This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government's programme to replace 46 local fire and rescue service control rooms with nine purpose-built regional control centres has been inadequately planned, poorly executed, and badly managed. Given the investment of public funds already committed, and the benefits that will accrue, the MPs conclude that the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) should press ahead with the FireControl project so long as Ministers can agree urgently a viable project plan that will see the project go live by a target date of mid-2011 and in which the main stakeholders can have confidence. The excessive cost of abandoning the project - an extra £8 million more than it will cost to complete - indicates the Department should continue with the project so long as it also: examines alternatives and provides assurances that FiReControl represents the best viable option for the future of Fire and Rescue Services; resolves its contractual dispute with EADS and implements a viable project plan; addresses the shortcomings in its management of the project; consults fully with FRS staff and professionals to define end-user requirements; provides assurances that the safety and security of the Olympic Games will not be compromised by the roll-out of new Regional Control Centres. DCLG should urgently to draw up and consult on contingency plans for any further failures in the FiReControl programme to ensure ongoing safe and effective fire and rescue services cover across the whole country.

Download or read book Born Into Fire written by Mick Haines and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an autobiography of my life and covers it all from day one, with my unexpected and untimely arrival, to my finish now and all that went on between in my days before school, my days at school, my time in the British Army and the time in the Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service. I have put into the book things that I think people will find amusing, and also interesting and informative, and lastly of all the things that I think could make people cry. The book is not entirely about things that happed to me during my time while in the Fire Service. I have also taken part in other events that have gone on outside the working environment and having kept a diary during these events which has enabled me to write an accurate and hopefully amusing account of these times. Obviously I have not tried to be amusing or funny when someone has been injured or killed as I think this would not be right or proper. I hope you enjoy reading my book as much as I did when writing it.

Book Synopsis Growing Remembrance by : David Childs
Download or read book Growing Remembrance written by David Childs and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2008-09-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the inspiration for, establishment and evolution of the National Memorial Arboretum is a fascinating one. Sited at Alrewas, Staffordshire, the Arboretum has become the Nations all year round focus for remembering and paying tribute to all who have served their country in both peace and war not only in the armed forces and merchant navy but in the emergency services as well.Planting began in 1997 and was supported by hundreds of organizations both serving and retired. Among the early memorials was a life-size wooded polar bear, for 49th Division, a grove of Irish trees for the Royal Irish Regiment, an Avenue of Chestnuts for the Police and a Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness to mark the coming of the Millennium. Britains war-widows had a rose-garden planted for them while the Far East Prisoners of War managed to fund a small museum to stand alongside a length of railway track brought back from the notorious Burma Railway. In October 2007 H.M. the Queen confirmed the importance of the site when she opened the Armed Forces Memorial to commemorate all service personnel lost on active service since the end of the Second World War; this is especially poignant given the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The importance of the National Memorial Arboretum is well demonstrated by the growing number of stands and the steady increase in visitor numbers.
