Book excerpt: Radiotherapy using fast electrons, whether alone or in combination with high-voltage, has met with increasing interest in the last few years. This book provides a useful account of the present state of knowledge and critically discusses where an improvement of results is certain or prob able - in contrast to results with radiotherapy using photons alone. The work also considers additional improvements which might be expected to accrue from past experience~ and particular attention is paid to the nature and possible dangers of electron therapy. Book excerpt: Electron linear accelerators are being used throughout the world in increasing numbers in a variety of important applications. Foremost among these is their role in the treatment of cancer. Commercial uses include non-destructive testing by radiography, food preservation, product sterilization and radiation processing of materials such as plastics and adhesives. Scientific applications include investigations in radiation biology, radiation chemistry, nuclear and elementary particle physics and radiation research. This manual provides authoritative guidance in radiation protection for this important category of radiation sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the tremendously rapid development of the sciences publi cations of congresses and meetings are frequently out-of-date by the time they appear in print. We endeavoured to publish the report of the Sym posium in Montreux in as short a time as possible. In order to reduce the cost, the manuscripts hat to be confined to few pages at the most and it was absolutely necessary to limit the number of illustrations. For the Symposium in question we invited all those authors of whom we knew they were acquainted with the medicinal application of fast elec trons to take part in a discussion covering their particular field of interest. Other lectures were also admitted without exception. Unfortunately on account of various extrinsic reasons the time between the application to take part in the Symposium and the Meeting itself was far too short which fact prevented some well-known scientists from coming to Montreux. In cases where no speaker was to be found for a certain subject Bernese and Milano Institutes (Doc. Dr. med. P. L. CaVA) filled the gap whenever and wherever possible.

They often provide a unique option in treatment of superficial tumors that are less than 5 cm deep. The most clinically useful electron beams have energies ranging from 6 MeV to 15 MeV. The principal applications of electrons are: (a) in the treatment of skin and lip cancers; (b) in chest wall irradiation for breast cancer; (c) in administering boost doses to nodes; and (d) in the treatment of head and neck cancers. This work focuses on the commissioning and QA of two types of treatment planning systems (Precise 3D and Focus 2D Plan) and it is carried out at Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Department Mansoura University Hospitals. The main aim of the work is the verification and validation process of the commissioning data for the TPS of advanced radiation therapy systems in two and three dimensions (Precise 3D and Focus 2D Plan) that are used to determine the radiotherapy treatment plane. The commissioning data were measured for all energies 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 MeV linac (Elekta Precise). A comparison between the calculated PDD generated by TPSs and the experimental measureme

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing students with an in-depth account of the astrophysics of high energy phenomena in the Universe, the third edition of this well-established textbook is ideal for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses in high energy astrophysics. Building on the concepts and techniques taught in standard undergraduate courses, this textbook provides the astronomical and astrophysical background for students to explore more advanced topics. Special emphasis is given to the underlying physical principles of high energy astrophysics, helping students understand the essential physics. The third edition has been completely rewritten, consolidating the previous editions into one volume. It covers the most recent discoveries in areas such as gamma-ray bursts, ultra-high energy cosmic rays and ultra-high energy gamma rays. The topics have been rearranged and streamlined to make them more applicable to a wide range of different astrophysical problems.
