Menolly's a vampire who's still getting the hang of being undead. And me? I'm Delilah, a werecat with a very interesting love life. But life isn't all fun and games. We're on the trail of the demon general who has decided that we've become quite a nuisance... It's Samhain, and the Autumn Lord has called for my training to begin with the Death Maidens...and I find that I like it. But we've got problems: werewolves are going missing and a new magical drug, "Wolf Briar," is being used as a weapon. My dear Chase and I have come to a delicate crossroads. And most dangerous of all: Stacia Bonecrusher has put a bounty on our heads. Now it's a race to take out the demon general before she realizes the sixth Spirit Seal is within her reach...

Book excerpt: To Harvest, To Hunt is a rich collection of writings that reveals how diverse peoples have valued and used natural resources throughout the history of the American West. Drawing on family letters, oral traditions, historical records, and personal experience, the book's contributors offer readers new perspectives on the land they live on, the harvests they consume, and the natural resources they manage. Editor Judy Li weaves a tapestry of cultures and voices--from Pueblo tribes in the Southwest and Chinese fishermen in California to Mexican braceros in Oregon and Basque sheepherders in Idaho--as she details the region's historical dependence on the land and sea. Otter, walrus, abalone, grasslands, timber, and water are some of the vital resources discussed by anthropologists, historians, and biologists in stories that tell how cultures struggle to adapt in changing environments. Acclaimed novelist John Nichols, environmental lawyer Charles Wilkinson, and essayist David Mas Masumoto are among the contributors to this collection. Spanning the last 200 years, To Harvest, To Hunt represents Native American, Native Alaskan, European, and Asian immigrants as varied in their perspectives as the landscapes the book describes. Students, scholars, and general readers will come to appreciate the region's once-abundant resources and find this book an illuminating overview of the dynamic between people and the land.

Book excerpt: For four hundred years, explorers, traders, and settlers plundered North American wildlife in an escalating rampage, but in the twentieth century an incredible turnaround took place. Conservationists created wildlife sanctuaries, restored habitats, and imposed regulations on hunters and trappers. Over decades, they nursed many wild populations back to health. Then, after World War II, something happened that conservationists hadn’t foreseen: sprawl. People moved into suburbs, and then kept moving outward. All the while, well-meaning efforts to protect animals allowed wild populations to burgeon out of control, causing damage costing billions, degrading ecosystems, and touching off disputes that polarized communities. The result is a mix of people and wildlife that should be an animal-lover’s dream, but often turns into a sprawl-dweller’s nightmare. Deeply researched, eloquently written, and perceptively humorous, Nature Wars expresses the need for organic reconnection with our natural ecosystem by offering a provocative look at how Americans created an inadvertent mess.

Book excerpt: Hunting activity and harvest estimates for 10 species or groups of migratory game birds other than waterfowl, based on data collected for 13 seasons (1964-76) in the Annual Questionnaire Survey of U.S. Waterfowl Hunters, are presented. A number of long-term trends were noted. High correlations obtained between certain results in the survey and the results of independent surveys are discussed. The inescapable conclusion is that, although this survey of waterfowl hunters provides valuable data on the subject, a better sampling frame (or frames) for measuring the activity and success of all hunters of migratory game birds other than waterfowl is needed to meet the high standards now being set for the management of this valuable resource.
