Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking up the various conceptions of heroism that are conjured in the Harry Potter series, this collection examines the ways fictional heroism in the twenty-first century challenges the idealized forms of a somewhat simplistic masculinity associated with genres like the epic, romance and classic adventure story. The collection's three sections address broad issues related to genre, Harry Potter's development as the central heroic character and the question of who qualifies as a hero in the Harry Potter series. Among the topics are Harry Potter as both epic and postmodern hero, the series as a modern-day example of psychomachia, the series' indebtedness to the Gothic tradition, Harry's development in the first six film adaptations, Harry Potter and the idea of the English gentleman, Hermione Granger's explicitly female version of heroism, adult role models in Harry Potter, and the complex depictions of heroism exhibited by the series' minor characters. Together, the essays suggest that the Harry Potter novels rely on established generic, moral and popular codes to develop new and genuine ways of expressing what a globalized world has applauded as ethically exemplary models of heroism based on responsibility, courage, humility and kindness.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,1, University of Bonn (Bonner Zentrum für Lehrerbildung), language: English, abstract: J.K. Rowling started her series as a story for children but is her protagonist, to whom many refer to as hero, really a hero and can the Harry Potter series be seen as children’s literature? This question will be answered in this work with firstly looking at the characteristics of children’s literature and if Rowling used them in her novels or not with a closer look on Rowling’s plot and setting as well as her representation of love, death, and trauma. Rowling places her story in a boarding school with dangerous and unknown animals and creatures and her protagonists are wizards. Her main protagonists an eleven-year-old orphaned boy who must live with his miserable relatives until he discovers that he must fulfil a greater destiny. Furthermore, the endings of her books will be analyzed whether they are closed or open because although she knew that the series should consists of seven novels in total, she did not know how successful her novels might be and if she will get the opportunity to write more books. According to that, the endings will also be examined on whether they have happy endings or not since they picture different outlooks on the story due to the plot that is set up by Rowling.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,7, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper tries to answer the question: "what kind of literary hero is Severus Snape? Anti-hero or tragic hero?". J.K. Rowling is one of the most famous authors of our time and she gained this fame by writing the Harry Potter books. They are about the life of a young wizard that has to defeat the most powerful and dark wizard of all time – Lord Voldemort, as it has been said in a prophecy. And this wizard is Harry Potter. He is a student in Hogwarts, a school for wizardry and witchcraft where he learns to control his magical powers. One of his professors is Severus Snape, the poison master. From the first day on, he is unfriendly and unfair to Harry and his friends. Snape is one of the most ambiguous characters in the Harry Potter series, because it is hard to see through his actions that are contradictory most of the time. In the end, after Snape has died, it is revealed he had been on Harry’s side all along. In the wizarding world he his celebrated as a hero, because he risked his own life and spied for Dumbledore to help Harry.

One can think of several explanations for this lasting popularity. Maybe one reason for it lies in the use of certain archetypes and story arcs that can be found in popular tales. This thesis will examine in what way and to what extent Harry Potter can be added to the archetypal heroes the American mythologist Joseph Campbell has described in his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" in 1949, first by lining out the different stages Campbell laid out in his book and then by applying them to the Harry Potter novels. The analysis is divided according to the three stages Campbell uses (Departure - Initiation - Return).

Book excerpt: “As the first part of the title indicates, my interest in looking at intertextuality and transformation still maintains a prominent place throughout this book as well. If we believe that ‘no text is an island,’ then we will understand that the relationships between and within texts across the years become a fascinating place for academic inquiry. I included the word ‘boundaries’ into the title because we never get tired of voicing our opinions about texts which traverse relegated boundaries, such as genre or medium. Not only am I interested in discussing what these changes across boundaries mean socially, historically, and culturally, but also what they mean geographically, which accounts for the second part of my title. “I am very excited that this book will be placing even more emphasis on children’s literature in an international scene than my first book did, in the sense that I have added more scholars on an international level. I hesitate to list the nationalities of all of the contributors here because quite a few have themselves crossed international boundaries in different ways, by either studying abroad or finding permanent residency in foreign countries. Nevertheless, the writers have lived extensively in or identify as being from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United States of America, and Wales.” —Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: In his article “Heroism: Why heroes are important” Scott LaBarge states that “we need heroes first and foremost because our heroes help define the limits of our aspirations.” Heroes can be found in history since the beginning of mankind – although the term ‘hero’ was not used until the ancient Greeks (LaBarge). It can be said that we always were and still are fascinated by outstanding skills and personalities. One timeless tale in which two famous heroes can be found is the Arthurian legend, namely King Arthur himself and the wizard Merlin. The story can be referred to as timeless because “it is full of universal ideas that we still feel connected to” (Hardyment). This means that, even though King Arthur and Merlin are heroes of the past, they are significant today because we still appreciate the values they embody. Down to the present day, the legend was adapted numerous times in different forms of media or used as an inspirational source. Consequently, it also found its way into children’s literature, for instance into Joanne K. Rowling’s famous fantasy book series “Harry Potter”, which was published between 1997 and 2007 (Eldridge). In her essay “Is Dumbledore another disguise? Where to find Merlin in Harry Potter”, Florence Marsal puts forward the thesis that “the consensus of [the series] is an amalgam of popular myths, foes, and heroes, reworked into a modern fantasy tale (...)”. The aim of this seminar paper is to prove Marsal’s thesis to a certain extent, by examining the elements of the medieval legend in the “Harry Potter” series, focusing on the characters of Merlin and King Arthur as well as Dumbledore and Harry Potter. First, a closer look at the history of the Arthurian legend, together with a definition of the terms ‘legend’ and ‘myth’, will give the reader a better understanding of the topic. Subsequently, the subject of history in “Harry Potter” will be investigated from two different angles: the handling of history within the story and the reflection of ‘real historical events’, together with an explanation of J.K. Rowling’s usage of the past. The following sections will deal with the above-mentioned characters and in which way the ancient heroes can be rediscovered in the modern children’s story. Annotating, it has to be said that, as Merlin is a “’multi-faceted’ character” (Marsal), his history and characteristics cannot be discussed completely in this seminar paper.

