Book excerpt: The surprising roots of the self-defense movement and the history of women’s empowerment. At the turn of the twentieth century, women famously organized to demand greater social and political freedoms like gaining the right to vote. However, few realize that the Progressive Era also witnessed the birth of the women’s self-defense movement. It is nearly impossible in today’s day and age to imagine a world without the concept of women’s self defense. Some women were inspired to take up boxing and jiu-jitsu for very personal reasons that ranged from protecting themselves from attacks by strangers on the street to rejecting gendered notions about feminine weakness and empowering themselves as their own protectors. Women’s training in self defense was both a reflection of and a response to the broader cultural issues of the time, including the women’s rights movement and the campaign for the vote. Perhaps more importantly, the discussion surrounding women’s self-defense revealed powerful myths about the source of violence against women and opened up conversations about the less visible violence that many women faced in their own homes. Through self-defense training, women debunked patriarchal myths about inherent feminine weakness, creating a new image of women as powerful and self-reliant. Whether or not women consciously pursued self-defense for these reasons, their actions embodied feminist politics. Although their individual motivations may have varied, their collective action echoed through the twentieth century, demanding emancipation from the constrictions that prevented women from exercising their full rights as citizens and human beings. This book is a fascinating and comprehensive introduction to one of the most important women’s issues of all time. This book will provoke good debate and offer distinct responses and solutions.

Book excerpt: This collection of new essays seeks to define the unique qualities of female heroism in literary fantasy from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in the 1950s through the present. Building upon traditional definitions of the hero in myth and folklore as the root genres of modern fantasy, the essays provide a multi-faceted view of an important fantasy character type who begins to demonstrate a significant presence only in the latter 20th century. The essays contribute to the empowerment and development of the female hero as an archetype in her own right.

Book excerpt: In a world filled with comparison, confined creativity, limited flexibility, and sustained dissatisfaction, young adults are suffering from a lack of pure passion and zest for life now more than ever. Social media makes things so easy to constantly feel your life is not as good as the person on your Snapchat feed or Instagram scroll, and today’s society puts so much emphasis on being the “perfect” person that adolescents are setting themselves up for an impossible standard to reach. The youth of our generation needs to be reminded that they have the power within themselves to set their own standards and go after their innermost blissful desires to create more thrill and purpose in their lives than they could ever deem possible. Magic in the lives of young adults needs to be reinstalled, dreams need to be reintroduced, and seeds of passion for life needs to be replanted. Be Your Own Hero cultivates a mind-set that the door to success always swings inward, not outward. In order to achieve your external goals, you must work on your inner self. This book aims to help young adults realize that their external empire only goes as far as their internal empire. By building a sense of self heroism and an ability to save themselves versus relying on external factors to do their saving for them, young adults can not only dream bigger but also love and serve bigger—leading them to a life they never thought possible.

Book excerpt: She faced years of abuse after arriving in Canada as a teenage bride in a hastily arranged marriage, but nothing could stop Samra Zafar from pursuing her dreams At 15, Samra Zafar had big dreams for herself. She was going to go to university, and forge her own path. Then with almost no warning, those dreams were pulled away from her when she was suddenly married to a stranger at 17 and had to leave behind her family in Pakistan to move to Canada. Her new husband and his family promised that the marriage and the move would be a fulfillment of her dream, not a betrayal of it. But as the walls of their home slowly became a prison, Samra realized the promises were empty ones. In the years that followed she suffered her husband’s emotional and physical abuse that left her feeling isolated, humiliated and assaulted. Desperate to get out, and refusing to give up, she hatched an escape plan for herself and her two daughters. Somehow she found the strength to not only build a new future, but to walk away from her past, ignoring the pleas of her family and risking cultural isolation by divorcing her husband. But that end was only the beginning for Samra. Through her academic and career achievements, she has gone on to become a mentor and public speaker, connecting with people around the world from isolated women in situations similar to her own, to young schoolgirls in Kenya who never allowed themselves to dream to men making the decisions to save for their daughters’ educations instead of their dowries. A Good Wife tell her harrowing and inspiring story, following her from a young girl with big dreams, through finding strength in the face of oppression and then finally battling through to empowerment.

