Promises to send a reply to Knox when he gets one. Relates that his troops only have three days of rations left so he sent someone to Philadelphia to get more. Comments that the people in Burlington (most likely Burlington, New Jersey) are so dispirited that he cannot get supplies from them without the warrant of a Magistrate & the bayonet to enforce it. Relates that the artificers need timber and he was asked by Col. Nelson, the state quartermaster, to procure his Excellency's warrant for the purpose.

Believes Washington felt as affectionately for Custis as if he were his real father, as he had raised him from childhood. Only other affectionate parents might be able to understand this misfortune. Has nothing to add about the disposition of the park, only that it might be in the vicinity of Head Quarters. Has no objection to Lamb paying his family a visit if Lt. Col. Stevens remains in camp: I see no reason for making any other arrangement of the corps this winter than what exists at the moment. Advises that Lamb's regiment form the park and Col. Crane's form the garrison of West Point and its defenses with the artificers to remain in Philadelphia. Written in the clerical hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp, and signed for Knox by him.

Indicates that the Country people are very Spirited in Giving their Assistance. The road has been reported to be difficult and by some accounts impassable, but Stevens affirms his determination to fulfill his orders. Stevens was on his way to reinforce the siege of Quebec, which ultimately failed. Crown Point was fortified during the summer of 1776 in anticipation of a British attack and was lost to the British in October of that year. Stevens was then a captain in Knox's regiment of artillery.