Book Synopsis Maximum Performance by : Nick Forster
Download or read book Maximum Performance written by Nick Forster and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a big book in more ways than one. . . a detailed and illuminating exploration of leadership qualities, attributes, skills and competencies. . . the mixture of theory, reflective questions, stories, tools and practical exercises demand a level of thoughtful engagement and self-reflection rarely required by books on leadership. . . the Australian content is refreshing, as is the lack of evangelistic promises of immediate transformation. . . this book is firmly grounded in supporting the learning and skill development needed for maximum performance. (Boss magazine, August p.55). The Australian Financial Review AFR Boss If we were giving a graduate-level class in leadership and people management skills (I m a UCLA Business and Management Program instructor) I would choose this book as the text. If a client asked for a great book to enhance his/her leadership skills, (we consult in organization, compensation and performance management) this would be one of first books I would suggest. It s that good! The book offers a comprehensive guide for developing leadership and people management skills. It s a powerful, broad-spectrum leadership toolkit with a wealth of information about skills and practices, and hundreds of suggestions and opinions from business and political leaders, consultants, and academics. This book is an outstanding resource for leaders and aspiring leaders. It is filled with an abundance of insights: the distinction it makes between a leader and a manager is one of the best, if not the best, we ve read. Just a few of the subjects covered are: the leadership-as-servant philosophy; leaders as coaches and mentors; communication; motivation; leading and managing teams; women as leaders; managing power, politics and conflict; leading organizational and cultural change; creating an innovative organization; leadership and people management in high-tech, networked; and virtual organizations. Throughout the book are bullet-point lists, exercises, and to-the-point conclusions. It is clearly written and superbly organized. An excellent bibliography and subject index top off this outstanding work. We highly recommend this book. Yvette Borcia and Gerry Stern, Stern s Management Review Maximum Performance is a comprehensive business tome. Although it is designed for students, busy executives who use the chapter summaries or chapter sections to focus on topics that interest them will find the book useful. Organizations with large collections on management or leadership will want to buy it. Business researchers with limited library space or who are looking for a good summary of current management topics may also find the book of value. . . The strength of Maximum Performance is its breadth. Forster touches on everything from whether leaders are born or made to Machiavellian strategies for dealing with toxic work environments. Anyone interested in ideas on leadership will likely find several sections of interest. Those sections that are particularly strong include the discussions on the different roles and organizational context of leadership, key issues in motivating employees, the team development process, and best practices in leading organizational change. Scott R. Jenkins, Business Information Alert Nick Forster s large text is for MBA students. He writes in a clean, clear style and frankly admits that leadership and people-management skills cannot adequately be learned from books. He knows however that good books can help, and also that clichés of management can be inspirational and will be used widely though they call for close analysis of substance or context. He is in this a modern-day Samuel Smiles, equipped with a variety of diagnostic tools. The Australian In my experience a major shortcoming of most how to books on leadership and management is that they purport to offer Silver Bullets magical solutions that, once revealed, will enrich and transform the reader and his or her organisation. Regrettably
Book Synopsis Masculinities, Gender Equality and Crisis Management by : Mathias Ericson
Download or read book Masculinities, Gender Equality and Crisis Management written by Mathias Ericson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching mission of the rescue services comprises three main areas of responsibility: protection against disasters and accidents; crisis management; and civil defence. This mission covers a long chain of obligations in trying to improve societal prevention capabilities and manage threats, risks, accidents, and disasters concerning generic as well as individual safety. It follows a reactive social chain of threat-risk-crisis-crisis management-care-rehabilitation. The authors in this book show that the interesting occupational characteristics of these societal duties are their connection to gender and crisis management in a wider sense. Gendered practices, processes, identities, and symbols are analytical lenses that provide a particular understanding and explanatory base that has received far too little attention in the academic literature. This book identifies four major themes in relation to a gendered understanding of the rescue services, and more generally emergency work: Masculine heroism Intersectional understandings of sexuality, class, and race Gender and technology Gender equality and mainstreaming processes This book shows how the rescue services constitute a productive ground for contemporary gender studies, including feminist theory, masculinity and sexuality studies. Its critical perspective provides new directions for emergency work and crisis management in a broader sense, and in particular for scholars and practitioners in these areas.
Book Synopsis Men, Masculinities and Disaster by : Elaine Enarson
Download or read book Men, Masculinities and Disaster written by Elaine Enarson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the examination of gender as a driving force in disasters, too little attention has been paid to how women’s or men’s disaster experiences relate to the wider context of gender inequality, or how gender-just practice can help prevent disasters or address climate change at a structural level. With a foreword from Kenneth Hewitt, an afterword from Raewyn Connell and contributions from renowned international experts, this book helps address the gap. It explores disasters in diverse environmental, hazard, political and cultural contexts through original research and theoretical reflection, building on the under-utilized orientation of critical men’s studies. This body of thought, not previously applied in disaster contexts, explores how men gain, maintain and use power to assert control over women. Contributing authors examine the gender terrain of disasters 'through men's eyes,' considering how diverse forms of masculinities shape men’s efforts to respond to and recover from disasters and other climate challenges. The book highlights both the high costs paid by many men in disasters and the consequences of dominant masculinity practices for women and marginalized men. It concludes by examining how disaster risk can be reduced through men's diverse efforts to challenge hierarchies around gender, sexuality, disability, age and culture.
