Download or read book Hidden Depths written by Penny Spikins and published by White Rose University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n Hidden Depths, Professor Penny Spikins explores how our emotional connections have shaped human ancestry. Focusing on three key transitions in human origins, Professor Spikins explains how the emotional capacities of our early ancestors evolved in response to ecological changes, much like similar changes in other social mammals. For each transition, dedicated chapters examine evolutionary pressures, responses in changes in human emotional capacities and the archaeological evidence for human social behaviours. Starting from our earliest origins, in Part One, Professor Spikins explores how after two million years ago, movement of human ancestors into a new ecological niche drove new types of collaboration, including care for vulnerable members of the group. Emotional adaptations lead to cognitive changes, as new connections based on compassion, generosity, trust and inclusion also changed our relationship to material things. Part Two explores a later key transition in human emotional capacities occurring after 300,000 years ago. At this time changes in social tolerance allowed ancestors of our own species to further reach out beyond their local group and care about distant allies, making human communities resilient to environmental changes. An increasingly close relationship to animals, and even to cherished possessions, appeared at this time, and can be explained through new human vulnerabilities and ways of seeking comfort and belonging. Lastly, Part Three focuses on the contrasts in emotional dispositions arising between ourselves and our close cousins, the Neanderthals. Neanderthals are revealed as equally caring yet emotionally different humans, who might, if things had been different, have been in our place today. This new narrative breaks away from traditional views of human evolution as exceptional or as a linear progression towards a more perfect form. Instead, our evolutionary history is situated within similar processes occurring in other mammals, and explained as one in which emotions, rather than ‘intellect’, were key to our evolutionary journey. Moreover, changes in emotional capacities and dispositions are seen as part of differing pathways each bringing strengths, weaknesses and compromises. These hidden depths provide an explanation for many of the emotional sensitivities and vulnerabilities which continue to influence our world today.

Jake Seabrook, a human descendant of Medina, the Atlantean Goddess of Love, never asked for magical powers. Unfortunately, not only does he have them, but they are also growing stronger as more of the Atlantean gods wake from their long slumber. When Jake develops the power to hear the thoughts of anyone thinking about love, lust or sex, it is strange and embarrassing, but also reveals cracks in his relationship with his mermen lovers, Kyle and Finn. If they are going to continue to live as a ménage, they will have to learn to be honest with each other. With Jake's powers out of control and their relationship on shaky ground, the last thing any of them need is a crisis in the sunken city. The Atlantean gods want to regain the powers they lost when the Atlantean people were banished from the city, but the solution will leave the mer who live in the city no choice but to evacuate and search for a new home or risk exposing the existence of the mer to the whole world. Kyle and Finn return to Atlantis to help with the evacuation and insure the safety of their families, but time is not on their side. When Atlantis rises, the consequences could tear apart their ménage forever.
Book Synopsis Philosophy of Time and Perceptual Experience by : Sean Enda Power
Download or read book Philosophy of Time and Perceptual Experience written by Sean Enda Power and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the important yet neglected relationship between the philosophy of time and the temporal structure of perceptual experience. It examines how time structures perceptual experience and, through that structuring, the ways in which time makes perceptual experience trustworthy or erroneous. Sean Power argues that our understanding of time can determine our understanding of perceptual experience in relation to perceptual structure and perceptual error. He examines the general conditions under which an experience may be sorted into different kinds of error such as illusions, hallucinations, and anosognosia. Power also argues that some theories of time are better than others at giving an account of the structure and errors of perceptual experience. He makes the case that tenseless theory and eternalism more closely correspond to experience than tense theory and presentism. Finally, the book includes a discussion of the perceptual experience of space and how tenseless theory and eternalism can better support the problematic theory of naïve realism. Philosophy of Time and Perceptual Experience originally illustrates how the metaphysics of time can be usefully applied to thinking about experience in general. It will appeal to those interested in the philosophy of time and debates about the trustworthiness of experience.
Download or read book Mind Is Flat written by Nick Chater and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a radical reinterpretation of how the mind works, an eminent behavioral scientist reveals the illusion of mental depth Psychologists and neuroscientists struggle with how best to interpret human motivation and decision making. The assumption is that below a mental “surface” of conscious awareness lies a deep and complex set of inner beliefs, values, and desires that govern our thoughts, ideas, and actions, and that to know this depth is to know ourselves. In this profoundly original book, behavioral scientist Nick Chater contends just the opposite: rather than being the plaything of unconscious currents, the brain generates behaviors in the moment based entirely on our past experiences. Engaging the reader with eye-opening experiments and visual examples, the author first demolishes our intuitive sense of how our mind works, then argues for a positive interpretation of the brain as a ceaseless and creative improviser.

Book Synopsis Rune3Master - Into the Depths by : Brad Lorenz
Download or read book Rune3Master - Into the Depths written by Brad Lorenz and published by RuneMaster Publications. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Seldom is humanity shocked by a revelation so profound.' We are now in the twenty-first century and the runes are an enigma of the modern age. Amid an extensive body of work that has enveloped these ancient glyphs, none consider the importance of geometry; to analyse their shapes for consistencies that may reveal an underlying intelligence. In the eyes of science, runic geometry has little value. Science has conceptualised the rune without considering the significant function of geometry - a naive and erroneous approach. Runic symbols are predominantly linear (built up from a mixture of vertical and/or diagonal lines that coalesce to give the rune its characteristic shape). While science believes this peculiarity is consistent with the period of carving in wood or stone, it is thought their shapes encode an archaic wisdom, a knowledge that has been sought after for well over a thousand years, and attempts to unlock this illusive code continue today. In this ground-breaking text, I unlock this legendary code. I reveal how the runes have been misconstrued over the centuries to what we find today. Contained within them are the remnants of an ancient geometric cipher and a myriad of arcane information, the likes of which has not been seen for over two thousand years, and the implications are staggering.
