Book excerpt: What would a school look like if it was designed with mental health in mind? Too many public schools look and feel like prisons, designed out of fear of vandalism and truancy. But we know that nurturing environments are better for learning. Access to nature, big classroom windows, and open campuses consistently reduce stress, anxiety, disorderly conduct, and crime, and improve academic performance. Backed by decades of research, Schools That Heal showcases clear and compelling ways--from furniture to classroom improvements to whole campus renovations--to make supportive learning environments for our children and teenagers. With invaluable advice for school administrators, public health experts, teachers, and parents Schools That Heal is a call to action and a practical resource to create nurturing and inspiring schools for all children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioterrorism, drug-resistant disease, transmission of disease by global travel . . . there's no shortage of challenges facing America's public health officials. Men and women preparing to enter the field require state-of-the-art training to meet these increasing threats to the public health. But are the programs they rely on provide the high caliber professional training they require? Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? provides an overview of the past, present, and future of public health education, assessing its readiness to provide the training and education needed to prepare men and women to face 21st century challenges. Advocating an ecological approach to public health, the Institute of Medicine examines the role of public health schools and degree-granting programs, medical schools, nursing schools, and government agencies, as well as other institutions that foster public health education and leadership. Specific recommendations address the content of public health education, qualifications for faculty, availability of supervised practice, opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and education, cooperation with government agencies, and government funding for education. Eight areas of critical importance to public health education in the 21st century are examined in depth: informatics, genomics, communication, cultural competence, community-based participatory research, global health, policy and law, and public health ethics. The book also includes a discussion of the policy implications of its ecological framework.

Book excerpt: Despite the growing emphasis on a population-based training and service delivery model for school psychology, few resources exist to provide guidance concerning how such services might be conceptualized and put into place. In this book, the authors propose a public health model for comprehensive children’s mental health services that expands, rather than replaces, the traditional model of school psychology. The background and theoretical perspective for this public health model are discussed as an important way to solve problems and accomplish goals in schools, after which the authors outline and develop a clear, practical procedure for implementing and evaluating programs based on public health ideas. A case study in one elementary school walks readers through the stages of applying a public health model, detailing the key steps of each stage. Finally, the authors consider the changes to the role of school psychologist that will be required to practice a public health problem-solving model. Accompanying downloadable resources contain sample forms, handouts, and other valuable materials that will be of use to school psychologists implementing this public health model in their schools.

Book excerpt: Education and health care significantly influence well-being and health outcomes, especially throughout adolescence. In fact, doctors note that performance in school is highly reflective of a child's current and future health. Despite knowledge of this connection, pediatricians are rarely aware of their patients' school performance and have a limited understanding of the education system. Fostering collaboration and aligning efforts within the health and education sectors is a critical step towards building stronger and healthier communities. On June 14, 2018, the National Academies convened a workshop to discuss how efforts within the health sector can support children's education from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and to explore the barriers between these sectors. The committee also examined case examples of health-education collaboration and opportunities in policy. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A school health program is usually thought of as comprising three broad areas: (1) health education, including both separate and integrated instruction; (2) healthful school environment, including both physical and social aspects; and (3) school health services. The study reported here deals with the school health service area of the school health program. Presented is certain information of a statistical nature regarding health service in school systems of the 3.430 cities in the Continental United States with populations of 2,500 and above. The findings in this study indicate that considerable increase has occurred since the last study in the number of school systems having health services and in the scope of their school health programs. The study also shows that much still needs to be done in the United States if all 30,000,00 school children are to have adequate school health service programs. Following an introductory section that covers the historical background of school health programs and previous surveys, the following topics are addressed: (1) Survey Procedures; (2) Number of School Systems Having School Health Services; (3) Administration and Financing of School Health Programs; (4) Personnel Available for School Health Services; (5) The Medical Examination; (6) The Dental Examination; (7) School Nursing Service; (8) Administrative Relationships of the Health Services to Health Instruction and Physical Education; (9) Extent to Which Schools Call upon Professional Groups for Advice and Council; and (10) Summary. This report should be of special interest to school administrators, school health service personnel, public health officials, medical and dental societies, parent-teacher associations, and many other individual groups. Appended are two questionnaires on surveys of school health services. A bibliography is also included. (Contains 31 tables and 12 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.].
