But it may be said that the lives of great men cannot be told too often, and to write about the military heroes of America without giving a leading place to the noblest of them all would be like giving the drama of Hamlet with the character of Hamlet left out. George Washington was what is called well-born. He belonged to the colonial aristocracy of the Old Dominion. His ancestors came from noble English families, the first Americans among them, Lawrence and John Washington, coming to Virginia in the time of Cromwell. John had a son named Augustine, and on the 22d of February, 1732, Augustine's first child was born. His parents named him George Washington, little dreaming how famous that name was afterwards to become. Little George grew up to be a fine, hearty, handsome boy, strong and sound in body and noble in character. His father died when he was twelve years of age, but his mother, one of the wisest and most excellent of women, was left with a good estate. She dwelt in an old manor-house on the Rappahannock River opposite the town of Fredericksburg, and there she devoted herself to bringing up her six fatherless children to be good men and women. George, as the years went on, became a tall, vigorous, well-proportioned youth. He got what little education the poor Virginia schools of that time could give, was good in mathematics and learned surveying, intending to become a civil engineer, a profession which promised very well in that pioneer period. A seaside village rather, its people mainly haymakers, for it lay amid grassy meadows beside its bay. But there were woodsmen among its population who knew how to swing an axe and bring down the giants Of the Maine forests; and it had, no doubt, its share Of men Of the sea, for the ports of New England in those days were Often busy scenes of ocean ventures. The people of Machias did not love King George. All the tall, straight trees in their woods were reserved to make masts for British ships, and no woodsman dared set axe to one Of their giant pines for fear of seizure by the agents Of the king. It was not to their liking, then, when, on a May morning in 1775, a small fleet sailed into their quiet harbor, consisting Of the Margaretta, a British armed schooner, and two lops sent to get lumber for the fortifications at Boston. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and Her Army American Government supplies the usual food and clothing to the army, and has done it, upon the whole, regularly and copiously. But the agents of the American people are every where present with ample stores of everything which men require, to place it beyond all doubt that the American soldier shall suffer no discomfort which it is possible to avert. There is a perfect fitness in this arrangement. For of this war it may be said, without qualification or reserve, that it is the war or the people. N 0 Government made it. It was from the outset the fixed determination of the Northern people that the nation should not submit to dismemberment. This is their own war, fought by their own sons and brothers, for the accomplishment of purposes which are dearer to them than life. It is fitting that they should assume the care of an army which is so emphatically their own. We do not understand aright the spirit in which the American people are fighting out this mighty quarrel till we know what care they bestow upon their soldiers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Volunteers' Roll of Honor: A Collection of the Noble and Praiseworthy Deeds Performed in the Cause of the Union by the Heroes of the Army and Navy of the United States There is but one theme which will satisfy this desire, and that is the glorious and noble deeds performed in their country's behalf, both on land and sea, by our gallant, our invincible volunteers. Thus far these deeds have been allowed to sink into forgetfulness for the lack of some one to collect (and preserve them. To have them placed upon a lasting record would be not only deeply gratifying to the volunteers themselves, but equally so to those near and dear ones at home who watch so eagerly the contests of our brave Army and Navy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys of 1812 and Other Naval Heroes As we look back upon it now, it is wonderful to think what a daring thing it was for this small and Scattered people, living in their little towns along the seacoast from Maine to Georgia, or on farms and plantations in the country, without an army or navy, without generals, and above all without money, - for money is needed to carry on war more than almost anything else, - to have thus made up their minds to stand up bravely and manfully against such a power as Great Britain (one of the greatest in the world). With all her troops and ships and immense revenues. That we should have come out successfully from a contest SO unequal seems little short of marvellous; and we cannot but think that it was the hand Of an overruling Destiny that enabled us to succeed, by giving us a general as skilful and prudent as Washington, statesmen as Wise as Franklin and Jefferson and Adams, an enemy as indolent as Sir William Howe, and allies as powerful as our good friends the French. Brigadier General Scott, said General Brown in his Official report, is entitled to the highest praise our country can bestow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales: From American Life To sit at your fireside with such a goodly company of brave hearts is a privilege that probably never be fore has come to you. Directly before you, are men who imperiled their lives for their country. Here are women who withstood the bitterest agonies for the sake of their beloved ones. Here is a child who fled into the arms of death to save those who were in danger. There is the soldier who led an army to victory. Here is a captain who brought a thousand lives safely to port. You have, undoubtedly, often wished that you might see the conquering hero return from war, or clasp the hands of the world's bravest men. Here they are with you: Dewey, the hero of Manila; Custer, the hero of the Indian massacres; Houston, the frontiersman; Nathan Hale, the patriot. Some of them have been very near to you: Binns, the hero of the Republic dis aster, the first man to save his ship through the modern science of wireless telegraphy; Lieutenant Selfridge, who gave his life to the solution of aerial navigation while in the service of his country; heroes of the long ago; heroes of yesterday; heroes of to-day - in the company of the heroes of to-morrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Tales of the American Soldier and Sailor: As Told by the Heroes Themselves and Their Comrades; The Unwritten History of American Chivalry This government has proved itself invincible in the recent war, and out of it has come a nation which will remain indivisible forever more. N o worthier contributions have been made than by the people of these Southern States. When at last the opportunity came they were eager to meet it and with promptness responded to the call of the country. Intrusted with the able leadership of men near to them, who had marched with their fathers under another ag, now fighting under the old ag again, they have gloriously helped to defend its spot less folds and added new lustre to its shining stars. That ag has been planted in two hemispheres, and there it remains, the symbol of liberty and law, of peace and progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Register of the United States, Vol. 2 From the disadvantages under which the army has laboured, the little navy of America has been entirely free. The previ' ous embarrassments of commerce rendered it easy for our naval officers to supply themselves with a sufficient number of seamen, and with men too who had all their lives been engaged in simi lar pursuits, and under the most rigorous discipline; for we apprehend that but little difference exists as to discipline and general habits between a merchantman and a ship of war. With these circumstances in view, then, while we rejoice over the brilliant exploits of our naval heroes, let us not doubt but that the American army, when it has overcome the difficulties which have arisen from the long peace with which the United States has been blessed, and from the very nature of its free political institutions, will show what can be achieved by freemen by land_as well as by sea.
