Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Torah and its interpretation both as a recurring theme in the early rabbinic commentary and as the very practice of the commentary. It studies the phenomenon of ancient rabbinic scriptural commentary in relation to the perspectives of literary and historical criticisms and their complex intersection. The author discusses extensively the nature of ancient commentary, comparing and contrasting it with the antecedents in the pesharim of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the allegorical commentaries of Philo of Alexandria. He develops a model for a dynamic understanding of the literary structure and sociohistorical function of early rabbinic commentary, and then applies this model to the Sifre — to the oldest extant running commentary to Deuteronomy and one of the oldest rabbinic collections of exegesis. Fraade examines the commentary's representation of revelation and its reception at Mt. Sinai, with particular attention to its fractured refiguration and interrelation of Scripture, tradition, and history. He discusses the commentary's discursive empowering of the class of sages in their collective self-understanding as Israel's authorized teachers, leaders, legislators, and judges. The author also probes the tension between Torah and nature as witnesses to Israel's covenant with God.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Basil was one of the most popular of the Greek Fathers amongst the Syrian churches, and his De Spiritu Sancto was twice translated into Syriac. The first version, made in the late fourth/early fifth centuries, survives the three manuscripts of the fifth-seventh centuries and is edited and translated here for the first time. It is a paraphrastic text and so is of theological interest in its own right. Its biblical citations are also noteworthy. The second translation, made in the seventh century, survives only in fragments and these have been collected from florilegia manuscripts and edited in parallel with the Greek text. Introductions to the two volumes explore the Syriac manuscript traditions of this work and their significance, and investigate St. Basil's contacts with Syriac-speaking Christians and the theology of the first Syriac version. Unusually, a detailed orthographic index of textual variants is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you been wondering as a Christian, or non-Christian, what many think -- and expect -- will happen in the "last days" or "end times" with all the talk and focus in the headlines -- and some churches -- about our future? And with all the events taking place in the Middle East, especially Israel? And Iran? Are you confused because of various end-time scenarios and conflicting opinions promoted through popular books on prophecy, the Left Behind series, televangelists, preachers, and others speaking of a great tribulation, rapture, Armageddon, Apocalypse, the destruction of the earth, a new heaven and earth, a second coming, and a millennium? There has been an overload of teaching and information about these things over the last century -- however sincere and cloaked in good intentions -- yet with long-held and deep-seated traditions and doctrines, all borne of a lack of accurate knowledge (particularly the Hebrew and Greek) and information based on compelling evidence. Would you like to know what the Bible actually says about all these issues? For God's Word itself -- "Let Scripture Interpret Scripture" -- and the Holy Spirit are the only necessary interpreters. The Last Days Are Left Behind will challenge your thinking, help to erase the confusion, and provide clarity regarding the present-day purpose of God. Author James Ellis demonstrates end-time truth based logically on solid evidence after a linguistically accurate, biblically consistent, and intellectually honest examination of the Bible's prophetic passages and verses, the original languages -- Hebrew and Greek, the social, cultural, and historical context of Scripture, and the relevance of the audience spoken or written to in God's Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, prophesied for four decades under the last five kings of Judah—from 627 to 587 B.C. His mission: a call to repentance. Among the apostolic fathers, Jeremiah was rarely cited, but several later authors give prominent attention to him, including Origen, Theodoret of Cyr, and Jerome, who wrote individual commentaries on Jeremiah, and Cyril of Alexandria and Ephrem the Syrian, who compiled catenae. Justin and Irenaeus made use of Jeremiah to define Christians over against Jews. Athanasius made use of him in trinitarian debates. Cyril of Jerusalem, Irenaeus, Basil the Great, and Clement of Alexandria all drew on Jeremiah for ethical exhortation. Lamentations, as might be expected, quickly became associated with losses and death, notably in Gregory of Nyssa's Funeral Oration on Meletius. By extension the fathers saw Lamentations as a description of the challenges that face Christians in a fallen world. In this Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume, readers will find some ancient authors translated into English here for the first time. Throughout they will gain insight and encouragement in the life of faith as seen through ancient pastoral eyes.
