Book excerpt: "The Hawai'i State Officials Primer" provides information about special education in charter schools to Hawai'i state officials. It provides state officials an overview of charter schools, how they are defined, and the charter schools' responsibilities as they relate to special education. Understanding what charter schools are, their related responsibilities, and how they impact State agencies and departments is particularly important with respect to special education as special education needs and operations often cut across many different State agencies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990's, charter schools were a new concept being implemented by a few states and communities across the country. Today there are over 3,000 charter schools operating in 40 states and the District of Columbia. The growth of charter schools has compelled that we understand what charter schools are and how they impact responsibilities for special education at the state, local school system and the charter school level. Even though charter schools may be waived from some state and local regulations, the federal government has not permitted any waivers from federal special education requirements for charter schools. In the area of special education, research has documented that charter schools struggle on two fronts: (1) understanding their roles and responsibilities related to special education; and (2) amassing the capacity required to provide special education and related services to students with disabilities (Ahearn et. al., 2001). One lesson that has been learned in the past decade of charter school implementation is the importance of providing clear guidance regarding special education for charter school operators, authorizers, local education agencies (LEAs) and state education agencies (SEAs). Without policy guidance, personnel can be unduly burdened to create answers to each individual situation, resulting in ambiguity or inconsistency among charter schools. This primer has been developed to provide guidance to Maryland's local school systems (charter school authorizers) and charter school developers (operators) as they confront the unique challenges in developing and implementing effective practices to ensure the access and success of students with disabilities in charter schools. Appended are: (1) Charter School Resources; (2) Glossary (Acronyms and Definitions); and (3) Special Education Talking Points: New and Renewal Contracts for Charter Schools. An index of frequently asked questions and an index of key words are included.

This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2020 SPE Outstanding Book Award Winner A 2019 AESA Critic's Choice Award Winner Conservative ideologues have sought to shift the focus from the collective good to the individual good and to redirect the purposes and aims of education away from public benefit and in favor of private enterprise. As such, market-oriented, privatized, and standardized approaches to education reform have worked toward achieving that goal. This book is a primer on how the political right is utilizing various aspects of philanthropy and the political process to influence educational policymaking. In 1971, corporate lawyer and future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell wrote a detailed memo that galvanized a small group of conservative philanthropists to create an organizational structure and fifty-year plan to alter the political landscape of the United States. Funded with significant “dark money,” the fruits of their labor are evident today in the current political context and sharp cultural divisions in society. Philanthropy, Hidden Strategy, and Collective Resistance examines the ideologies behind the philanthropic efforts in education from the 1970s until today. Authors examine specific strategies philanthropists have used to impact both educational policy and practice in the U.S. as well as the legal and policy context in which these initiatives have thrived. The book, aimed for a broad audience of educators, provides a depth of knowledge of philanthropic funding as well as specific strategies to incite collective resistance to the current context of hyperaccountability, privatization of schooling at all levels, and attempts to move the U.S. further away from a commitment to the collective good. Perfect for courses such as: Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education, Education Policy, Educational Policy Analysis, Social Foundations of Education, Philanthropy, Public Policy & Community Change, Philanthropic Studies, Sociology of Education, Politics of Education, Current Issues in Education, Government and the Mass Media, Polarization of American Politics.

Book Synopsis The Seeds We Planted by : Noelani Goodyear-Ka'opua
Download or read book The Seeds We Planted written by Noelani Goodyear-Ka'opua and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Noelani Goodyear-Ka‘ōpua was among a group of young educators and parents who founded Hālau Kū Māna, a secondary school that remains one of the only Hawaiian culture-based charter schools in urban Honolulu. The Seeds We Planted tells the story of Hālau Kū Māna against the backdrop of the Hawaiian struggle for self-determination and the U.S. charter school movement, revealing a critical tension: the successes of a school celebrating indigenous culture are measured by the standards of settler colonialism. How, Goodyear-Ka‘ōpua asks, does an indigenous people use schooling to maintain and transform a common sense of purpose and interconnection of nationhood in the face of forces of imperialism and colonialism? What roles do race, gender, and place play in these processes? Her book, with its richly descriptive portrait of indigenous education in one community, offers practical answers steeped in the remarkable—and largely suppressed—history of Hawaiian popular learning and literacy. This uniquely Hawaiian experience addresses broader concerns about what it means to enact indigenous cultural–political resurgence while working within and against settler colonial structures. Ultimately, The Seeds We Planted shows that indigenous education can foster collective renewal and continuity.
