Book excerpt: The official companion book, edited by director Terry George, including essays on the history of the genocide, the complete screenplay written by Keir Pearson & Terry George, and more than 70 photographs. A Story That Had to Be Told: In 1994, as his country descended into madness, Paul Rusesabagina, the hotel manager of a Belgian-owned luxury hotel in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, used cunning and courage to save 1,268 people from certain death while the rest of the world closed its eyes. His real-life story inspired the Oscar® -nominated writer of In the Name of the Father, Terry George, to make the extraordinary film, Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Joaquin Phoenix, and Nick Nolte, which has received accolades from critics and moviegoers alike, winning numerous awards. Now, in the only official companion book, comes the fascinating filmmaking story, with first-person pieces by Terry George and co-screenwriter Keir Pearson about their three-year struggle to gain support and financing, as well as a brief history of Rwanda with details on the actual events portrayed in the movie. Illustrated with more than 70 historical and contemporary photos and movie stills, the book also includes journalist Nicola Graydon's report on joining Paul Rusesabagina when he first returned to Rwanda on the tenth anniversary of the genocide; writer Anne Thompson's personal journal of her visit to the set in Africa during production in February 2004; and a compelling transcript of the PBS Frontline documentary revealing the afterthoughts of officials who chose not to listen to the cries for help. In addition there is a timeline of the crisis, a further reading and viewing list, and the complete screenplay.

Book Synopsis A Reluctant Hero's Footsteps by : John R. Scales
Download or read book A Reluctant Hero's Footsteps written by John R. Scales and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, by chance I discovered the after-action reports of the 329th Infantry Regiment, my father’s World War II unit, on the Internet. An idea was born: use these to reconstruct my father’s path in Europe. I would take my three children, Richard, Mary, and Stephen, on a trip to retrace those footsteps. This book is about our travels, but it is much more. It documents the life of a man and his family, the history of a unit, and how, through research and luck, we were able piece together the story. As far as possible, I tell the tale of my father’s life with pictures and artifacts from that life. In parallel, I relate the history of the unit he joined in combat, inserting pictures where I can. In fitting all the records together with the trip itself, I discovered my father in new ways and built a memory for my children. In an appendix, I give you a guide as to how you can do this for your veterans as well.

Book excerpt: "You see I must go, don't you, Kitty?" Kip asked. Everything in her cried out, No, I don't understand. What about her dreams, her desires, the life they had planned together? Then she remembered the epitaph on the head-stone in the old hillside cemetery, the one that had made such a lasting impression on her: "What I gave, I have; what I spent, I saved, What I kept, I lost." It had been true a hundred years ago, and it was just as true now. If she did not let Kip go freely, he would go anyway, and she would lose him. You could not keep what did not want to be kept. Eventually Kip would be lost to her unless--"Of course, Kip, I understand." When Kitty Cameron, in love with the dashing Kip Montrose, is forced to accept the dangerous career he has chosen for himself, she faces a difficult challenge. In order to follow her heart, she makes a decision that will irrevocably change her own life forever. Determinedly overcoming parental objections as well as her own sensitive nature, Kitty sets out to accomplish her goal. Drawing on inner resources of faith, Kitty emerges from her sheltered girlhood as a woman of enormous bravery, spiritual strength, compassion, and courage. Having survived physical danger, heartbreak, and loss, Kitty discovers that sometimes the reality of love is more fulfilling than its illusion.

Download or read book THIS DAY THAT YEAR written by K V Laxminarayan aka LAX and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Day That Year as a title came from a TV program of the 90s called “This Week That Year”, that I used to watch on TV. I could relate to it very well as I remembered the release dates of most of the movies of the late 60s and early 70s and when the host spoke about it, I went down my memory lane and loved the experience. Once I became part of Facebook in 2009, I found a great forum to share my experiences of movie releases in Bombay then and now Mumbai. I found a lot of like-minded people who could relate to my post and shared their experiences and thoughts as comments. Quite a few of them encouraged me to share it with a larger audience and hence suggested publishing it. I never thought of doing it but when people kept telling me regularly to do it, I decided to give it a try, and here comes my experiences and thoughts of the movies released in the late 60s and early 70s. Hope you like what you read, though many of the statements would look repetitive. But do accept the experiences of a teenager who turns into a man in 1973.

Download or read book The Heroes written by Thomas Trese and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do a restauranteur from Seattle, an oil field foreman from west Texas, and a burned-out, ex-Chicago cop have in common? Not much to start with, but these and seven other everyday Americans meet in Nashville. They’ve all answered calls to action trusting that inner voice by combatting evil in their hometowns, seamlessly coordinating with law enforcement. All the feats seemed improbable but for the grace of God and the prompting of the spirit. Their heroic actions catch the attention of a Christian TV network that brings them to Nashville for the Faith Hero Awards. Stephanie, the restauranteur; Cody, the oil field roughneck; and Danny, the ex-Chicago cop, lead the heroes in three adventures. They combat a phony TV faith healer in Nashville, human and drug traffickers in Texas, and racial hate groups in Chicago while dealing with their own issues such as control, substance abuse, and angry outbursts. Mentors from their pasts help them deal with their personal demons. The Heroes, a work of religious fiction, offers stories of the real faith journeys of familiar people—a janitor, a social worker, an Uber driver, a diner waitress, and a pizza deliverer. It shares a message of faith built through adversity, teambuilding on the fly, and reveals how God equips the chosen rather than choosing the equipped.
