This book was released on 2014 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the WHO handbook on the safe, sustainable and affordable management of health-care waste--commonly known as "the Blue Book". The original Blue Book was a comprehensive publication used widely in health-care centers and government agencies to assist in the adoption of national guidance. It also provided support to committed medical directors and managers to make improvements and presented practical information on waste-management techniques for medical staff and waste workers. It has been more than ten years since the first edition of the Blue Book. During the intervening period, the requirements on generators of health-care wastes have evolved and new methods have become available. Consequently, WHO recognized that it was an appropriate time to update the original text. The purpose of the second edition is to expand and update the practical information in the original Blue Book. The new Blue Book is designed to continue to be a source of impartial health-care information and guidance on safe waste-management practices. The editors' intention has been to keep the best of the original publication and supplement it with the latest relevant information. The audience for the Blue Book has expanded. Initially, the publication was intended for those directly involved in the creation and handling of health-care wastes: medical staff, health-care facility directors, ancillary health workers, infection-control officers and waste workers. This is no longer the situation. A wider range of people and organizations now have an active interest in the safe management of health-care wastes: regulators, policy-makers, development organizations, voluntary groups, environmental bodies, environmental health practitioners, advisers, researchers and students. They should also find the new Blue Book of benefit to their activities. Chapters 2 and 3 explain the various types of waste produced from health-care facilities, their typical characteristics and the hazards these wastes pose to patients, staff and the general environment. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce the guiding regulatory principles for developing local or national approaches to tackling health-care waste management and transposing these into practical plans for regions and individual health-care facilities. Specific methods and technologies are described for waste minimization, segregation and treatment of health-care wastes in Chapters 6, 7 and 8. These chapters introduce the basic features of each technology and the operational and environmental characteristics required to be achieved, followed by information on the potential advantages and disadvantages of each system. To reflect concerns about the difficulties of handling health-care wastewaters, Chapter 9 is an expanded chapter with new guidance on the various sources of wastewater and wastewater treatment options for places not connected to central sewerage systems. Further chapters address issues on economics (Chapter 10), occupational safety (Chapter 11), hygiene and infection control (Chapter 12), and staff training and public awareness (Chapter 13). A wider range of information has been incorporated into this edition of the Blue Book, with the addition of two new chapters on health-care waste management in emergencies (Chapter 14) and an overview of the emerging issues of pandemics, drug-resistant pathogens, climate change and technology advances in medical techniques that will have to be accommodated by health-care waste systems in the future (Chapter 15).

Book excerpt: Despite being a relatively straightforward clinical diagnosis, recognition of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is highly variable, and clinical management is challenging and complex. Written by the world's leading experts in HS, A Comprehensive Guide to Hidradenitis Suppurativa brings together up-to-date scientific evidence on the diagnosis, patho-mechanisms, comorbidities, and multi-faceted medical and surgical interventions for this debilitating condition—in one convenient reference. - Covers every aspect of this complex skin disorder: etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, medical, alternative therapies, a range of surgical options, laser treatments, and comorbidities. - Discusses specific patient populations such as children, women of childbearing potential, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Because HS has higher prevalence in people of skin of color, this patient population is well-documented in the text. - Offers insights into multi-disciplinary care, patient support and education, patients at risk for rapid disease progression, and clinical and translational research. - Features procedural videos covering laser therapies, de-roofing procedures, excisions and closure techniques, cryoinsufflation techniques, and special wound care material selection and techniques. - Includes recent FDA-approved drugs as well as those drugs and therapies that show future promise. - Identifies evidence gaps that provide a springboard to the future innovations in HS care to come. - Edited and authored by global experts who have co-authored 2019 U.S. and Canadian guidelines on hidradenitis suppurativa.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this popular textbook provides a comprehensive overview to chronic illness care, which is the coordinated, comprehensive and sustained response to chronic diseases and conditions by health care providers, formal and informal caregivers, healthcare systems, and community-based resources. This unique resource uses an ecological framework to frame chronic illness care at multiple levels, and includes sections on individual influences, the role of family and community networks, social and environmental determinants, and health policy. The book also orients how chronic care is provided across the spectrum of health care settings, from home to clinic, from the emergency department to the hospital and from hospitals to residential care facilities. The fully revised and expanded edition of Chronic Illness Care describes the operational frameworks and strategies that are needed to meet the care needs of chronically ill patients, including behavioral health, care management, transitions of care, and health information technology. It also addresses the changing workforce needs in health care and the fiscal models and policies that are associated with chronic care. Several new chapters are included in the second edition and reflect the significant changes that have occurred in health care due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chapters covering vaccinations, virtual care, and care of COVID-19 associated chronic conditions have been added. The revised textbook builds on the first editions content that covered providing care to special population groups, such as children and adolescents, older adults, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, by including care approaches to adults with severe and persistent mental health disorders, the LGBTQ+ community, incarcerated persons, immigrants and refugees, and military veterans. Finally, chapters on important and emerging topics, such as natural language processing and health inequities and structural racism have also been added.

