Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of juvenile salmon data collected during surveys in Hecate Strait in the summers of 1986 and 1987 to gather information on the abundance, species composition, size composition, and diet for validation of a migration model. The model predicts juvenile salmon abundance, size, and food resources requirements in Hecate Strait, based on assumptions about smolt production, growth rates, mortality rates, run timing, migration speed, and the migration route, for each species from 6 B.C. coastal regions. If the model is validated, it will assist in evaluating how Hecate Strait is used as a migration corridor and rearing area by juvenile salmon. Juvenile salmon sex ratios, size composition, length-weight relationships, and interspecific correlations of size and catch rate among purse seine sets are all discussed in the report.

Book excerpt: The Pacific Biological Station chartered a drum seiner for two cruises to Hecate Strait that took place from July 6-12 and July 30 - August 3, 1986. The primary purpose of the cruises was to gather data on species composition, size composition, and diet of the juvenile salmon population of Hecate Strait. This information will be used to validate predictions of juvenile salmon occurrence in Hecate Strait by a model which is responsive to different assumptions about coastal migratory behaviour. The additional objectives were to gather information on the associated non-salmonid catch and on the temperature structure of Hecate Strait in the summer. This report presents the sampling and catch information collected, as well as the vertical temperature profiles of the sampled waters.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggregations of juvenile chinook and coho salmon are known to exist over Swiftsure and other banks, which lie on the continental shelf off southwest Vancouver Island. These aggregations are hypothesized to form in response to eddies caused by tidal current rectification. In the spring and fall, the summer and winter circulation undergoes a transition phase during which stable components of shelf circulation break down. It is hypothesized that these events cause the dispersal and redistribution of the salmon aggregations. Employing commercial trolling methods, an exploratory survey was conducted on Swiftsure and Amphitrite Banks in September, October, and November of 1987 to obtain data on juvenile abundance, distribution, and size and species compositions before and during the fall transition. This report summarizes the information obtained.
Book Synopsis Modelling the Coastal Migration of Juvenile Salmon Through Hecate Strait, British Columbia by : Michael Charles Healey
Download or read book Modelling the Coastal Migration of Juvenile Salmon Through Hecate Strait, British Columbia written by Michael Charles Healey and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, a wide ranging study was initiated of the fish community of Hecate Strait. This report summarizes predictions of a model of juvenile salmon migration through Hecate Strait that was part of that study. The model predicts seasonal abundance, size, and food resource requirements of juvenile salmon in the Strait based on estimates of juvenile production in various regions of the coast, seasonal migration rates and timing, growth rates, mortality rates, and food conversion rates under different assumptions about the migratory routes followed by juveniles from different parts of the coast.

Download or read book Climate Change and Northern Fish Populations written by National Research Council Canada and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These documents summarize some of the recent studies of the relationships among climate, the aquatic environment, and the dynamics of fish populations. The studies are mostly from the North Pacific ocean, but there are reports of investigations from the North Atlatic Ocean and from fresh water. Various papers include numerous examples of the relationships between fish abundance trends and the environment.
