Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If there were a Guinness Book of World Records entry for ‘amount of times having prayed the sinner’s prayer,’ I’m pretty sure I’d be a top contender,” says pastor and author J. D. Greear. He struggled for many years to gain an assurance of salvation and eventually learned he was not alone. “Lack of assurance” is epidemic among evangelical Christians. In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of present- ing the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of “asking Jesus into your heart” or “giving your life to Jesus” often gives false assurance to those who are not saved—and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives. He also answers the tough questions about assurance: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation? Such issues are handled with respect to the theological rigors they require, but Greear never loses his pastoral sensitivity or a communication technique that makes this message teachable to a wide audience from teens to adults.

I wish there was no more killing, dying, diseases in the world. I wish that we could rid ourselves of these horrible, horrible catastrophes that affect us all. Cancer eats the blood out of our bodies and makes us look like skeletons. There's no hope, but we are doomed to death just like the world is doomed to destruction. Hate, hate, hate is everywhere. There is no love nowhere. If only we could start loving each other like God meant for it to be. I wonder how many of us get up in the morning and say Good morning, neighbors! I love you. None of us, cause we dont love ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yank Rachell and his mandolin playing style moved every musician lucky enough to hear him perform in the early sixties. When he died in April 1997, he left behind a stack of unanswered requests to tour Europe and to play blues festivals in the United States. In Blues Mandolin Man: The Life and Music of Yank Rachell, Richard Congress delivers the first biography of a family man whose playing inspired and energized the likes of David Honeyboy Edwards, Sleepy John Estes, and Henry Townsend. No other biography discusses the mandolin's influence and role in the blues. Guitar great Ry Cooder said, "Yank's style fascinated me because it had a lot of power and it's very raw-and what a great thing to do, just attack this little instrument like that." Charlie Musselwhite, the noted harp player, worked with Rachell and club hopped in Chicago with the elder bluesman. "He just had a great spirit about him," Musselwhite said of Rachell's playing and singing, "really just shouting it out. If the world was made up of people like Yank Rachell it would be a wonderful place to live." Blues Mandolin Man chronicles the life, times, and music of a man who was born into a family of sharecroppers in 1910 in rural western Tennessee. An active musician for 75 years, Rachell mastered several musical instruments and first recorded for Victor in Memphis in 1929. Through the blues, Rachell's world expanded to include Chicago, New York, recording studios and, after the sixties, radio, TV, and national and European tours. Yank's recollections reveal new information about personalities and events that will delight blues history buffs. Rich appendixes detail Yank's mandolin and guitar style and his place in the blues tradition. For this book Richard Congress, who reissued two of Rachell's old LPs in CD format, worked closely with him to record memories spanning decades of blues playing. Congress tells a compelling and engaging story about a colorful and thoughtful character who as a child picked cotton and plowed a field behind a mule, who grew to manhood coping with the southern Jim Crow system, and who participated in the creation and perpetuation of the blues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13)""that is exactly what Jesus done for us. Jesus gave his life to pay the debt that we owed and could not pay, and he paid the debt that he did not owe, which was our debt to sin. Now that is costly. One Sunday while preaching, I heard God say, "Look to your left." I did, and there was some writing on the wall that said, "Your debt to sin has been paid in full: it was written in blood." I stopped, and I screamed. I read to the congregation what was written on the wall. Some tried seeing it, but they couldn't""they had to receive the vision that God had given unto me. The blood of Jesus paying our debt to sin is the costly anointing. Jesus made himself a curse to redeem us from the curse of the law. Jesus bore our sins in his body as he hanged on the cross; he bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. The writer of Hebrews said, "For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities." That is costly. After writing my book, I Overcame by the Blood of the Lamb, I heard God say, "You obtained my anointing by the things that I suffered you to go through. I want you to title this book The Costly Anointing." There is nothing that can compensate for the shedding of Jesus's blood.

Book excerpt: Poetry can be a medicine that heals and sustains. Everyone had their own way of surviving. Some people escape from circumstances in their lives by drinking, doing drugs, falling into depression, and many other things, not knowing that there is a healthier way out and most importantly, seeing hope, peace and light at the end! I survived with everyday life problems by reading and writing poetry. Poetry is a form of expression. Poetry can touch your heart and soul forever making a change in your life for the better. Allowing you to forget about your past failures and hurts and motivating you to move forward into the future with much success and happiness. Its something about poetry that frees the spirit; the words in a poem seem to take wings that can fly in and out of our spirits that only the eye of the spirit and the ear of the heart can define. It is often said that poetry travels straight to ones heart. We all hurt at times, from failed relationships, the death of a loved one, sickness, addiction or whatever. But know that God sees you and all you are going through and He is working on your behalf whether you see it or not. Just trust in God for He has all the answers. My reason for writing Freedom Love is to help heal hurting people through my poetry. Letting them know that I understand what they are feeling and what they are going through, but also letting them know that you can overcome the obstacles in your life, filled with peace, love, happiness, success, direction, and answers. Then you will be able to move forward with fulfilling your dreams and future goals, trusting and having faith in God.
