Book Synopsis High-energy Phenomena in Electric Discharges in Dense Gases by : Leonid P. Babich
Download or read book High-energy Phenomena in Electric Discharges in Dense Gases written by Leonid P. Babich and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes research of strongly nonlocal processes in dense weakly ionized atmospheric and laboratory plasmas beginning with the prediction of C. Wilson in 1925. Fundamentals of the nonlocal model of breakdown and discharges in dense gases formulated by Prof. Babich in the 1970s underlie experimental research and numerical simulations of discharges in dense gases in very strong electric fields. Earlier unknown phenomena and gas-discharge dependencies discovered by Prof. Babich and his colleagues have been the focus of international attention and interest.
Book Synopsis Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges by : Uwe Kortshagen
Download or read book Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges written by Uwe Kortshagen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book resulted from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges,” held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on May 19-23, 1997. Glow discharges have found widespread applications in many technological processes from the manufacture of semiconductors, to recent developments in na- technology, to the traditional fields of gas lasers, and discharge lamps. Consequently, the interest in the physics of glow discharges has experienced yet another resurgence of interest. While the non-equilibrium character of glow discharges is widely accepted, the opinion still prevails that the main features can be captured by fluid models, and that kinetic treatments are only required for the understanding of subtle details. The erroneousness of this belief is demonstrated by the failure of fluid models to describe many basic features of glow discharges such as, for instance, electrode phenomena, striations, and collisionless heating effects. An adequate description of glow discharges thus has to be of kinetic nature.

Book Synopsis "Sprites, Elves and Intense Lightning Discharges" by : Martin Füllekrug
Download or read book "Sprites, Elves and Intense Lightning Discharges" written by Martin Füllekrug and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-27 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particularly intense lightning discharges can produce transient luminous events above thunderclouds, termed sprites, elves and jets. These short lived optical emissions in the mesosphere can reach from the tops of thunderclouds up to the ionosphere; they provide direct evidence of coupling from the lower atmosphere to the upper atmosphere. Sprites are arguably the most dramatic recent discovery in solar-terrestrial physics. Shortly after the first ground based video recordings of sprites, observations on board the Space Shuttle detected sprites and elves occurring all around the world. These reports led to detailed sprite observations in North America, South America, Australia, Japan, and Europe. Subsequently, sprites were detected from other space platforms such as the International Space Station and the ROCSAT satellite. During the past 15 years, more than 200 contributions on sprites have been published in the scientific literature to document this rapidly evolving new research area.

Book Synopsis Moscow DMZ: The Story of the International Effort to Convert Russian Weapons Science to Peaceful Purposes by : Glenn E. Schweitzer
Download or read book Moscow DMZ: The Story of the International Effort to Convert Russian Weapons Science to Peaceful Purposes written by Glenn E. Schweitzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Soviet Union was collapsing in late 1991, reports began to reach the West about agents "shopping" for weapons systems - and weapons scientists - in the beleaguered Soviet military-industrial complex. In response, the United States, the European Community, and Japan, in cooperation with the Russian government, created a program to reemploy Soviet scientific personnel in civilian projects dealing with the legacy of the Soviet system - a polluted environment, unsafe nuclear power facilities, and economic underdevelopment. In this fascinating first-person account, the American environmental scientist who led the effort to establish the International Science and Technology Center in Moscow tells the diplomatic, scientific, and human story behind a remarkable post-Cold War conversion initiative.
