Download or read book Health and Efficiency (Classic Reprint) written by John Daly McCarthy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health and Efficiency This book has been written for boysand girls in the Junior and Senior High Schools. It aims to pre sent the fundamental principles of Hygiene and San itation in such a way as to lead to better health and greater efficiency. Only sufficient Anatomy and Phys iology has been included to form a suitable background for the-study of the principles of good living. From an experience of over ten years with High School' pupils the author is convinced that too much emphasis has been laid on a technical study of body structure and function and too little on the care of the body. The author believes furthermore that the study of the care of the body is of much more consequence to the High School girl and boy than is a detailed study of its composition. Many teachers attempt problems in Anatomy and Physiology with Secondary School pupils which College and University students find difficult. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Caveman Within Us: His Peculiarities and Powers; How We Can Enlist His Aid for Health and Efficiency Throughout the entire period of history and, from what we may infer, long before that time, no phase of man's social life has found so rich a field for expression as the religious. Because the his tory of mankind has been woven into the warp and woof of innumerable supernatural beliefs, all of which, however, have so much in common, it is fitting that a chapter should be devoted to the appeal of religion to the emotional or primitive side of man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Health Series Early in the history of mental healing these things were vaguely recognized, but little effort was at first made to develop them into a working hypothesis. About twenty years ago a few saw the far-reaching importance of this fact of Mental Imaging and its physical results and began experimenting. The prin cipal points of fact were rapidly developed and proved invariably the actual ex15tence of the law. The road was not a smooth one, however, and the most of those to whom the little then known had been conveyed soon apparently abandoned the new hypothesis for the easier though less efficient system of applying general thought for purposes of treatment, ignoring, mean while, the fact of a particular image being present and active In each individual case. Some mental work was saved, perhaps, in this way, but always with a loss of efficiency, especially in critical cases. Book Synopsis Food Economy in War Time (Classic Reprint) by : T. B. Wood
Download or read book Food Economy in War Time (Classic Reprint) written by T. B. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food Economy in War Time It is well understood by the public that at the present time a rigorous economy in food is not only desirable on general grounds, but absolutely necessary to the success of this country in the task before it. While all may have the wish to economise, many will feel the need of some guidance with regard to the lines upon which economy may be practised without injury to health. Some such guidance this pamphlet is intended to supply. A general economy in the use of food is clearly called for, since its practice will lead to what is now so greatly desirable, an appreciable increase in the current national savings. The country spends some 600,000,000 a year upon its food and a saving of one-tenth of this would be no mean item. But, further, since there is likely to be a serious shortage in particular foodstuffs, and especially in meat, a wise course of economy will include a serious endeavour to substitute the more plentiful for the less plentiful foods. There exists, it is true, a consideration of importance which somewhat complicates the course of simple retrenchment; the necessity, namely, of giving first choice when possible to the foodstuffs which are produced at home, so that our indebtedness to other countries may grow no faster than is necessary during the war. On this point the Government must give the public guidance from time to time. Subject to the qualification just mentioned economy is clearly possible upon each of two lines. Book Synopsis Diet in Health and Disease (Classic Reprint) by : Julius Friedenwald
Download or read book Diet in Health and Disease (Classic Reprint) written by Julius Friedenwald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diet in Health and Disease The continued appreciation of the profession as evidenced by their using this book has added greatly to the endeavor to make the fifth edition of more value than the preceding ones. There are scarcely any subjects in medicine that have received the same amount of attention of recent years as dietetics and the study of nutrition. The literature is voluminous and it would neither be possible nor profitable to try to include everything that has been brought forward. There are many differences of opinion among authorities on many questions which can only be settled by future study and in many cases the views expressed are diametrically op posed. Much of our knowledge on nutrition is fragmentary and the exact value of many contributions cannot be estimated until further investigations have been made. Dietetics has always been a sub jcet much influenced by fads and fancies and much of the literature has little value in consequence. The authors have endeavored to give fully the various facts relat ing to the composition of foods, to indicate as far as possible in the space of one volume the scientific basis, when there is any for the various diets and. To give at the same time practical directions and diet lists which can be used without extensive training. The effects of mental and moral habits on the health of the body have long been known, but the recognition of the effects of bodily health upon the mind and the moral character is of recent date. Bodily health is readily within the control of either the individual himself or his parents. The modern science Of hygiene and sanitation is founded upon the idea of personal responsibility of each individual for both the transmission and the acquisition of most diseases.
