Book excerpt: I like the idea of a sentimental-historical approach to articles about Grinnell and other topics. Maybe there is no past or no future, only the present. I have a good memory, which is my main research tool. Share ideas and establish contact with old friends and others. Somehow, I believe the blogs on aging are of some value to others. Feedback confirms that. It gives me something worthwhile to do. Too much leisure can be the booby prize of retirement, as can be too much activity. This is a collection of essays which I have written and arranged in a reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent and moving back in time with the others. The main topic of the articles is Grinnell, Iowa, my hometown, but there are also other subjects discussed. They are a historic, nostalgic treatment of many facets of life there in the 1940s and 1950s including Grinnell College and Grinnell High School sporting events, customs in the neighborhoods back then, and the inevitable topic of aging and life as a septuagenarian. The articles on aging are written with my GHS class of 1957 classmates in mind.

This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When former sportscaster Tony Powers went into surgery for a minor knee repair, he had no idea he would make a side trip to eternity. Once the pretty nurse placed the anesthesia mask over his face and told him to take a few deep breaths, Tony was blasted into the heavens like an astronaut aboard a rocket at Cape Canaveral. He couldn't believe how beautiful it was. He saw a cacophony of rainbow colors and a brilliant dazzling white cloud in the distance. He noticed millions of people of all ages, colors, and creeds as they walked toward the cloud on their way to judgment day. It wasn't long before Tony recognized famous actors, actresses, world leaders, historical figures, coaches, and athletes on their way to judgment. Was all this just an anesthesia-induced dream or a figment of his imagination? Had he been carried into the heavens suspended between life and death? Had Tony been thrust into the third dimension known as the Twilight Zone? Had Tony Powers crossed into eternity?

Samuel Walker and Randy Roberts identify the 1973–74 season as pivotal in the making of this now legendary postseason tournament. In an era when only one team per conference could compete, the dramatic defeat of coach John Wooden's UCLA Bruins by the North Carolina State Wolfpack ended a decade of the Bruins' dominance, fueled unprecedented national attention, and prompted the NCAA to expand the tournament field to a wider range of teams.
