I tend to lean more toward the traditional Native American way of healing since that is in my blood. Find teachers to teach you and learn as much as you can from each. My hope is that whoever purchases this book will learn that all weeds are not weeds and that some medicine can come from your own back yard. One instructor that I had on herbal medicine says that she believes that for whatever ailment that you have at the time that you will find the cure in your backyard and I have found that plants will change location from year to year. This book covers 105 medicinal plants with color photographs; with a space on the back of each page for notes. I have provided information on weights & measures, dosages, gathering and drying of herbs, type of preparations, herbal properties, plant terms, a list of symptoms and what herb to use for them, plant usage, location, when to harvest, parts to harvest, when to gather, and when it blooms by month.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the results from over a year of ethnobotanical research in a rural and an urban community in Jamaica, where we interviewed more than 100 people who use medicinal plants for healthcare. The goal of this research was to better understand patterns of medicinal plant knowledge, and to find out which plants are used in consensus by local people for a variety of illnesses. For this book, we selected 25 popular medicinal plant species mentioned during fieldwork. Through individual interviews, we were able to rank plants according to their frequency of mention, and categorized the medicinal uses for each species as “major” (mentioned by more than 20% of people in a community) or “minor” (mentioned by more than 5%, but less than 20% of people). Botanical identification of plant specimens collected in the wild allowed for cross-linking of common and scientific plant names. To supplement field research, we undertook a comprehensive search and review of the ethnobotanical and biomedical literature. Our book summarizes all this information in detail under specific sub-headings.

These metabolites have been used as medicine in crude extract form or with some other formulations. They have been also used to isolate the bioactive compounds in modern medicine as well as in herbal medicine systems. Thus, phytochemicals present in the plant and their parts play an important role in nanomaterials synthesis, mainly due to the presence of a significant number of secondary metabolites, for instance, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, tannins, etc. Further, essential and aromatic oils have been also explored for nanomaterials synthesis, and they are also equally useful in terms of their various biological applications. These organic ingredients come from a wide range of plant components, such as leaves, stems, roots, shoots, flowers, bark, and seeds. Globally, the presence of different plants has shown a capability to produce huge and diverse groups of secondary metabolites.
