Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years Gleanings From Life's Harvest: A Genuine Autobiography It has been my lot to figure in curious and stirring scenes, and to acquire practical experience of various phases in human existence. But it is only within the last few years that I have been permitted to enjoy occasional hours of unalloyed leisure. Thus, although the idea had often occurred to me that sundry passages of my life might be so embodied in a pen-and-ink sketch, as to be presentable to the public, - it was not until lately that I attempted to realise my thought Neither was I, even then, so enamoured of my own conceptions as to have prosecuted the task seriously, - had I not received unexpected encouragement to do so. I refer to the kind approbation bestowed upon my earliest efforts, by several friends - far more accustomed than myself to judging of such matters, - to whom certain portions of my MS. were from time to time submitted. Their opinion confirmed my own belief that many of the incidents I should have to relate, possessed a natural and inherent interest, - which the narrator's shortcomings could not altogether neutralise. But to affect the style and title of a 'contributor to literature' would be, indeed, a foolish ambition in me; for these memoirs will sufficiently indicate that all regular instruction ceased, in my case, at ten years old. SO by degrees, in about two years, he brought us to poverty; and we were scattered to the winds. After having so nobly performed a brother's and an uncle's part, our worthless relative went off to sea, leaving my mother bankrupt, with her young family, to struggle on as best as she could. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the Latino experience in the United States. The first new edition in ten years of this important study of Latinos in U.S. history, Harvest of Empire spans five centuries—from the European colonization of the Americas to through the 2020 election. Latinos are now the largest minority group in the United States, and their impact on American culture and politics is greater than ever. With family portraits of real-life immigrant Latino pioneers, as well as accounts of the events and conditions that compelled them to leave their homelands, Gonzalez highlights the complexity of a segment of the American population that is often discussed but frequently misrepresented. This landmark history is required reading for anyone wishing to understand the history and legacy of this influential and diverse group.

Book excerpt: In this remarkable debut novel, a boy’s bittersweet passage to maturity and sexual awakening is set against escalating political tensions in Sri Lanka, during the seven years leading up to the 1983 riots. Arjie Chelvaratnam is a Tamil boy growing up in an extended family in Colombo. It is through his eyes that the story unfolds and we meet a delightful, sometimes eccentric cast of characters. Arjie’s journey from the luminous simplicity of childhood days into the more intricately shaded world of adults – with its secrets, its injustices, and its capacity for violence – is a memorable one, as time and time again the true longings of the human heart are held against the way things are.

Book excerpt: When a class-action lawsuit against the US government results in a billion dollar settlement for the aggrieved parties, you’d expect the story to be headline news . . .to be posted on social media everywhere . . . to be adapted to film or even to a popular legal procedural series on TV . . . So why then have so many people never heard of Pigford vs. Glickman? Or the follow-up lawsuit, Pigford II? Or the Black Farmers Case, as the pair of these legal actions is often called? Could it be that the heart-wrenching story of Black farmers in America, and the monumental legal case that brought long-sought justice to them, is rarely told because it reflects so poorly on the US and its treatment of those whose ancestors helped make the nation an agricultural giant in the first place? Whatever the reason, the time to tell the full story has come and the person to share the gripping details is Greg Francis, one of the lead counsels in the historic case that finally helped Black farmers achieve equity. In Just Harvest, Francis narrates the dramatic twists and turns of the legal battle fought and won, and evidences the many years of ingrained discrimination and racism that preceded it. Awareness of this story makes us all witnesses to the history still unfolding— and while parts of what is recounted herein will enrage you, the hope is that this book will also inspire, inform, and motivate you to join the continuing fight for the rights of all Black farmers now and in the future.
