Women who smoke or drink alcohol during pregnancy, go without prenatal care or suffer from poor nutrition are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy or childbirth, and their babies are at increased risk for developing a number of health problems. Regular prenatal care presents a key opportunity to inform expectant mothers about healthy behaviors during pregnancy and recognize risk factors associated with the leading causes of infant mortality in the U.S. and Colorado. "Healthy Pregnancies" is one in a series of six briefs published by the Colorado Children's Campaign addressing maternal and child health topics titled "Healthy Moms, Healthy Kids: A Series on Maternal and Child Health in Colorado". Other topics in the series include domestic violence, maternal depression, family structure and teen motherhood, social determinants of health and nutrition. (Contains 42 endnotes.).

Book excerpt: Family structure and maternal age at birth can have a significant influence on the physical, mental and economic well-being of mothers and their children. Children born to single mothers in poverty are more likely to face unemployment as adults, drop out of high school and encounter barriers to accessing quality health care. Children of teen mothers also face an increased risk of a number of adverse long-term outcomes, including becoming teen parents themselves. Although the number of Colorado children living in single-parent families is below the national average and Colorado has seen a decline in teen pregnancy rates in recent years, these two issues remain important ones for the state to address. Efforts to prevent unintended teen pregnancies, help teen mothers finish their education and provide support for low-income single mothers as they work to achieve self-sufficiency are important tools for ensuring the long-term health and well-being of Colorado mothers and their children. "Family Structure and Unintended Teen Pregnancy" is one in a series of six briefs published by the Colorado Children's Campaign addressing maternal and child health topics titled "Healthy Moms, Healthy Kids: A Series on Maternal and Child Health in Colorado". Other topics in the series include domestic violence, maternal depression, healthy pregnancies, family structure and teen motherhood and social determinants of health. (Contains 21 endnotes.).

Book excerpt: Health Insurance is a Family Matter is the third of a series of six reports on the problems of uninsurance in the United Sates and addresses the impact on the family of not having health insurance. The book demonstrates that having one or more uninsured members in a family can have adverse consequences for everyone in the household and that the financial, physical, and emotional well-being of all members of a family may be adversely affected if any family member lacks coverage. It concludes with the finding that uninsured children have worse access to and use fewer health care services than children with insurance, including important preventive services that can have beneficial long-term effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pregnancy and childbirth can be sources of excitement and joy for many new parents, but for some women, the hormonal fluctuations and lifestyle changes associated with pregnancy and being a new mother can feel overwhelming. Although up to 85 percent of mothers may experience mood changes (sometimes referred to as the "baby blues") for a short period of time after giving birth due to changes in hormone levels, for some women, troubling symptoms may persist for months, warranting a more serious diagnosis of depression. In the 12 months following childbirth, women are 50 percent more likely to experience an episode of major depression. Furthermore, between seven and 12 percent of expectant mothers experience depression at some point during their pregnancy. Depression not only interferes significantly with a mother's mental, physical and emotional well-being, it can have a number of detrimental effects on children's healthy development as well. Efforts to identify and treat maternal depression in its early stages are critical to ensuring the long-term health and safety of Colorado's mothers and their children. "Maternal Depression" is one in a series of six briefs published by the Colorado Children's Campaign addressing maternal and child health topics titled "Healthy Moms, Healthy Kids: A Series on Maternal and Child Health in Colorado". Other topics in the series include domestic violence, maternal depression, healthy pregnancies, family structure and teen motherhood and social determinants of health. (Contains 22 endnotes.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adequate consumption of nutritious, wholesome foods is essential to the healthy development of young children. Unfortunately, many households throughout the U.S. and Colorado struggle to put sufficient food on the table. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the percentage of American families who reported experiencing uncertainty over having enough food at some point during the year reached its highest level in 2009. Meanwhile, in 2009, Colorado's five major food banks experienced overwhelming demand and distributed 25 percent more food than in 2008. Even when children in food-insecure households do consume adequate quantities of food, often times the food they eat is low on nutrients and high on calories and fat, contributing to an unprecedented epidemic of childhood obesity across the country. Efforts to increase access to healthy, nutritious foods, especially among low-income families, are essential to improving the health of Colorado's children. This brief is one in a series of six briefs published by the Colorado Children's Campaign addressing maternal and child health topics titled "Healthy Moms, Healthy Kids: A Series on Maternal and Child Health in Colorado". Other topics in the series include domestic violence, maternal depression, healthy pregnancies, family structure and teen motherhood and social determinants of health. (Contains 32 endnotes.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion guide specifically written as a companion piece to The Mother and Child Project that will prompt helpful conversations for book clubs, small groups, and others interested in the topic of women and child health throughout the world and how the church community should get involved. The discussion guide is divided into four sessions-- one to complement each section of the book, The Mother and Child Project. Each session is divided into two parts: “At Home”—several suggested essays to read from the book prior to the gathering to discuss—and “In Your Small Group”—several discussion questions, often supplemented by a pertinent quote from the book, plus a follow-up activity to become personally involved. Dozens of influential leaders have heard the pleas of mothers and children in developing countries. Raising their voices to inspire a movement to increase healthy pregnancies and lower death rates, Melinda Gates, Kay Warren, Bill Frist, Kimberly Williams Paisley, Michael W. Smith and more speak out about why people of faith must get involved in The Mother and Child Project: Raising Our Voices for Health and Hope. Almost 287,000 women die each year because of pregnancy and birth complications. Many orphans are left behind in the wake of this tragedy, and without a mother, many of those children die as well. If only enough people knew. We have the resources to prevent this crisis, but we must take action. Fortunately, Hope Through Healing Hands, a nonprofit organization promoting awareness for healthy mothers and children worldwide, is already spreading the word. Not only can we save lives, reduce abortions, and decrease death rates, but also we can help build healthier, thriving families and bring stability and sustainability to families, communities and nations. The question is, will you join them?

Our nation is troubled by rates of teen pregnancies and newborn deaths that are worse than almost all others in the Western world. Science and Babies is a straightforward presentation of the major reproductive issues we face that suggests answers for the public. The book discusses how the clash of opinions on sex and family planning prevents us from making a national commitment to reproductive health; why people in the United States have fewer contraceptive choices than those in many other countries; what we need to do to improve social and medical services for teens and people living in poverty; how couples should "shop" for a fertility service and make consumer-wise decisions; and what we can expect in the futureâ€"featuring interesting accounts of potential scientific advances.
