Book excerpt: When Lorelei Levin – after grasshoppering among 3 universities and studying courses from fine art to film-making to criminalistics – finally graduates, she learns that her parents have sold the family home in Houston and gone on a world cruise. An uncle is delighted to take Lorelei in, but he lives in sleepy, small-town nowheresville. Determined to make the best of it, she applies for a job with the local bank and with all six of the downtown merchants, to no avail. When she spies an empty corner building, Lorelei’s ever-active mind envisions it as a perfect gallery to show-place her large metal sculptures. A window poster enlightens her that the lawyers who own the building will be singing that night in another small town nearby. With her uncle visiting in Dallas, Lorelei decides that a trio of singing, guitar-playing lawyers is a treat not to miss. With luck, they’ll be delighted to have an artist take over their empty building. She goes, she listens, she enjoys the show, and she recognizes a fellow student from her classes at Sam Houston State – he’s wearing a deputy sheriff badge. During intermission, she finds the lawyers are not entirely against her gallery idea. But minutes later, everything takes a spin. The singers are loading up to leave when gunshots ring out from the parking area – and Lorelei soon becomes caught up in a murder investigation. Small-town Texas, where everybody knows everybody – and one of those somebodies is a stone killer.

She got pregnant and was turned away by the babys father and kicked out of her home at the age of eighteen with no place to go and no money. This was only the beginning of the most horrible things that would happen to this young girl over the next six months until she found Mrs. Topkis, who took Jenny in and helped her with her new baby boy, whom she called Rome. Mrs. Topkis fell asleep while watching him in the park one day, and he was kidnapped. This little five-year-old boy was put through holy hell until he was placed in a county home for abandoned children. His new mama was Sonny, and he was well looked after at the home. He excelled in football and went to college on a scholarship and became very famous. His girlfriend was killed in an auto accident, which ended his football career. He took a job in Delaware and met this beautiful young girl who wanted to take him home to meet her mother. That meeting was a nightmare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lose yourself: Swoon has wicked fun answering that age-old query: What do women want?"—Chicago Tribune Contrary to popular myth and dogma, the men who consistently beguile women belie the familiar stereotypes: satanic rake, alpha stud, slick player, Mr. Nice, or big-money mogul. As Betsy Prioleau, author of Seductress, points out in this surprising, insightful study, legendary ladies’ men are a different, complex species altogether, often without looks or money. They fit no known template and possess a cache of powerful erotic secrets. With wit and erudition, Prioleau cuts through the cultural lore and reveals who these master lovers really are and the arts they practice to enswoon women. What she discovers is revolutionary. Using evidence from science, popular culture, fiction, anthropology, and history, and from interviews with colorful real-world ladykillers, Prioleau finds that great seducers share a constellation of unusual traits. While these men run the gamut, they radiate joie de vivre, intensity, and sex appeal; above all, they adore women. They listen, praise, amuse, and delight, and they know their way around the bedroom. And they’ve finessed the hardest part: locking in and revving desire. Women never tire of these fascinators and often, like Casanova’s conquests, remain besotted for life. Finally, Prioleau takes stock of the contemporary culture and asks: where are the Casanovas of today? After a critique of the twenty-first-century sexual malaise—the gulf between the sexes and women’s record discontent—she compellingly argues that society needs ladies’ men more than ever. Groundbreaking and provocative, Swoon is underpinned with sharp analysis, brilliant research, and served up with seductive verve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years leading up to the World Wars, Germany and Austria saw an unprecedented increase in the study and depiction of the criminal. Science, journalism and crime fiction were obsessed with delinquents while ignoring the social causes of crime. As criminologists measured criminals' heads and debated biological predestination, court reporters and crime writers wrote side-splitting or heart-rending stories featuring one of the most popular characters ever created--the hilarious or piteous crook. The author examines the figure of the crook and notions of "Jewish" criminality in a range of antisemitic writing, from Nazi propaganda to court reporting to forgotten classics of crime fiction.

Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