Book excerpt: Heroic Leadership is a celebration of our greatest heroes, from legends such as Mahatma Gandhi to the legions of unsung heroes who transform our world quietly behind the scenes. The authors argue that all great heroes are also great leaders. The term ‘heroic leadership’ is coined to describe how heroism and leadership are intertwined, and how our most cherished heroes are also our most transforming leaders. This book offers a new conceptual framework for understanding heroism and heroic leadership, drawing from theories of great leadership and heroic action. Ten categories of heroism are described: Trending Heroes, Transitory Heroes, Transparent Heroes, Transitional Heroes, Tragic Heroes, Transposed Heroes, Transitional Heroes, Traditional Heroes, Transforming Heroes, and Transcendent Heroes. The authors describe the lives of 100 exceptional individuals whose accomplishments place them into one of these ten hero categories. These 100 hero profiles offer supporting evidence for a new integration of theories of leadership and theories of heroism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Duisburg-Essen (Anglophone), language: English, abstract: It has not been a surprise that over the last years the novel of a boy with a scar and magic abilities has inspired children and adults. People cannot stop reading the story of a young boy who goes to a wizard school named Hogwarts. But have they thought why readers are attracted to this book series? And how it has influenced them in different ways? These are questions, this paper tries to answer. Furthermore, the main goal will be to answer the question in what way does symbolism appear into the novel? What is the meaning of the symbols in this novel? These questions will be answered by both: analysing the context in which they appear and their possible meaning in the novel. The answer would be simple: Due to many stylistic and rhetorical devices, J. K. Rowling enlightens the world of the and gives us the possibility to discover it. However, a big part of this input comes from symbolism she uses as an author to catch attention in a better way. An entire generation has been influenced of how the author J. K. Rowling turns the world of a book into a living one. Therefore, it is no surprise that this piece of fantasy literature has become an important object of various studies. The novel itself can be investigated in several ways. This means Harry Potter as a fantasy novel is a masterpiece of literary and stylistic devices. It can also be approached as a good example of how an author could with use of symbolism write a good novel. In this term paper, the author would therefore like to limit the field of study to the meaning of the symbols we can find in Harry Potter. Furthermore, there will be a short definition to give an overview about what are core aspects in Heroic fantasy? This should help to get an impression of what is important in this genre and how it is presented. The term paper will be structured with a theoretical framework, the analysis and a conclusion to summarise all important results and with a look in the future concerning symbolism. There are a lot of traditional symbols with different origins and meanings. In this term paper the author is describing only the most common symbols like e.g. good versus evil, magic, names and spells and other important symbols which she considers as nameable. She will be working with the hypothesis that patterns can be found in the manner of symbolism in many various ways.

This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many elements in the concept of visual continuity, and they are all interrelated. In films or film series that are described as sequels, establishing a visual integrity relationship between films comes to the fore. The concept of the sequel appears in two ways. Sometimes, while the ideas are scripted, the story is divided into more than one part. Sometimes the story is planned as a single movie, and after a certain time, it can be realized as a follow-up movie/film for different reasons. In both systems of expression, it is necessary to seek harmony between all elements of visual design. Examinations and Analysis of Sequels and Serials in the Film Industry examines certain contents through the concepts of cinematography and narrative, focusing more on the practical side of cinema and partially on the theoretical side. It examines samples, sequels, serials, and trilogy universes on the axis of cinematography and narration. Covering topics such as film landscape, repeated narrative elements, and storytelling, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for film industry workers, film students and educators, sociologists, librarians, academicians, and researchers.
