The Black Country has never been a clearly defined area and so whilst most of these haunted locations are most definitely 'Black Country' also included are some ghostly tales from a little further afield such as the haunted Drakelow Tunnels in Wolverley and some stories from the east of Shropshire where the county borders with the Wolverhampton area. Within these pages you will find haunted houses, castles, pubs, hotels and a host of other locations carefully researched and mapped by the author over many years. Where known, buildings which no longer exist at the time of publication are noted in the text. Similarly, photographs taken at the time the stories were collected may not necessarily reflect buildings and locations as they appear now. This is particularly true of public houses. Do take care if you are planning to visit any of these haunted locations in person and please be respectful of both people and places. Very few are private homes but those that are would probably not welcome unwanted intrusion. The vast majority can be visited if you have the nerve but bear in mind some may charge an admission fee if the hauntings are based on a castle or museum site for example. Haunted hostelries of course may be visited during opening hours for nothing more than just the price of a drink.

This book is about what really happened when experienced paranormal investigators were given access to some amazing properties. Mainly due to the immense popularity of television shows such as Most haunted, ghost hunting has changed almost beyond recognition in a relatively short space of time. Whereas we were mostly invited in to investigate phenomena as it was occurring, locations are now more likely to be booked by paranormal event companies. Nowadays, it is possible for anyone to pay for an organised ghost hunt in buildings which previously would only have been open to established research groups. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as there is clearly a great deal of interest and many of the locations in this book now host organised 'ghost hunting' events. However, in the author's experience, paranormal activity is far from reliable and established ghost stories often bear little or no resemblance to what is actually happening when a site is active. We were fortunate during our investigations that we were generally called in because the locations were actively experiencing periods of paranormal activity. This book chronicles well over 25 years of investigating anomalous phenomena in a variety of locations in conjunction with various paranormal research groups. Many were investigated more than once and some on multiple occasions over a long period of time. There are some very well-known haunted locations within these pages. In the Black Country there is Dudley Castle, West Bromwich Manor House, and the Black Country Living Museum whilst further afield we have the Ancient Ram Inn, Belgrave Hall and Woodchester Mansion to name but a few of the fascinating cases recorded here. While property ownership is a cornerstone of the American dream, the status of enslaved people supplies a contrasting American nightmare. Sarah Gilbreath Ford considers how writers in works from nineteenth-century slave narratives to twenty-first-century poetry employ gothic tools, such as ghosts and haunted houses, to portray the horrors of this nightmare. Haunted Property: Slavery and the Gothic thus reimagines the southern gothic, which has too often been simply equated with the macabre or grotesque and then dismissed as regional. Although literary critics have argued that the American gothic is driven by the nation’s history of racial injustice, what is missing in this critical conversation is the key role of property. Ford argues that out of all of slavery’s perils, the definition of people as property is the central impetus for haunting because it allows the perpetration of all other terrors. Property becomes the engine for the white accumulation of wealth and power fueled by the destruction of black personhood. Specters often linger, however, to claim title, and Ford argues that haunting can be a bid for property ownership. Through examining works by Harriet Jacobs, Hannah Crafts, Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Sherley Anne Williams, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, and Natasha Trethewey, Ford reveals how writers can use the gothic to combat legal possession with spectral possession.
