Nicholson and Jeff Margrave), forms an expedition party to explore an area of uncharted land where it is rumored lives a society consisting entirely of women. The three friends do not entirely believe the rumors because they are unable to think of a way how human reproduction could occur without males. The men speculate about what a society of women would be like, each guessing differently based on the stereotype of women which he holds most dear: Jeff regarding women as things to be served and protected; Terry viewing them as things to be conquered and won. When the explorers reach their destination, they proceed with caution, hiding the biplane they arrive in, and trying to keep themselves hidden in the forests that border the land. They are quickly found by three young women who they realize are observing them from the treetops. After attempting to catch the girls with trickery, the men end up chasing the young women towards a town or village. The women outrun them easily and disappear among the houses, which, Van notes are exceptionally well made and attractive. After meeting the first inhabitants of this new land (which Van names Herland) the men proceed more cautiously, noting that the girls they met were strong, agile, and completely unafraid. Their caution is warranted because as the men enter the town where the girls disappeared, they become surrounded by a large group of women who march them towards an official looking building. . . The three main characters who feature throughout the novel include Terry Nicholson, a misogynist explorer; Jeff Margrave, a doctor who idolizes women and puts them on a pedestal, and Vandyck Jennings, a sociologist whose views on women may not be more accurate than his counterparts, but at the very least are firmly rooted in scientific study. The three men represent clearly different male perspectives on women. While Jeff idealizes women as feminine and proper, Terry is more concerned with their physical appearance than their comportment. Vandyck's point of view is vastly different still, as he perceives women as objects of study.After introducing the three men, the narrative follows the explorers as they endeavor to find the oft-rumored female utopia, a land that is said to be entirely inhabited by women. It is also said that no man has ever returned from this place. With their curiosity piqued, the three men hire a native guide to lead them to this mythical place, which Terry calls "Herland."Upon arriving, the explorers are greeted by young Ellador, Celis, and Alima. When the men attempt to catch them, they are surprised to discover that the women's quick, easy strides surpass their own. After their first encounter with the native women of this place, the men describe them as living in trees, nervous and averse to capture. Nevertheless, the men's curiosity about the creatures has been piqued, and they venture into the center of town to see what other evidence they can uncover.Not long after their arrival, the elders of the settlement become aware of their presence. The elders welcome them into the community but are also tentative about the presence of men within their female utopia. They treat the men as their prisoners, but in a very comfortable way, and let them know which areas of the utopia are available to them and which are off-limits. The men are skeptical that this society is run entirely by women, convinced that surely a place of such beauty and efficiency must be the result of the male mind.While the men are imprisoned, they are assigned tutors that teach them the national language, culture, and history. The prisoners are also instructed about the behavior expected of them as guests of Herland. They learn that Herland was once a slaveholding civilization inhabited by both men and women. Constant warfare with the native populations in the region resulted in the death of almost all the men. When the few remaining slaveholders and all the older women were killed by male slaves who intended to control the fortressed country and its young female inhabitants, the women were forced to defend themselves, vanquishing their conquerors. After that, no man has existed in Herland for two thousand years.However, Jeff, Terry, and Vandyck are not satisfied with the information provided to them by their hospitable captors, and so they venture out on their own to do more investigating. They soon learn that they are among an ancient culture of women who have built a life for themselves that does not include men. The women have lived successfully for centuries without male influence; this discovery acts as an awakening for Jeff, Terry, and Vandyck.To their amazement, the women have built infrastructure and their own governmental system. They have given birth to and raised children as a community and have many accomplishments in both the arts and sciences. The women possess the miraculous ability to self-fertilize, enabling them to have female children, which becomes the central religion of their society.Vandyck and Jeff apply themselves, eager to learn as much as they can about this fascinating place. With their newly discovered knowledge, they adapt to their surroundings.
