Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Progress and Administration in the West Indies This epitomised record of the Progress of Sanitation and Sanitary Administration in the West Indies is the outcome of a Visit which I paid to the West Indies at the request of the Right Hon. The Secretary of State for the Colonies to Barbados in March 1909, in order to investigate an epidemic of Yellow Fever which was present in the colony at the time. Whilst making investigations into the subject of yellow fever in Barbados, I was requested by the Governor of the Windward Islands, and the Governors of Trinidad and British Guiana, to prolong my stay and visit their respective territories, and to report upon the health conditions obtaining in these colonies. I gladly availed myself of the excellent Opportunities held out to me, and I trust that the narration of my experiences as described in the present volume will be of use, not only to the medical and business man, but also to the tourist who wishes either to reside in or to visit these beautiful colonies. I hope also that this work will serve as a small introduction to the history of yellow fever in the West Indies, and that it will encourage students to travel in order to investigate diseases on the spoti. Book Synopsis Frontiers of the Caribbean by : Philip Nanton
Download or read book Frontiers of the Caribbean written by Philip Nanton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book argues that the Caribbean frontier, usually assumed to have been eclipsed after colonial conquest, remains a powerful but unrecognised element of Caribbean island culture. Combining analytical and creative genres of writing, it explores historical and contemporary patterns of frontier change through a case study of the little-known Eastern Caribbean multi-island state of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Modern frontier traits are located in the wandering woodcutter, the squatter on government land and the mountainside ganja grower. But the frontier is also identified as part of global production that has shaped island tourism, the financial sector and patterns of migration.

Download or read book The Haunting Past written by Alvin O. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2015. This book places in firm historical perspective the roots of Caribbean dependency, highlighting the ways in which the region has been and continues to be a pawn in Great Power politics and economics. The past is both haunting and daunting, seriously hampering the region's capacity to pursue an autonomous path. The author develops his argument by focusing on how politics, economics and race have shaped Caribbean history and contemporary life. Discussions and analysis include examples from the Anglophone, Spanish, French and Dutch speaking Caribbean islands and countries. Thompson also attempts to provide prescriptions that would free the region from the shackles of the past and place the countries on the path to independence.