Book excerpt: The Handbook on Contemporary Issues in Health, Crime, and Punishment covers many topics on the numerous ways in which mental and physical health and criminal justice system contact influence one another and are intricately intertwined. These often mutually reinforcing dynamics affect a range of health and justice outcomes at individual, familial, group, community, and national levels. Contributions detail this topic from a wide range of disciplinary, theoretical, and international perspectives and rely on various analytical lenses, including quantitative, qualitative, policy-analytic, theoretical/conceptual, and lived experiences. The chapters summarize what is known in each topical area, but as important, they identify emerging theoretical, empirical, and policy directions. In this way, the book is grounded in the current knowledge about the specific topic, but also provides new, synthesizing material that reflects the knowledge of the leading minds in the field. Conceptually divided into 11 sections, a number of contributions describe the unique experiences of women, people of color, juveniles, older populations, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other sub-populations (i.e., people convicted of drug or sex offenses). Where appropriate, the authors provide both big picture and pragmatic policy directions aimed at reducing system contact, health challenges, and inhumane practices. Given its breadth and depth, the Handbook will appeal broadly to academics, practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and students seeking to understand the many ways in which health and justice system dynamics overlap.

Book excerpt: SAFETY AND HEALTH FOR ENGINEERS A comprehensive resource for making products, facilities, processes, and operations safe for workers, users, and the public Ensuring the health and safety of individuals in the workplace is vital on an interpersonal level but is also crucial to limiting the liability of companies in the event of an onsite injury. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported over 4,700 fatal work injuries in the United States in 2020, most frequently in transportation-related incidents. The same year, approximately 2.7 million workplace injuries and illnesses were reported by private industry employers. According to the National Safety Council, the cost in lost wages, productivity, medical and administrative costs is close to 1.2 trillion dollars in the US alone. It is imperative—by law and ethics—for engineers and safety and health professionals to drive down these statistics by creating a safe workplace and safe products, as well as maintaining a safe environment. Safety and Health for Engineers is considered the gold standard for engineers in all specialties, teaching an understanding of many components necessary to achieve safe workplaces, products, facilities, and methods to secure safety for workers, users, and the public. Each chapter offers information relevant to help safety professionals and engineers in the achievement of the first canon of professional ethics: to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The textbook examines the fundamentals of safety, legal aspects, hazard recognition and control, the human element, and techniques to manage safety decisions. In doing so, it covers the primary safety essentials necessary for certification examinations for practitioners. Readers of the fourth edition of Safety and Health for Engineers readers will also find: Updates to all chapters, informed by research and references gathered since the last publication The most up-to-date information on current policy, certifications, regulations, agency standards, and the impact of new technologies, such as wearable technology, automation in transportation, and artificial intelligence New international information, including U.S. and foreign standards agencies, professional societies, and other organizations worldwide Expanded sections with real-world applications, exercises, and 164 case studies An extensive list of references to help readers find more detail on chapter contents A solution manual available to qualified instructors Safety and Health for Engineers is an ideal textbook for courses in safety engineering around the world in undergraduate or graduate studies, or in professional development learning. It also is a useful reference for professionals in engineering, safety, health, and associated fields who are preparing for credentialing examinations in safety and health.
