Book excerpt: Julie's Story, 'My Life With Lupus', sums up the challenges and struggles of a young woman's life in dealing with the very unpredictable disease, Lupus. Julie was a young and energetic twenty- four- year- old woman with her whole life ahead of her. Planning the wedding of her dreams to her college sweetheart and finishing her Master's degree in Social Work, life couldn't get any better! Although life was headed in the right direction for Julie, her health had other plans. Julie began noticing vague symptoms which became bothersome to her studies. She hesitated to voice these problems due to the fact 'she looked fine on the outside'. For a year, Julie dealt with ongoing fatigue and pain which was attributed to the stress of planning a wedding and working toward a master's degree. Eventually, the symptoms worsened and Julie needed to seek medical attention. What would the doctors tell her? How would she react? Ten years later, Julie is talking about how she coped through the challenges and got through the difficult days in dealing with lupus. "Life is a rollercoaster", Julie says. "It has its ups and downs, but you just have to take one day at a time. I feel God has blessed me with Lupus, so that I can reach out to others. My life could be a whole lot worse, and I've seen a whole lot worse". Julie's Story, 'My Life With Lupus' has been written for all of those who suffer from an autoimmune disease. Especially the great friends I've made along the way. Some of the proceeds of this book will be donated to the Lupus Foundation to help find a cure for this very unpredictable, life-threatening disease!

Download or read book Lupus written by Sharon Moore and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to noninvasive, nontoxic therapies for lupus--written by a lupus survivor. • The only book to focus on alternative therapies for lupus. • Includes therapeutic approaches drawn from the fields of naturopathic medicine, nutritional medicine, environmental medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, nontoxic dentistry, energy medicine, and psychological healing. • Lupus affects more than four million Americans and does not respond well to conventional treatments. More than four million Americans (90 percent of them women) have been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, a chronic, debilitating disease of the autoimmune system that manifests itself with extreme fatigue, arthritic pain, rashes, and a host of other symptoms. Add to that the fact that lupus is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and the number of potential sufferers grows. Sharon Moore lived with lupus for several years before doctors finally put a name to it. The only therapies offered to her were pharmaceuticals--toxic drugs that could control or suppress some of her symptoms but couldn't cure her disease. Dissatisfied with this approach, she set about researching alternative treatments for her condition. Nine years later her health is greatly improved, and she has written this book to share the most effective natural healing techniques with other lupus sufferers. Chock full of specific, scientific, well-documented evidence on effective alternative treatments, this book is a godsend for anyone suffering from lupus. Moore provides a comprehensive diagnostic checklist and helps readers identify the possible causes of their illness, from environmental toxins and dental amalgam fillings to compromised liver function and poor nutrition. She offers ways to nurture the mind and spirit when living with chronic disease and shows readers how they can rebuild their lives. Equally important, she writes with the understanding of someone who's been there.

Book Synopsis Pathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus by : Alberta Hoi
Download or read book Pathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus written by Alberta Hoi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this contributed volume is to provide an overview of the latest translational research in the field of lupus pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on how these discoveries progress in parallel with therapeutic drug development. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifaceted disease with a number of well-defined immune pathways that are dysregulated, resulting in an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory injury at target organs. As knowledge of these pathways evolves to provide opportunities for targeted drug therapy and lays the foundation for personalized medicine, clinicians and researchers need to keep up with the ever-expanding medical literature. This book will critically appraise the current understanding of important immunological pathways that contribute to the pathogenesis of lupus. We will review the role of interferons as part of the innate immune defects that perpetuate the loss of self-tolerance in SLE. B cell hyperactivity, as a defining hallmark of SLE, and different strategies of B cell targeted therapy will be discussed. The role of co-stimulation or immune checkpoint molecules in activating B and T cells will be reviewed, as well as other cytokines that serve in the amplification loop promoting a more proinflammatory Th1 or Th17 responses. Intracellular targets, such as signaling molecules in the JAK/STAT pathway, or a variety of kinases and proteasomes, can cause a cascading downstream effect of transcriptional responses that are important in SLE. Immune homeostasis can also be restored by bolstering the naturally occurring anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Glucocorticoid, as a potent natural anti-inflammatory hormone, can mediate its effects by recruiting histone deacetylase that serve to repress gene transcription. Glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper is a gene upregulated by glucocorticoid that can be a potential target for development of anti-inflammatory strategy. Finally, T regulatory cells can be utilized to help restore to immune tolerance and are amongst the latest focus of therapeutic development in SLE.
