Book excerpt: Ancient seal impressions once employed to seal a variety of objects, particularly different kinds of documents, offer a wealth of information not only about iconography, but also about the dissemination of ideas and beliefs. Their use provides evidence about the continuation, transformation, and mutual influences effecting local traditions, and casts light on administrative and bureaucratic practices. This volume brings together conference papers by twelve specialists focusing on the Hellenistic period (c. 325-25 BCE), a period still deserving of more scholarly attention. The hoards discussed by the various authors include those from Delos, Doliche, Edfu, Kedesh, Pistiros, Seleucia-on-the-Tigris, Selinunte and Uruk. The volume's themes range from the persistence of pharaonic imagery on Ptolemaic sealings and Greek influence on Sicilian seals to the survival of Mesopotamian traditions on Parthian clay tablets and the use of Hellenistic iconography on Bactrian finger rings. Ptolemaic and Seleucid seal impressions especially offer clues for identifying royal portraits in other media. The papers contextualize the subject within related fields of glyptics and numismatics, and in so doing elucidate day-to-day realities of social, public and private archival practices beyond political and elite levels of life. This publication-the first of its kind in twenty-five years-illuminates aspects of Hellenistic history that have long remained abstruse, ignored or inaccessible without the aid of seal impressions.

Book excerpt: This book accounts for the results of fieldwork in Doliche, located in Gaziantep, South East Turkey. Doliche was an important city of ancient North Syria which continued to thrive into the Middle Ages. For the first time, an international research project started to explore the site in 2015. The chapters collected in this volume discuss the main discoveries of the first seasons. It is divided in two parts. The first part considers the main excavation results, with a particular emphasis on a newly discovered early Christian basilica and its decoration. This section also contains the first comprehensive discussion of a newly discovered Roman Imperial hypogeum from the city necropolis. The chapters of the second part deal with the preliminary findings from an intra-urban intensive survey. Between 2017 and 2019, a significant portion of the city area has been investigated, and the results of the survey offer new insights in the spatial and chronological of the city. The chapters consider methodological questions, but also discuss artefact groups. In general, the results presented in this volume add to the knowledge of urbanism in Roman and Late antique North Syria.

The conquests of Alexander the Great and his Successors not only radically reshaped the political landscape, but also significantly accelerated cultural change: in recent decades there has been an important historiographical emphasis on the study of the non-Greek cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean, but less focus on how Greek cultural elements became increasingly visible. Although the process of cross-cultural interaction differed greatly across Asia Minor, Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia, the same overarching questions apply: why did the non-Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean engage so closely with Greek cultural forms as well as political practices, and how did this engagement translate into their daily lives? In exploring the versatility and adaptability of Greek political structures, such as the polis, and the ways in which Greek and non-Greek cultures interacted in fields such as medicine, literature, and art, the essays in this volume aim to provide new insight into these questions. At the same time, they prompt a re-interrogation of the process of Hellenization, exploring whether it is still a useful concept for explaining and understanding the dynamics of cultural exchange in the Eastern Mediterranean of this period.
