Book excerpt: The traumatic affects of childhood sexual abuse can remain and recur throughout life for women who have not healed emotionally. This book by a family therapist shares stories from 18 women abused as children, explaining that healing can occur at any stage of life, and that healing, itself, occurs in stages. The author offers guidance to recognize the long-lingering potential affects of childhood sexual abuse including depression, anxiety, dissociation, and chronic shock, and she explains steps to take for recovery. Also presented are letters from women who have healed or are in recovery. Sexual abuse by men, juveniles, and female perpetrators is discussed, as is how children may act out the abusive behavior taught by perpetrators. The incidence of abuse by family members is also addressed. Duncan explains the dual dilemma—moral and legal—that women face in exposing a sexual perpetrator within the family when not protected by the legal system due to statutes of limitations. She also discusses controversial topics including false memory and disclosure of memory to the perpetrator.

Book excerpt: “Anyone who had a troubled childhood ought to read this book.”—Anne H. Cohn, D.P.H., Executive Director, National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse Do you have trouble finding friends, lovers, acquaintances? Once you find them, do they dump on you, take advantage of you, or leave? Are you in a relationship you know isn't good for you? Are you still trying to figure out what you want to do when you grow up? Are you drinking too much, eating too much or trying to numb your pain with drugs of any kind? These are just a few of the problems abused children experience when they become adults. You may not realize you were abused. You may think your parents didn't mean it, didn't know better, or that others had it much worse. You may not even have made the connection between the past and your current problems. Outgrowing the Pain is an important book for any adult who was abused or neglected in childhood. It's an important book for professionals who help others. It's a book of questions that can pinpoint and illuminate destructive patterns. The answers you discover can lead to a life filled with new insight, hope, and love. “The best book available to help survivors cope and understand.”—Dan Sexton, Director, Childhelp's National Abuse Hotline “An invaluable aid for adult survivors of child abuse.”—Suzanne M. Sgroi, M.D., Executive Director, New England Clinical Associates

Book excerpt: A path of hope and healing for survivors of childhood sexual abuse A woman who was sexually abused as a child is confronted with many internal questions: Am I worthless? Will I get past the pain? Do I matter to God? These and similar questions can carve a deep hole in an already wounded soul. Too often, the lies of worthlessness are believed, the pain becomes too much to handle, and survivors find themselves making choices that lead to more heartbreak. With over 42 million survivors (both male and female) in the United States alone, the need for a clear path to healing is great. Crystal Sutherland—herself a survivor of CSA—knows that while the recovery process is complex, healing is possible with God’s help. For women who want to progress from simply coping to living abundantly, Journey to Heal guides readers through seven essential steps to recovery found in Scripture. Candid and open about her personal journey of healing, Crystal comes alongside her reader as a friend who understands. Infused with biblical truths, stories of hope from other survivors, and practical wisdom, this book leads women to discover the life of wholeness God has for them.

Book excerpt: From Adena: This book will help you to know that there is hope and a solution to the after effects of childhood sexual abuse. What makes this guide book so unique is that it is the first to utilize the deep wisdom and healing of the 12 Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous for the purpose of recovery from childhood sexual abuse. The 12 Step Program has been a powerful vehicle for millions of people who have used it to anchor them in their recovery. Because these Steps offer such a firm foundation, they are extremely effective for those of us healing from the effects of childhood sexual abuse. I have seen this powerful healing in my own life as well as in my clinical practice. For the purposes of this guide, child sexual abuse is violation of a child to meet the physical or emotional sexual needs of someone they perceive to have more power than they. Often this abuse was from a person the child trusted; one who was supposed to take care of and protect them, not violate them. Practicing the steps has freed me from the reign of the trauma and the offender in a way that I never thought possible. It was necessary for me to follow the suggestions of a sponsor (a childhood sexual abuse survivor who has walked before me) and a mental health professional. Professionally utilizing this philosophy, I have witnessed and been a part of tremendous healing and freedom for my clients they never deemed possible either. Perhaps, you are, like I was, suspicious of the 12-Steps. Is it a religious program/cult or one that forces you to talk about and believe in a "God"? If you are an atheist, agnostic, or have very strong feelings that a belief in a God or a Higher Power is not what you need to be in recovery; I invite you to read on and examine my version of the 12 steps. See if it fits for you. This book is meant to be suggestive only. There are no have-to's so, breathe, take one page and step at a time, and continue to ask yourself, "How free do I really want to be?"

Book excerpt: "Component-based psychotherapy for childhood abuse is not a sequenced model, but it deliberately attends to the following four components: (1) relational, focused on client and therapist attachment styles and relational patterns with the intent of building a secure attachment as the context of the remaining work; (2) self-regulation, not only of emotions but of cognitions and behavior; (3) dissociative parts of self and their identification and elicitation; and (4) narrative construction of a coherent self. CPB does so in a way that is client-centered, flexible, and fluid, yet it is also systematic and has a structure. Each chapter offers observations of false starts, missed opportunities, pivotal interactions, and alternate approaches in response to particular exchanges between therapist and client, and highlights and builds upon interactions and interpretations perceived to bear promise"--
