Book Synopsis Hello Professor by : Vanessa Siddle Walker
Download or read book Hello Professor written by Vanessa Siddle Walker and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-08-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many black school principals, Ulysses Byas, who served the Gainesville, Georgia, school system in the 1950s and 1960s, was reverently addressed by community members as "Professor." He kept copious notes and records throughout his career, documenting efforts to improve the education of blacks. Through conversations with Byas and access to his extensive archives on his principalship, Vanessa Siddle Walker finds that black principals were well positioned in the community to serve as conduits of ideas, knowledge, and tools to support black resistance to officially sanctioned regressive educational systems in the Jim Crow South. Walker explains that principals participated in local, regional, and national associations, comprising a black educational network through which power structures were formed and ideas were spread to schools across the South. The professor enabled local school empowerment and applied the collective wisdom of the network to pursue common school projects such as pressuring school superintendents for funding, structuring professional development for teachers, and generating local action that was informed by research in academic practice. The professor was uniquely positioned to learn about and deploy resources made available through these networks. Walker's record of the transfer of ideology from black organizations into a local setting illuminates the remembered activities of black schools throughout the South and recalls for a new generation the role of the professor in uplifting black communities.

Download or read book Contracted Cowboy written by Liz Isaacson and published by AEJ Creative Works. This book was released on with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From USA Today Bestselling and Top 10 Kindle Unlimited All-Star author, Liz Isaacson, comes a brand new Christian cowboy romance series. Stuffed with family saga, your favorite tropes - like fake dating, enemies to lovers, forbidden relationships, office romance, and unrequited crushes - you'll fall in love at the Quinn Family Ranch! A fake ad brings a cowboy to Georgia's door just in time for all the Quinn family holiday parties, so she hires Logan to be her boyfriend. Nothing can go wrong with this plan...except she might lose her heart to her newly contracted cowboy. Georgia Quinn doesn't particularly love being one of the dozens of Quinns in Quinn Valley. Her family is just so loud, you know? And she's certainly not looking forward to a holiday season full of family get-togethers when she has to do everything alone after her painful break-up months ago. When her granny mentions the holidays would be more fun with a boyfriend, Georgia seizes onto the idea and puts out an ad for someone to come fix the barn at the ranch. But what they really need to fix is her heart, and there's no one more suited for her than carpenter and cowboy Logan Locke. Logan's the quiet type, and he hasn't had a serious relationship in a long time. But he desperately needs the money, and if Georgia needs her barn finished or a date to a party, he doesn't care as long as he gets paid. Georgia and Logan pose as the perfect couple, showing her ex that she's moved on when she hasn't and his family that he can be serious about something when he never has been before. But how badly will they both crash and burn if they let their feelings become real in a relationship that is anything but?
Download or read book The Bucket List written by Georgia Clark and published by Atria/Emily Bestler Books. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking.” —People “Witty, sexy.” —Los Angeles Times #1 Cosmopolitan Best New Books of Summer PureWow Best Reads of Summer From the author of the critically acclaimed “lively and engrossing parable for women of all generations” (Harper’s Bazaar) The Regulars, comes a deeply funny and thoughtful tale of a young woman who embarks on an unforgettable bucket list adventure. Twenty-five-old Lacey Whitman is blindsided when she’s diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene mutation: the “breast cancer” gene. Her high hereditary risk forces a decision: increased surveillance or the more radical step of a preventative double mastectomy. Lacey doesn't want to lose her breasts. For one, she’s juggling two career paths. Secondly, small-town Lacey’s not so in touch with her sexuality: she doesn’t want to sacrifice her breasts before she’s had the chance to give them their hey-day. To help her make her choice, she (and her friends) creates a “boob bucket list”: everything she wants do with and for her boobs before a possible surgery. This kicks off a year of sensual exploration and sexual entertainment for the quick-witted Lacey Whitman. The Bucket List cleverly and compassionately explores Lacey’s relationship to her body and her future. Both are things Lacey thought she could control through hard work and sacrifice. But the future, it turns out, is more complicated than she could ever imagine. Featuring the pitch-perfect “compulsively delicious” (Redbook) prose of The Regulars, The Bucket List is perfect for fans of Amy Poeppel and Sophie Kinsella.

SOFT SPOT: Asia Knowles’ life has been on a downhill slide for as long as she can remember, but with her promotion at work and her new apartment on charming Hale Street, things are finally starting to look up. When a polished and persistent CEO barges into her world, Asia does what she can to keep her less-than-polished background to herself. The more she says no to a date, the more determined he becomes to change her mind. Jackson Lowell has worked hard for everything he has—perhaps, as his best friend points out, a little too single-mindedly. When his friend challenges him to go on a “real” date, not a business function with a blind date, Asia Knowles seems like the perfect choice. Everything from her sunshine-bright outfits to her don’t-get-too-close vibe draws him in. And her penchant for saying no, well…it might just be the biggest challenge he’s encountered yet. Luckily he’s learned that the bigger the challenge, the bigger the payoff. MORE THAN WORDS: Roxanne Giardini’s greatest life achievement is writing a cat food jingle. She yearns to do more with her life, but it isn’t until she tours an old recording studio that she develops a plan for her future. The building is destined to become a pile of rubble and Roxie has only weeks to save it. Fine-tuning her strategy turns out to be easier than ignoring the man working against her - the tall, handsome financial planner who makes her want to write love songs rather than business proposals. Will Darden deals in facts and numbers. He’s used to being the voice of reason in Hale Street’s choir of dreamers, and the hard truth is the old recording studio has to go. His proposal is solid, every detail double-checked. Then a lyricist with a stubborn streak as wide as the blue strip in her hair makes it her mission to save the crumbling wreck and detonates his perfect plan. But her effect on him is what really shakes his foundation. When the dreamer and the realist fight for the future of the old recording studio, will they be able to come up with anything More Than Words? As a paralegal at an up-and-coming law firm on idyllic Hale Street in Nashville, Georgia buried her past – and her dreams – to build a new life. Convincing Cooper Quinn, a reclusive and cranky-but-oh-so-devastating bookstore owner, to open up is part of her new life plan. Cooper's quiet bookstore life suits him just fine, and he's determined to avoid the chaos that inevitably follows Georgia. She's strong and loud and beautiful. Indestructible. But when one frustrated kiss leads to a thousand, Cooper realizes there is more to Georgia than meets the eye and her force-of-nature personality just might be destined to change his world forever. Can you call it running away when you find the place you were always meant to be?
