Book excerpt: Study of parasitology, like any other branch of biological science, has in recent years been increasingly revealing and rewarding with enrichment and embellishment by basic sciences, specially with application of spectacular advances in molecular biology and biotechnology. Such a fruitful fusion of more than one discipline has now come to characterise more than ever before our approach to the subject. This volume of helminthology with contributions from a galaxy of distinguished scientists in specific areas, bears an eloquent testimony to the gratifying yield that accrues from cross fertilisation of multiple disciplines and able support from basic sciences. Matazoan parasites, helminths, living in more than one host in different stages of development, present an intricate spectrum of host-parasite relationship, which has evolved through diverse frame and flow of ecologic circumstances. The situation is further complicated, as elaborated here, by genotypic and phenotypic variations, which profoundly influence the dynamic interaction between hosts and parasites and determine consequently survival and propagation of the latter. Indeed, one of the important messages upheld in this book is that genetic endowment of parasites plays a pivotal role in their immunogenicity, pathogenicity, response to variable environmental composition, including drug response and also their transmission dynamics and epidemiology. Evolution of parasitic helminths with concomitant physiologic and morphologic alterations have been traced from free-living stage to development of host-specificity of different degrees and parasitic speciation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new and fully revised edition of Jeffrey and Leach: Atlas of Medical Helminthology and Protozoology. Helminths (worms) and similar parasites are a major medical problem in much of the world and perhaps the largest single cause of morbidity and mortality (eg malaria, elephantiasis, trypanosmiasis). The diagnosis of these conditions still largely rests on the microscopic examination of, for example, faeces. This atlas illustrates the different myriad of different organisms and how to identify them.

This Fourth Edition has been developed and enhanced into a two-part reference to reflect recent advances in the field, modern teaching practice, and updated parasite taxonomic classification systems. Part One contains expanded individual parasite descriptions using current taxonomic status within three new chapters on Helminthology, Protozoology and Entomology. Further updated chapters are provided on: The laboratory diagnosis of parasitism, Antiparasitics, The epidemiology of parasitic diseases, and Host resistance to parasitic diseases. Host species chapters have been retained and expanded and are found in Part Two of the edition. KEY FEATURES Tailored for those directly involved in the diagnosis, treatment and control of parasitic diseases of domestic animals Compatible with the diversity of current parasitology teaching modules – both for teaching parasite systematics and diseases on a host-organ basis Offers the most detailed parasite descriptions available today for teachers, research groups, veterinarians in practice and in government service, and others involved in aspects of parasitic disease Thoroughly revised and restructured to reflect the most up-to-date advancements in the field, Veterinary Parasitology, Fourth Edition, enhances its stellar reputation as the gold standard reference text for the global veterinary profession.

No comparable atlas or publication of helminth parasites and their effect on the host animal exists. It demonstrates the life cycle stages, clinical conditions, diagnostic measures, fecal examination techniques, pathology and epidemiology relevant to helminths of domestic and companion animals. The atlas will be an invaluable reference work in veterinary schools, medical schools, and schools of public health, at both undergraduate and graduate teaching levels. It will be of great assistance to parasitologists, animal and human healthcare personnel, and diagnostic and research personnel, in better understanding and interpreting individual parasites and their effect on the host animal.
