrictions on admissible abstractness, others have felt that such restrictions are unrealistic. This monograph offers extensive arguments for admitting a high degree of abstractness in phonology. The empirical material on which the monograph is based is the phonology of modern Polish. A substantial portion of the phonological rules of the language are studied and their theoretical implications are investigated in detail. Although there exists a rich literature on Polish phonology, very little of it has been written with clear theoretical issues in mind, and practically none of it is in English. The results obtained in the monograph, especially with regard to the vowel-zero alternations hold not only for Polish, but with some straightforward modifications can be shown to hold for all other Slavic languages as well. The book consists of four chapters. The first chapter examines critically and rejects the restrictions on abstractness in phonology that have been advanced by proponents of Natural Generative Phonology, in particular Hooper's &"true generalization condition.&" The second chapter considers the vowel-zero alternations in Polish and shows that the facts require an abstract analysis including the postulation of two abstract vowels that do not appear directly in phonetic forms of the language. The proposed vowel inventory is exploited in the third chapter which deals with one of the most complex problems of Polish phonology, the alternations of the nasal vowels. The proposed vowel inventory also plays a central role in the final chapter, which deals with the [o-u] alternations.

Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive grammatical description of Uchumataqu, the language of the Uru of Lake Titicaca in north-western Bolivia. Uchumataqu forms part of the isolated language family Uru-Chipaya but has been influenced to differing degrees by Aymara, Quechua, and Spanish. The Uchumataqu language became extinct around 1950. Although several researchers had documented the language during the first half of the twentieth century, much of the material remained unstudied. This book is the first to take into consideration every previous study of the Uchumataqu language. The grammatical description is based on former publications and archive material and seeks to describe Uchumataqu as comprehensively as possible. It includes a description of the phonological system of Uchumataqu as well as a presentation of its morphological processes. The nominal and verbal systems are discussed in detail. Particular attention is paid to the complex person-marking system of Uchumataqu, of which person-marking clitics are a vital part that distinguishes Uchumataqu from the neighbouring Aymara and Quechua language. Another important issue are nominalisation and subordination strategies as well as adjectives which form a word class of its own. The relationship of Uchumataqu with the surrounding Aymara and Quechua language, and particularly the way in which influence on Uchumataqu was exerted, are described in detail. The appendices contain a transcription of the afore unpublished manuscripts of Max Uhle and Walter Lehmann on Uchumataqu as well as a comparative and diachronic dictionary. This book is aimed at linguists from all disciplines but is of equal interest to anthropologists, Americanists, historical linguists, typologists, and linguists with a special interest in Andean studies. Methodological issues, especially sampling, are discussed at length. Standard negation – the basic structural means languages have for negating declarative verbal main clauses – is typologized from a new perspective, paying attention to structural differences between affirmatives and negatives. In symmetric negation affirmative and negative structures show no differences except for the presence of the negative marker(s), whereas in asymmetric negation there are further structural differences, i.e. asymmetries. A distinction is made between constructional and paradigmatic asymmetry; in the former the addition of the negative marker(s) is accompanied by further structural differences in comparison to the corresponding affirmative, and in the latter the correspondences between the members of (verbal etc.) paradigms used in affirmatives and negatives are not one-to-one. Cross-cutting the constructional-paradigmatic distinction, asymmetric negation can be further divided into subtypes according to the nature of the asymmetry. Standard negation structures found in the 297 sample languages are exemplified and discussed in detail. The frequencies of the different types and some typological correlations are also examined. Functional motivations are proposed for the structural types – symmetric negatives are language-internally analogous to the linguistic structure of the affirmative and asymmetric negatives are language-externally analogous to different asymmetries between affirmation and negation on the functional level. Relevant diachronic issues are also discussed. The book is of interest to language typologists, descriptive linguists and to all linguists interested in negation.
