Book excerpt: Correlations of the transport property estimates of NASA TR R-50 are employed to determine locally similar solutions of the laminar boundary-layer equations for air in chemical equilibrium. Exact solutions for flat-plate flow, axisymmetric stagnation flow, and stagnation flow for yawed infinite cylinder are obtained, and a correlation formula for the heat-transfer distribution function for arbitrary favorable pressure gradient is determined. Extension to three-dimensional flows with small cross flow is briefly described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PC-Aided Numerical Heat Transfer and Convective Flow is intended as a graduate course textbook for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering students as well as a reference book for practitioners interested in analytical and numerical treatments in the subject. The book is written so that the reader can use the enclosed diskette, with the aid of a personal computer, to systematically learn both analytical and numerical approaches associated with fluid flow and heat transfer without resorting to complex mathematical treatments. This is the first book that not only describes solution methodologies but also provides complete programs ranging from SOLODE to SAINTS for integration of Navier-Stokes equation. The book covers boundary layer flows to fully elliptic flows, laminar flows to turbulent flows, and free convection to forced convection. The student will learn about convection in porous media, a new field of rapid growth in contemporary heat transfer research. A basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer is assumed. It is also assumed that the student knows the basics of Fortran and has access to a personal computer. The material can be presented in a one-semester course or with selective coverage in a seminar.

Book excerpt: This short primer provides a concise and tutorial-style introduction to transport phenomena in Newtonian fluids , in particular the transport of mass, energy and momentum. The reader will find detailed derivations of the transport equations for these phenomena, as well as selected analytical solutions to the transport equations in some simple geometries. After a brief introduction to the basic mathematics used in the text, Chapter 2, which deals with momentum transport, presents a derivation of the Navier-Stokes-Duhem equation describing the basic flow in a Newtonian fluid. Also provided at this stage are the derivations of the Bernoulli equation, the pressure equation and the wave equation for sound waves. The boundary layer, turbulent flow and flow separation are briefly reviewed. Chapter 3, which addresses energy transport caused by thermal conduction and convection, examines a derivation of the heat transport equation. Finally, Chapter 4, which focuses on mass transport caused by diffusion and convection, discusses a derivation of the mass transport equation.

Book excerpt: "The object of this investigation is to provide a simple means of determining the heat transfer from a flat plate which has an unheated leading length x0. The case of steady, two-dimensional, laminar flow of an incompressible fluid with a Prandtl number of less than one is considered. Since there exists an unheated length and the Prandtl number of the fluid is less than one, the thermal boundary layer intersects the flow boundary layer. Thus, the solution of the problem divides into two regions. In this study, the problem is solved analytically by employing the energy integral equation. The temperature profile and velocity profile of the fluid are expressed using both linear and cubic polynomials. When the thermal boundary layer is outside the hydrodynamic boundary layer, the integration is performed in two operations. The result obtained from the energy integral equation by substituting both the temperature and velocity profiles is a first order, non-linear differential equation. The solution of this differential equation for the cubic profile case is rather complicated and tedious. However, curves are provided which give the appropriate parameters of the final results. The local and average convective coefficients can then be deduced based on the solution of this differential equation. The results from this investigation are compared with those of other investigators for several special cases. An excellent agreement is obtained between the two sets of results. It is found that significant errors may occur if previous solutions for special cases are employed for the general situation"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written with the idea of providing the fundamentals for those who are interested in the field of heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids. It is well recognized that non-Newtonian fluids are encountered in a number of transport processes and estimation of the heat transfer characteristics in the presence of these fluids requires analysis of equations that are far more complex than those encountered for Newtonian fluids. A deliberate effort has been made to demonstrate the methods of simplification of the complex equations and to put forth analytical expressions for the various heat transfer situations in as vivid a manner as possible. The book covers a broad range of topics from forced, natural and mixed convection without and with porous media. Laminar as well as turbulent flow heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids have been treated and the criterion for transition from laminar to turbulent flow for natural convection has been established. The heat transfer characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids from inelastic power-law fluids to viscoelastic second-order fluids and mildly elastic drag reducing fluids are covered. This book can serve the needs of undergraduates, graduates and industry personnel from the fields of chemical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering and polymer engineering.