Book excerpt: In My Hero, some of the brightest lights from around the globe share -- in their own words -- stories about the people who have been the greatest source of strength and inspiration to them. With essays by military heroes, political leaders, and Nobel Prize winners, sports heroes, firefighters, scientists, and schoolteachers -- and with an introduction by basketball legend, businessman, and philanthropist Earvin "Magic" Johnson -- this collection gathers individuals who themselves are shining examples to tell us about the people who have illuminated their own lives. • How did Dana Reeve come to find such grit and grace when her fairy-tale prince was thrown from his real-life steed, paralyzed from the neck down? • What traits of baseball great Ted Williams have inspired war hero Senator John McCain since childhood? • What impact did Nelson Mandela have on boxing legend Muhammad Ali? • Why does one of the all-time greats of baseball, Yogi Berra, believe that he owes each of his legendary home runs to his brothers? • How did Michael J. Fox find a woman who would walk away from a spectacular career in finance in order to fight for a cure for Parkinson's disease at the helm of his nonprofit foundation? • Why does John Glenn, a man who flew into space twice and served a quarter century on the Senate floor, look up to his own wife, Annie Glenn, as the true hero in the family? In a world hungry for good examples, My Hero reminds us that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. It also teaches us that the words and deeds of those who inspire us are as varied as the stars that illuminate the night. The editors of My Hero and the contributors are donating all royalties from this book to the nonprofit My Hero Project.

Book excerpt: This is the book I wish I could've read when I was broken. It details my entire journey from marrying a man with a cluster B personality disorder, living with his abuse,my eventual escape from him after many years of marriage and then as he promised me through gritted teeth if I divorced him, losing everything including my children who he turned against me.We explore how I learned about cluster B disorders particularly Narcissism and how I healed myself from this toxic relationship. As I began healing I thought of myself as a caterpillar gathering knowledge and working towards a transition of huge changes towards a fully fledged butterfly and freedom.I used this knowledge to write manageable bite size 'Chrysalis to Butterfly' healing blogs designed to be read in order chunk by chunk through your recovery but also in titled sections so they can easily be referred back to.These have helped many survivors navigate their way out of abusive relationships and onto the healing road towards recovery.I've included my personal Parental Alienation Diary, which details how the Nex achieved total alienation of my children from me. Then I explore how I reconnected with my scapegoat son despite my daughter, the Nex golden child still being lost in the fog of alienation for nearly four years as this book was going to be published. All my advice and articles have either appeared in my secret abuse recovery group and been read by survivors or more recently on Tammy Mariposa public page where I write exclusively for target parents and have helped them to reconnect with their children using my 'drips of love' technique. When my son returned to me I held on through my joy pain and tears and continued to journal my sons reunification story over the year which provides valuable insight into how parental alienation is achieved and how the conditioning can be broken by the 'Drips of love' technique. So let me hold your hand and walk with you in your grief and pain and help you to heal yourself by firstly letting go of the guilt about moving forwards without your children so you can reach a mentally healthy place, so you are then in a position to rescue your children from their pathogenic parent.Firstly by understanding what is actually happening to your child, how your alienated child thinks and secondly how you can use this knowledge to reconnect with them and repair and nurture a loving relationship with them once again. We then explore how we can look to the future with our new knowledge by turning our pain into positivity and heal to such a point where we can live a life of love and abundance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 I began writing (and designing) short devotional pieces. We posted them on Instagram thinking that our friends and family would politely like them. But to our absolute shock, complete strangers liked them, too. A few years on, and here we are. I never dreamed that Pocket Fuel would turn into this practice and lead me to you. I'm forever grateful for it, no matter how rudimentary and humble our beginnings were. Not too long into our Instagram experiment, we found ourselves asking deeper questions around our faith. Everything we thought we knew; thought we had a handle on; thought was secure and for always; was challenged, questioned, and stripped bare. We experienced tragedy at home, and at work. We quit our jobs as Pastors, and started from scratch (faith and vocation) in our mid thirties. But through what felt like the death of all we thought we knew and would be, we found beauty and community. Our faith has a vibrancy that it was once devoid of. And our questions and doubts? I no-longer feel guilty for having them. They are an active part of my faith.
