Book excerpt: This Proceedings contains plenary lectures and selected poster communications spanning the entire field of catalysis --- from catalysis by protons to catalysis by multinuclear clusters and ultra-disperse particles. It includes discussion of the recent results of fundamental research conducted at the juncture between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. New ideas, based on modern physical and quantum-chemical methods, and concerning the mechanism of formation and functioning of active sites of catalysts are suggested. It is shown how the cyclic change of atomic distribution in the active site occurs during catalytic transformations. In addition, the Proceedings report new data on methods of ''assembling'' molecularly organized catalytic systems and on the mechanisms of their action. The various problems such as the effect of strong metal--support interaction, migration of atoms in active sites, and design of catalytic properties of substances are also widely discussed. Similarities and differences in mechanisms of action of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are considered, using as examples CO hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis of saturated hydrocarbons, selective hydrogenation and oxidation of olefins, metathesis and polymerization of olefins, hydrosilylation and hydroformylation of olefins, etc.

Heterogeneous catalysis and homogeneous catalysis are important factors in increasing the development of green chemistry. Some of the challenges that we are responsible for are directing research efforts toward increasing the kinetics of heterogeneous catalysis to homogeneous catalysis levels, improving the recyclability of the catalysts, and developing new supports that can act as catalysts or cocatalysts. Following reaction kinetics and mechanisms on supported catalysts provides the degree of precision and accuracy already enjoyed by the homogeneous catalysis community. The editors present an easily-accessible digest for researchers and a reference aimed at offering guidance to new researchers in the field. Priced at £110.00 or US$180.00.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis plays a central role in the global energy paradigm, with practically all energy-related process relying on a catalyst at a certain point. The application of heterogeneous catalysts will be of paramount importance to achieve the transition towards low carbon and sustainable societies. This book provides an overview of the design, limitations and challenges of heterogeneous catalysts for energy applications. In an attempt to cover a broad spectrum of scenarios, the book considers traditional processes linked to fossil fuels such as reforming and hydrocracking, as well as catalysis for sustainable energy applications such as hydrogen production, photocatalysis, biomass upgrading and conversion of CO2 to clean fuels. Novel approaches in catalysts design are covered, including microchannel reactors and structured catalysts, catalytic membranes and ionic liquids. With contributions from leaders in the field, Heterogeneous Catalysis for Energy Applications will be an essential toolkit for chemists, physicists, chemical engineers and industrials working on energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated approach to the molecular theory of reaction mechanism in heterogeneous catalysis, largely based on the knowledge among the growing theoretical catalysis community over the past half century, and covering all major catalytic systems. The authors develop a general conceptual framework, including in-depth comparisons with enzyme catalysis, biomineralisation, organometallic and coordination chemistry. A chapter dedicated to molecular electrocatalysis addresses the molecular description of reactions at the liquid-solid interphase, while studies range from a quantum-chemical treatment of individual molecular states to dynamic Monte-Carlo simulations, including the full flexibility of the many-particle systems. Complexity in catalysis is explained in chapters on self-organization and self-assembly of catalysts, and other sections are devoted to evolutionary, combinatorial techniques as well as artificial chemistry.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous Catalysis: Materials and Applications focuses on heterogeneous catalysis applied to the elimination of atmospheric pollutants as an alternative solution for producing clean energy and the valorization of chemical products. The book helps users understand the properties of catalytic materials and catalysis phenomena governing electrocatalytic/catalytic reactions, and – more specifically – the study of surface and interface chemistry. By clustering knowledge in these fields, the book makes information available to both the academic and industrial communities. Further, it shows how heterogeneous catalysis applications can be used to solve environmental problems and convert energy through electrocatalytic reactions and chemical valorization. Sections cover nanomaterials for heterogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis mechanisms, SOX adsorption, greenhouse gases conversion, reforming reactions for hydrogen production, valorization of hydrogen energy, energy conversion and biomass valorization. Addresses topics of increasing interest to society such as the valorization of biomass, the use of polluting gases to produce value-added products, and the optimization of catalytic materials for water splitting, fuel cells, and other devices Discusses pollutant adsorption by industrial fume desulphurization processes Helps improve processes for obtaining chemicals using nonconventional technologies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis is a chemistry term which describes catalysis where the catalyst is in a different phase (ie. solid, liquid and gas, but also oil and water) to the reactants. Heterogeneous catalysts provide a surface for the chemical reaction to take place on. In order for the reaction to occur, one or more of the reactants must diffuse to the catalyst surface and adsorb onto it. After reaction, the products must desorb from the surface and diffuse away from the solid surface. Frequently, this transport of reactants and products from one phase to another plays a dominant role in limiting the reaction rate. Understanding these transport phenomena and surface chemistry such as dispersion is an important area of heterogeneous catalyst research. Catalyst surface area may also be considered. Mesoporous silicates, for example, have found utility as catalysts because their surface areas may be in excess of 1000 m2/g, which increases the probability that a reactant molecule in solution will come in contact with the catalyst surface and adsorb. If diffusion rates are not taken into account, the reaction rates for various reactions on surfaces depend solely on the rate constants and reactant concentrations. Asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis can be used to synthesise enantiomerically pure compounds using chiral heterogeneous catalysts.[1] The field is of great industrial and environmental importance
