At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. We felt the reason for such debate was because the discipline was in a great state of flux, with many new concepts and approaches being introduced with increasing frequency. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Our intent was to cover several broad areas, fully recognizing that breadth negates depth (at least with a publisher's limitation on the number of pages). We felt it important to consider patterns amongst different kinds of hosts because this is where we had disagreed among ourselves.

About 100 species have been reported from humans, usually producing asymptomatic infection or mild symptoms. However, about 20 species are of public health importance causing severe or even fatal infections. In many parts of Africa parasitic helminths are responsible for enormous economic losses, hampering rural development programmes and reducing the pace of economic growth. Many parasitic helminths are either zoonoses (diseases naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man) or have evolved from animal parasites. The modification of the environment through wars, famine and the ever expanding and increasingly mobile human population brings people into close contact with new environments and wildlife species which makes the study and control of zoonoses of special interest and complexity. In Africa, the transmission of helminth parasites is highly influenced by the ever changing social and cultural differences between diverse groups of peoples and their interaction with wild and domestic animals. It is not surprising, therefore, that approaches to the study and control of parasitic zoonoses require intersectoral cooperation between physicians, veterinarians, parasitologists, zoologists, demographers, anthropologists, engineers and economists to provide the breadth of knowledge and expertise required to develop our understanding of these diseases and to devise methods for their control. Book excerpt: Helminth eggs represent an important challenge to environmental engineers as they are among the most difficult biological parasites to inactivate in wastewater and sludge. Even though no official data on helminthiasis exist, it is estimated that more than 2.6 billion people are affected. These parasites are of concern in developing countries, particularly in those areas where the reuse of wastewater and sludge for agriculture is common. With regard to this, the unrestricted use of wastewater for irrigation presents a serious health risk due to the dissemination of pathogens, particularly helminth eggs. Helminth eggs survive in water, soil, and crops for several months and over much longer periods than other microorganisms. Therefore, and in order to minimize risk, several guidelines and regulations exist which limit their content in wastewater and sludge. Risk assessment estimates that such regulations may be less strict in developing countries where higher concentrations of helminth eggs occur in wastewater and sludge. These eggs need to be removed from wastewater and inactivated in sludge using certain treatment processes, some of which are not feasible in developing countries. Adequate methods are needed to precisely identify and quantify helminth eggs in environmental samples. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to address helminthiasis in environmental engineering issues.

Noting that the use of wastewater for crop irrigation is becoming increasingly common, the book aims to help laboratories ensure that wastewaters intended for agricultural use comply with WHO guideline values for microbiological quality. These values were previously established by WHO in order to protect against the risk that wastewater irrigation may facilitate the transmission of excreta-related diseases. Two major risks are addressed: the transmission of intestinal nematode infections to crop consumers and agricultural workers, and the transmission to crop consumers of faecal bacterial diseases, including bacterial diarrhoea and dysentery, typhoid and cholera. Analytical procedures recommended in the manual are simple and effective, require minimum equipment, and can be carried out by persons with little or no previous parasitological or microbiological experience. All procedures are fully explained and clearly illustrated in over 40 photographs, including 20 color plates. Relevant laboratory skills are also explained with the aim of encouraging standardized performance of procedures. The manual has three chapters. The first, on sanitary parasitology, provides full details for the performance of the modified Bailenger method for the enumeration of intestinal helminth eggs in wastewater. A brief explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of this method is followed by a list of the simple equipment and consumables required, and an illustrated guide to each step in the analysis. Chapter two, on sanitary bacteriology, provides similarly detailed information for three procedures recommended for the enumeration of faecal coliform bacteria: two most probable number methods and a membrane filtration method.
