This book was released on 1967 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of experimental investigations of the equilibrium temperature and heat transfer of a sphere in a supersonic rarefied air flow are discussed. The experiments were performed in an evacuated wind tunnel; the working flows were produced by three conical nozzles. The equilibrium temperature of the sphere was measured by the stationary method. The model was kept in the flow until its temperature stopped varying with time. The mean heat-transfer coefficients were measured by the non-steady-state method. The results are shown in graphic form. (Author).

Book excerpt: Results of experimental investigations of the heat transfer and equilibrium temperature of a sphere in supersonic rarefied air flows are presented and the experimental setup and measuring techniques are described. The experiments were carried out with four spheres of electrolytic copper from 2.9 to 19.75 mm in diameter in a low-density wind tunnel. The experiments associated with investigation of the equilibrium temperature were separated into three groups according to Mach number: (1) M = 2.25 to 2.6; (2) 5.5 to 6.25; (3) 7.5 to 8 with the results presented as the dependence of the recovery coefficient r on R/M. The investigations of heat transfer were carried out in the Mach range from 6.2 to 6.35 and the results are presented as the dependence of the Nusselt number on the Reynolds number calculated with the sphere diameter and flow parameters behind a normal shock wave. A comparison of these results with data obtained by Drake, Becker, Eberley and Touryan shows good agreement. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Princeton Aeronautical Paperback series designed to bring to students and research engineers outstanding portions of the twelve-volume High Speed Aerodynamics and Jet Propulsion series. These books have been prepared by direct reproduction of the text from the original series and no attempt has been made to provide introductory material or to eliminate cross reference to other portions of the original volumes. Originally published in 1961. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Book Synopsis Calculation of Surface Temperatures in Steady Supersonic Flight by : George P. Wood
Download or read book Calculation of Surface Temperatures in Steady Supersonic Flight written by George P. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface temperatures were calculated for bodies in steady supersonic flight at Mach numbers from 2 to 10 and for altitudes from 50,000 and 200,000 feet and emissivities from 0 to 1. The importance of the effects of radiation and convection was determined. It was found, under the assumption of an isothermal atmosphere, that the gain of heat from the air by convection decreases at constant Mach number as the altitude is increased. Equilibrium between convection and radiation is established at temperatures that that consequently decrease as altitude is increased. In general, therefore, at sufficiently high altitudes the surface temperature is considerably less than the stagnation temperature. At a Mach number of 8, for example, the stagnation temperature is 4800 degrees F absolute and the equilibrium surface temperature for an emissivity of 0.5 is 3800 degress F absolute at 50,000 feet and decreases to 1350 degrees F at 200,000 feet.

Download or read book The Transfer of Heat from a Plate in the Supersonic Flow of Rarefield Air written by Yu A. Koshmarov and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the transfer of heat and the equilibrium temperature of a flat plate of limited thickness (limited in comparison with the mean molecular free path in the free gas stream), streamlined by a supersonic flow of rarefied air at a zero angle of attack. The models of the plate were of sufficient span to permit reference of the results of the investigations to the case of plane streamlining (plates of infinite span). The measurements of the heat-transfer coefficient and of the equilibrium temperatures were carried out at Mach number values ranging from 2.6 to 9. The investigations encompassed various streamlining conditions, beginning from the case in which the entire surface of the plate is subjected to virtually free-molecular gas flow and concluding with the case in which the flow of the gas over virtually the entire plate corresponds to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier continuum regime.
