Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching the Bible in an original way—comparing biblical heroes to heroes in world literature—Elliott Rabin addresses a core biblical question: What is the Bible telling us about what it means to be a hero? Focusing on the lives of six major biblical characters—Moses, Samson, David, Esther, Abraham, and Jacob—Rabin examines their resemblance to hero types found in (and perhaps drawn from) other literatures and analyzes why the Bible depicts its heroes less gloriously than do the texts of other cultures: * Moses founds the nation of Israel—and is short-tempered and weak-armed. * Samson, arrogant and unhinged, can kill a thousand enemies with his bare hands. * David establishes a centralized, unified, triumphal government—through pretense and self-deception. * Esther saves her people but marries a murderous, misogynist king. * Abraham's relationships are wracked with tension. * Jacob fathers twelve tribes—and wins his inheritance through deceit. In the end, is God the real hero? Or is God too removed from human constraints to even be called a “hero”? Ultimately, Rabin excavates how the Bible’s unique perspective on heroism can address our own deep-seated need for human-scale heroes.

But what about Ehud, Deborah, Jonathan, and some of the other lesser-known but equally colorful heroes of the Bible? Popular children's author and illustrator Sandy Silverthorne uses hilarious drawings and modern-day settings to introduce kids to some of the everyday people God has used in amazing ways. Each story includes an age-appropriate devotional that ties a life lesson to the character and helps kids apply what they learn to their own lives. These tongue-in-cheek but historically accurate retellings will help readers (8 to 12 years old) discover some of the hidden gems in the Bible. Even "reluctant readers" will become immersed in these stories and enjoy watching the way God can turn anyone into a surprising and unusual hero in His plan to reach the world.

Book excerpt: JUDGES: Book of Heroes traces the tragic story of the people of God from the glory days of Joshua to the gloomy days of Samson; from courage to compromise; from conquest to capitulation. But despite the subject matter, this book is not a gloomy book! The author shows that for all their failings, the judges were men and women of rare faith, men and women who stood for God in troubled times. And he encourages us, too, to live for God where He has placed us; to serve Him faithfully in the work to which He has called us. "We may not have the spiritual gifts of a Samson or a Deborah. We may not have the courage of an Othniel or a Jephthah. Perhaps we're just ordinary, like Gideon, or maybe we feel like one of the minor judges, like Abdon or Ibzan or Tola, whose names nobody can remember. Nevertheless, God delights to use ordinary people, and He delights even more to use really useless people! God will use those who have faith in Him, those whose hearts are loyal to Him. The judges of Israel, imperfect as they were, stand out for God like shining beacons in a dark night, because at the end of the day, they trusted God, and were available to Him."

Download or read book Bible Stories about the Heroes of the Faith written by James Thomas Lee, Jr. and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many but not all of the heroes of the Faith are named in the book of Hebrews, chapter eleven. Sixteen saints were specifically named in the first thirty-two verses of that chapter. But many others were implied indirectly in the last eight verses of that chapter. Hebrews 11:32-40 says, "And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell...of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect." Therefore, chapter one of this text will identify how those people had become heroes of the Faith and how anyone can be a hero of the Faith. After that two stories will be shared about Abel. One story will be shared about Enoch. Six stories will be shared about Noah. Ten stories will be shared about Abraham. One story each will be shared about Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob. Five stories will be shared about Moses. One story each will be shared about Joshua and Rahab. Two stories will be shared about Gideon. One story will be shared about Barak. Two stories will be shared about Samson. One story each will be shared about Jephthah and Samuel. Four stories will be shared about David. One story will be shared about Solomon. Three stories will be shared about Elijah. One story each will be shared about Elisha and the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace. Two stories will be shared about Daniel. One story will be shared about Jonah. After that, a brief word of those saints indirectly referenced by the last eight verses of the chapter will be given. In all, this text will share fifty stories about the heroes of the Faith. Then the final chapter of this text will share some significant closing thoughts. One in particular is that a lot of theological truth can be seen through the lives of many of the heroes of the Faith. The purpose for a text like this one is NOT just to tell a few Bible stories. Instead it is to show how ANYONE can become a hero of the Faith. Everything begins by seeking the Lord with all of one's heart, by committing oneself to Him, by trusting in Him, and then by entering into a personal relationship with Him. But it does not end there. Therefore, at the end of each story will be a "Life Application" section that shows how a SAVED person can grow in the Lord and actually become a hero of the Faith. The Lord is longsuffering because He does not want anyone to leave this existence NOT SAVED. But after that, He is looking for some saints that want to be His heroes in this life. One should note that his book is different than most of my other books. It is not argumentative. It only contains a very few outside references. It also does not contain any Hebrew or Greek words although a few brief references to the original Hebrew and Greek languages are mentioned.
