Download or read book Developing a Dream Destination written by James Mak and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a Dream Destination is an interpretive history of tourism and tourism policy development in Hawai‘i from the 1960s to the twenty-first century. Part 1 looks at the many changes in tourism since statehood (1959) and tourism’s imprint on Hawai‘i. Part 2 reviews the development of public policy toward tourism, beginning with a story of the planning process that started around 1970—a full decade before the first comprehensive State Tourism Plan was crafted and implemented. It also examines state government policies and actions taken relative to the taxation of tourism, tourism promotion, convention center development and financing, the environment, Honolulu County’s efforts to improve Waikiki, and how the Neighbor Islands have coped with explosive tourism growth. Along the way, author James Mak offers interpretations of what has worked, what has not, and why. He concludes with a chapter on the lessons learned while developing a dream destination over the past half century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 1, University of Dalarna, language: English, abstract: Hawaii is a destination that is highly affected by mass tourism with almost 9 million visits in 2016 and therefore tourism is one of the main contributors to the local economy. One of the main Tourism resources in Hawaii is its unique Flora and Fauna. Unfortunately, the large number of tourists visiting Hawaii every year lead to more and more degradation of the environment. It is estimated that about 60 % of the animal and plant species are considered endangered. Furthermore, the relationship between the locals towards tourists is quite tense and a lot of Hawaiians have a negative attitude towards tourists. Reasons for that are that too many tourists can lead to the loss of sense of place, in other words, people feel alien in their own home. Furthermore, mass tourism leads to increased land and living prices and other financial pressures which the local people cannot afford anymore.
Download or read book Detours written by Hokulani K. Aikau and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people first encounter Hawai‘i through the imagination—a postcard picture of hula girls, lu‘aus, and plenty of sun, surf, and sea. While Hawai‘i is indeed beautiful, Native Hawaiians struggle with the problems brought about by colonialism, military occupation, tourism, food insecurity, high costs of living, and climate change. In this brilliant reinvention of the travel guide, artists, activists, and scholars redirect readers from the fantasy of Hawai‘i as a tropical paradise and tourist destination toward a multilayered and holistic engagement with Hawai‘i's culture and complex history. The essays, stories, artworks, maps, and tour itineraries in Detours create decolonial narratives in ways that will forever change how readers think about and move throughout Hawai‘i. Contributors. Book excerpt: When this book first appeared, it opened a new and innovative perspective on Hawaii's history and contemporary dilemmas. Now, several decades later, its themes of dependency, misdevelopment, and elitism dominate Hawaii's economic evolution more than ever. The author updates his study with an overview of the Japanese investment spree of the late 1980s, the impact of national economic restructuring on the tourism industry in Hawaii, the continuing crises of local politics, and the Hawaiian sovereignty movement as a potential source of renewal.

Book excerpt: This book presents the foundations for the future of tourism in a structured and detailed format. The book adopts a comprehensive approach, exploring recent research and the latest developments in practice to inform the reader about instruments and actions that can shape a successful future for tourism. Broad in scope, the book incorporates the perspectives of leading tourism academics, as well as the views of tourism entrepreneurs, destination managers, government officials, and civil leaders. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which addresses the scientific facets of innovation, analyzing the challenges and opportunities that technology provides for organic and disruptive developments in tourism, which will shape its future. In turn, the second part examines socio-cultural paradigms – with a view to dismantling traditional barriers to innovation. It also explores the role of heritage and the ethics of inclusiveness as drivers for sustainable tourism. The third part investigates new ways and means in governance and policy making for tourism. It introduces advances such as strategic positioning, symbiotic partnerships, and innovative management, and closes by presenting governance frameworks for an inclusive and sustainable future of tourism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautiful, empowering, and exhilarating, Melanin Base Camp is a celebration of underrepresented BIPOC adventurers that will challenge you to rethink your perceptions of what an outdoorsy individual looks like and inspire you to being your own adventure. Danielle Williams, skydiver and founder of the online community Melanin Base Camp, profiles dozens of adventurers pushing the boundaries of inclusion and equity in the outdoors. These compelling narratives include a mother whose love of hiking led her to found a nonprofit to expose BIPOC children to the wonders of the outdoors and a mountain biker who, despite at first dealing with unwelcome glances and hostility on trails, went on to become a blogger who writes about justice and diversity in natural spaces. Also included is a guide to outdoor allyship that explores sometimes challenging topics to help all of us create a more inclusive community, whether you bike, climb, hike, or paddle. Join us as we work together to increase representation and opportunities for people of color in outdoor adventure sports.
