Book excerpt: Hausa is a major world language, spoken as a mother tongue by more than 30 million people in northern Nigeria and southern parts of Niger, in addition to diaspora communities of traders, Muslim scholars and immigrants in urban areas of West Africa, e.g. southern Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, and the Blue Nile province of the Sudan. It is also widely spoken as a second language and has expanded rapidly as a lingua franca. Hausa is a member of the Chadic language family which, together with Semitic, Cushitic, Omotic, Berber and Ancient Egyptian, is a coordinate branch of the Afroasiatic phylum. This comprehensive reference grammar consists of sixteen chapters which together provide a detailed and up-to-date description of the core structural properties of the language in theory-neutral terms, thus guaranteeing its on-going accessibility to researchers in linguistic typology and universals.

Download or read book Studies in Hausa written by Graham Furniss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this book is a landmark in the study of one of the major African languages: Hausa. Hausa is spoken by 40-50 million people, mostly in northern Nigeria, but also in communities stretching from Senegal to the Red Sea. It is a language taught on an international basis at major universities in Nigeria, the USA, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle and Far East, and is probably the best studied African language, boasting an impressive list of research publications. As Nigeria grows in importance, so Hausa becomes a language of international standing. The volume brings together contributions from the major contemporary figures in Hausa language studies from around the world. It contains work on the linguistic description of Hausa, various aspects of Hausa literature, both oral and written, and on the description of the relationship of Hausa to other Chadic languages.

Book Synopsis Adverbs and Comparatives by : Conrad Sabourin
Download or read book Adverbs and Comparatives written by Conrad Sabourin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1977-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are indications that interest in the study of adverbs has been growing steadily in recent years, largely due to the so-called Chomskyan revolution in linguistics which put much emphasis on the study of syntax, but probably also because of the position these adverbs and other particles take within a syntactic string has proved to be much more difficult to determine than had previously been thought. Still another reason for the increase of interest in this topic may be found in the recent trend in linguistics which focusses on communicative competence and actual language use in daily discourse. Although this bibliography has no claim to exhaustiveness, it should nonetheless be useful to researchers working on adverbs and comparatives. The titles selected relate in one way or another to the problems the linguist faces with respect to the adverb.
Book Synopsis Current Progress in Chadic Linguistics by : Zygmunt Frajzyngier
Download or read book Current Progress in Chadic Linguistics written by Zygmunt Frajzyngier and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume consists of papers prepared for the International Symposium of Chadic Linguistics (Boulder, Colorado, May 1-2, 1987). Although the papers are representative of the current work being done in the field of Chadic linguistics, they also reflect the current and past interests and methodologies of general linguistics. The papers included in the volume should therefore be of interest to a general linguist as much as to the Chadicist or a specialist in some other Afroasiatic branch. The papers are grouped by the areas of linguistic fields and methodologies. Papers on syntax are followed by papers on morphology, phonology, and methodology of historical reconstruction.
Book Synopsis Grammaticalization of the Complex Sentence by : Zygmunt Frajzyngier
Download or read book Grammaticalization of the Complex Sentence written by Zygmunt Frajzyngier and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of the study is systematic examination of the processes involved in the formation and evolution of complex sentence constructions in a group of genetically related languages. The Chadic language group, at about 140 languages, constitutes the largest and most diversified branch of the Afroasiatic family. One of the findings of the present work is that languages starting from the same base may develop quite different morphological and syntactic structures. With respect to issues of general linguistic interest, the book deals with motivations for grammaticalization: It is proposed that one of the most important motivations is satisfaction of the principle of well formedness, that is, that every element in an utterance must have its role transparent to the hearer either by inherent lexical properties or by grammatical means. In the present work both aspects of grammaticalization, viz. the emergence of grammatical constructions and the emergence of grammatical morphemes, are given equal weight. In addition to semantic metaphor and metonymy as mechanisms in the processes of grammaticalization, the present work develops the notion of semiotic metonymy, whereby a part of a sign performs the function of the sign. It is shown that semiotic metonymy plays an important role in the grammaticalization of grammatical morphemes and constructions into other morphemes and constructions. The book also shows that unindirectionality is not a governing principle with respect to the development of grammatical morphemes into other grammatical morphemes; rather, there is considerable evidence and theoretical justification for the bidirectionality principle.

Download or read book Introductory Hausa written by Charles H. Kraft and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hausa is the first language of over twenty-five million ethnic Hausa people and an important trade language throughout West Africa. This title is an introduction to Hausa and was created to provide instruction to expatriates both in Nigeria and in the United States. Dialogues, conversations, and drills are among the tools used to teach pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Each lesson centers on a situation—such as a visit to the market, home, or doctor—typical of life in northern Nigeria and southern Niger in the early 1970s. Fireside tales and proverbs provide additional insights into the cultural world and social reality of the Hausa people. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1973.

Book Synopsis A grammar of Gyeli by : Nadine Grimm
Download or read book A grammar of Gyeli written by Nadine Grimm and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This grammar offers a grammatical description of the Ngòló variety of Gyeli, an endangered Bantu (A80) language spoken by 4,000-5,000 "Pygmy" hunter-gatherers in southern Cameroon. It represents one of the most comprehensive descriptions of a northwestern Bantu language. The grammatical description, which is couched in a form-to-function approach, covers all levels of language, ranging from Gyeli phonology to its information structure and complex clauses. It draws on nineteen months of fieldwork carried out as part of the "Bagyeli/Bakola" DoBeS (Documentation of Endangered Languages) project between 2010 and 2014. The resulting multimodal corpus from that project, which includes texts of diverse genres such as traditional stories, narratives, multi-party conversations and dialogues, procedural texts, and songs, provides the empirical basis for the grammatical description. The documentary text collection, supplemented by data from elicitation work, questionnaires, and experiments, are accessible in the Bagyeli/Bakola collection of The Language Archive. With additional ethnographic, sociolinguistic, diachronic, and comparative remarks, the grammar may appeal to a wider audience in general linguistics, typology, Bantu studies, and anthropology. In 2019, the grammar received the Pāṇini Award by the Association for Linguistic Typology.
Book Synopsis Hausa Tales and Traditions by : Neil Skinner
Download or read book Hausa Tales and Traditions written by Neil Skinner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969, this book is a translation of Frank Edgar's Hausa folk stories, which was made primarily in Sokoto Province at the direction of Major John Alder, who in 1910 gave Edgar some Hausa texts written in the Ajemic script for transliteration into Roman characters. Edgar prepared the the first volme of the Tatsuniyoyi for publication in 1911. The Hausa whose folklore Edgar recorded so industriously are the largest ethnic group in Northern Nigeria and number many millions and these tales of past events show how Hausa conceive the histories of their states, the characters of their rulers, and their institutions of government and law. These traditions are thus equally important as documents of folk thought and as historical sources.
