Book excerpt: Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are powerful explosions that emit most of their energy, as their name suggests, in gamma-rays of typical energies of about 1 MeV. This emission lasts for about two minutes or less and it is called the prompt emission. The isotropic energy radiated in GRBs is equivalent to the energy that the Sun will radiate in its entire lifetime. After decades of studying this cosmological phenomenon, we have come to learn that it involves a collimated and relativistic jet. Also, we know that they radiate energy in the X-ray, optical and radio bands for days, weeks and years, respectively, which is called the afterglow. Recently, NASA's Fermi Satellite was launched and, in addition to MeV photons, it detected GeV photons from these astrophysical sources. We show that these GeV photons are produced when the GRB jet interacts with the medium that surrounds it: the external forward shock model. We arrive at this conclusion not only by studying the GeV emission, but also by studying the afterglow observations (Chapter 2). We corroborate this model by studying the electron acceleration in the external forward shock model and find that electrons can radiate at the maximum observed energy of ~ 10 GeV (Chapter 3). We also provide an extensive analysis of the most recent afterglow observations of GRB 090902B within the same framework of an external forward shock origin. We find that the data for this burst requires a small deviation from the traditionally used power-law electron energy distribution, however, our previous results remain unchanged (Chapter 4). To conclude, we use the end of the prompt emission phase, which exhibits a steep X-ray temporal decay, to constrain the behavior of the central engine responsible for launching the relativistic jet (Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: Abstract Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transient events in the observed Universe. However, there is no direct observational evidence for what exactly drives a GRB. The most widely accepted model for these cosmic events is the fireball model where it is thought that a substantial fraction of the kinetic energy of the source is converted to gamma-radiation by shock accelerated electrons emitting synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation. The acceleration of protons in the gamma-ray emitting region of the GRB has been hypothesized as well. In this hadronic acceleration model, it is predicted that protons may interact with gamma-ray photons to produce a burst of neutrinos at energy ∼10^14 eV during prompt emission and energy ∼10^18 eV during afterglow emission. Several experimental searches for these high energy neutrinos have been conducted and no GRB neutrinos have yet been found. The analytical prediction for neutrino flux has been replaced with a more thorough numerical prediction for neutrino flux. The neutron model of GRBs, where only neutrons can escape the GRB and reach Earth as cosmic rays, has been ruled out by the experimental work of IceCube and ANTARES. Upgraded versions of current experiments such as IceCube, ANTARES, ANITA and ARA, as well as new experiments such as KM3NeT, are preparing to probe and further constrain the fireball paradigm of GRB neutrino production. Book excerpt: This thesis studies the broadband behaviour of GRBs by fitting a detailed spectral/temporal model to both the prompt and afterglow hard and soft X-ray emission observed by the Swift satellite. The prompt emission is decomposed into pulses which are fitted individually while the afterglow is modelled using a smoothly varying broad pulse which evolves into a power-law decay at late times. Using this model a comprehensive study of GRB 080310 is presented and followed by similar analyses of GRB 061121, GRB 080810 and GRB 081008. The optical behaviour is found to be inconsistent with the high-energy model: a spectral break between the X-ray and optical band is necessary and for many prompt pulses the self-absorption mechanism is required. The latter three bursts have optical afterglows that are shown to be inconsistent with those fitted to the X-ray regime, peaking earlier in the lower energy bands and requiring a low-energy spectral break. The prompt optical emission seen from GRB 061121 has pulse-like features which match reasonably well with contemporaneous high-energy features, but have longer durations. The same model was used to study the expected evolution of GRB properties when moved to higher redshifts. Using a sample of bright Swift GRBs, the changes in measured duration with redshift were found to be driven by a combination of time dilation, gradual loss of pulse tails and sudden loss of pulses as the flux falls below instrumental sensitivity. A realistic sample of synthetic bursts is produced which, when simulated at high redshift, are found to be significantly longer in duration that the observed high redshift GRBs. Also demonstrated is that several bright bursts seen by Swift could be detected if they occurred at a redshift > 10 encouraging the use of GRBs as probes of the early Universe.

GRBs are believed to be the product of shock waves generated in a relativistic outflow from the demise of extremely massive stars and/or binary neutron star mergers. The outflow undeniably encounters the ambient medium of the progenitor object and another shock wave is set up. A forward shock propagates into the medium and a reverse shock propagates through the ejecta. This "external" shock dissipates the kinetic energy of the ejecta in the form of radiation via synchrotron losses and slows the outflow eventually to a non-relativistic state.
