Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdom of heaven--what is it exactly? Only one book in the Bible uses this terminology: the gospel of Matthew, and it presents it thirty-three times in just twenty-eight chapters. Though the kingdom of God appears as well in the work, it appears separate from the kingdom of heaven, and in full alignment with the seven kingdom types of Scripture. In substance, this kingdom relates to the literal reign of Christ on earth. But Matthew uses it more to refer to the time just before it is set up on earth. He uses it more to speak of conditions that are to exist at the end of the tribulation prior to the kingdom age. This makes his presentation unique and unlike any other. In its prime position, which is first and foremost in the order of the gospels and first and foremost in the order of the New Testament, this gospel lays the groundwork for all that comes after it and is said by others. Written from a disciple's perspective, it reveals the inner workings of Jesus's ministry on earth, going beyond the teachings and miracles to give the purpose behind these things and explain what was going on behind the scenes, showing that, more than Christ, Jesus was the Savior of the world and a "King." The title "King of kings and Lord of lords," from the last book of the Bible, resonates with the account. The gospel follows a theme from beginning to end. Every part contributes to the whole. The textual arrangement of prophetic precision brings everything together. And though written to Jews of the first century, shortly after the time of Jesus's ascension, grasped today, these timeless truths compel one to live the Christian life on a higher plane.

Book excerpt: "In this succinct yet ample work, Zhao Tingyang as one of China's most distinguished and respected intellectuals, provides a profoundly original philosophical interpretation of China's story. Over the past few decades, the question "where did China come from?" has absorbed the thoughts of many of China's best historians. Zhao, keenly aware of the persistent and pernicious asymmetry in the prevailing way scholars have gone about theorizing China according to Western concepts and categories, has tasked both Chinese and Western scholars alike to "rethink China." To this end, Zhao introduces what he terms a distinctively Chinese centripetal "whirlpool" model of world order to interpret the historical progression of China's "All-Under-Heaven" Tianxia identity construction on the central plain of China. In this book, Zhao forwards a novel and compelling thesis on not only how we should understand China, but also until recently, how China has understood itself"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tian, or Heaven, had multiple meanings in early China. It had been used since the Western Zhou to indicate both the sky and the highest god, and later came to be regarded as a force driving the movement of the cosmos and as a home to deities and imaginary animals. By the Han dynasty, which saw an outpouring of visual materials depicting Heaven, the concept of Heaven encompassed an immortal realm to which humans could ascend after death. Using excavated materials, Lillian Tseng shows how Han artisans transformed various notions of Heaven—as the mandate, the fantasy, and the sky—into pictorial entities. The Han Heaven was not indicated by what the artisans looked at, but rather was suggested by what they looked into. Artisans attained the visibility of Heaven by appropriating and modifying related knowledge of cosmology, mythology, astronomy. Thus the depiction of Heaven in Han China reflected an interface of image and knowledge. By examining Heaven as depicted in ritual buildings, on household utensils, and in the embellishments of funerary settings, Tseng maintains that visibility can hold up a mirror to visuality; Heaven was culturally constructed and should be culturally reconstructed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people nowadays are confused about the topic of heaven, skeptical about it, or think it beyond description. This book argues that, without venturing into the esoteric or fanciful, we can know more about heaven than we think. Did you know, for instance, that heavenly rest will be exciting and dynamic? That we will be overwhelmed and transformed by the beauty of God? That we will dance with the Trinity, sing with the angels, and enjoy the delightful company of the saints (including the saints we have known and loved on earth)? The book will deal with what we will be doing in the Holy City and in the magnificence of the new creation, and what it means to say that we will feast at the heavenly banquet. If you want answers to these questions, at once inspired by Christian tradition and modern insight, and presented in a fresh and compelling manner, this book is for you. It is written not only for theologians and specialists but also for inquiring Catholics and other Christians seeking to deepen their understanding of life after death. It will serve theology students, seminarians, clergy, religious educators, and parish study groups. Readers willing to invest time and energy in the book will find their view of heaven deepened and expanded.

They come from a very inspired place that speaks of a great desire to understand ourselves. The elusive butterfly in all of us, that out of its innate curiosity to learn and experience things by necessity, transforms itself. They also speak of the unique place that we all share in the divine tapestry we call life and how we are all intimately connected. The poems reflect on the betrayal and hypocrisy that we all inevitably encounter on our journey through life. Most importantly, a message of hope and joy runs through them, so that we are always reminded that even in our darkest moments, the light of truth and love has never abandoned us. The book also shares some of the stories that inspired and motivated some of the poems. They run the gamut, from gut-wrenching tearjerkers to deeply impassioned pleas for universal kindness to the whimsical frolic of a playful little child. Included is a section titled Musings on Life. These are philosophic perspectives intended to be life lessons for the reader. It's been said that not all men are masters, but all masters have been men. Along that same line of thinking, the author feels that although not all philosophers are poets, all poets are philosophers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ngo Dinh Diem, the first president of the Republic of Vietnam, possessed the Confucian "Mandate of Heaven", a moral and political authority that was widely recognized by all Vietnamese. This devout Roman Catholic leader never lost this mandate in the eyes of his people; rather, he was taken down by a military coup sponsored by the U.S. government, which resulted in his brutal murder. The commonly held view runs contrary to the above assertion by military historian Geoffrey Shaw. According to many American historians, President Diem was a corrupt leader whose tyrannical actions lost him the loyalty of his people and the possibility of a military victory over the North Vietnamese. The Kennedy Administration, they argue, had to withdraw its support of Diem. Based on his research of original sources, including declassified documents of the U.S. government, Shaw chronicles the Kennedy administration's betrayal of this ally, which proved to be not only a moral failure but also a political disaster that led America into a protracted and costly war. Along the way, Shaw reveals a President Diem very different from the despot portrayed by the press during its coverage of Vietnam. From eyewitness accounts of military, intelligence, and diplomatic sources, Shaw draws the portrait of a man with rare integrity, a patriot who strove to free his country from Western colonialism while protecting it from Communism. "A candid account of the killing of Ngo Dinh Diem, the reasons for it, who was responsible, why it happened, and the disastrous results. Particularly agonizing for Americans who read this clearly stated and tightly argued book is the fact that the final Vietnam defeat was not really on battle grounds, but on political and moral grounds. The Vietnam War need not have been lost. Overwhelming evidence supports it." - From the Foreword by James V. Schall, S.J., Professor Emeritus, Georgetown University "Did I find a veritable Conradian 'Heart of Darkness'? Yes, I did, but it was not in the quarter to which all popular American sources were pointing their accusatory fingers; in other words, not in Saigon but, paradoxically, within the Department of State back in Washington, D.C., and within President Kennedy's closest White House advisory circle. The actions of these men led to Diem's murder. And with his death, nine and a half years of careful work and partnership between the United States and South Vietnam was undone." - Geoffrey Shaw, from the Preface
