Book excerpt: Inclusive language remains a hot topic. Despite decades of empirical evidence and revisions of formal language use, many inclusive adaptations of English and German continue to be ignored or contested. Rewriting Language provides one possible answer: by engaging readers with the issue, literary texts can help to raise awareness and thereby promote wider linguistic change.

Book Synopsis Protest and Democracy in West Germany by : Rob Burns
Download or read book Protest and Democracy in West Germany written by Rob Burns and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Republic of Germany has long been held up as a 'model society' on account of its economic and social policy achievements. Largely ignored, however, has been the crucial part played by extra-parliamentary protest in the maturing of democracy in that society. In this, the first comprehensive study of the subject in English, the authors trace the rich history of political protest in West Germany and examine the political role of critical intellectuals. The book will give the reader a good understanding of the crucial changes that have taken place in the political culture of the Federal Republic since the mid 1960s.

Book Synopsis The Radical Subject by : Andrew Plowman
Download or read book The Radical Subject written by Andrew Plowman and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an examination of key autobiographical texts arising from the student movement and the New Women's Movement in the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1960s and 1970s. Existing critical debates about the 'New Subjectivity' of the 1970s, it argues, fail to do justice to the issue of autobiographical writing in German literature after 1968. By contrast, this book makes the case for an interdisciplinary approach to Bernward Vesper's Die Reise, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann's Erkundungen zur Präzisierung des Gefühls, Karin Struck's Klassenliebe, Inga Buhmann's Ich habe mir eine Geschichte geschrieben and Verena Stefan's Häutungen which is able to illuminate these texts both as historical documents and as contributions to the genre of autobiography. The textual analyses at the heart of the study explore the often complex, yet always fascinating relationship between autobiographical practices and the politics of the student and the feminist movements in the Federal Republic.

Book excerpt: For over half a century, the countless organizations and initiatives that comprise the Women’s Liberation movement have helped to reshape many aspects of Western societies, from public institutions and cultural production to body politics and subsequent activist movements. Book excerpt: Beginning with the emergence of German-language literature on the international stage in the mid-eighteenth century, the book plays down conventional labels and periodization of German literary history in favour of the explanatory force of international cultural impact.
