Book Synopsis Chlamydial Infections by : Peter Reeve

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1 2 Peter Reeve and Lavelle Hanna lSmith Kline & French Laboratories, Research and Development, 709 Swedeland Road, Swedeland, PA 19479, USA 2Department of Microbiology, S-412, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94143, USA Trachoma, an infectious keratoconjunctivitis due to chlamydial infection, was one of the earliest recognized clinical entities. References to it have been noted in Egyp tian papyri and in Greco-Roman medical treatises. Since those times it has remained a most important eye infection, and indeed trachoma is still a major cause of blindness in rural communities, affecting probably 6 million people (Dawson). The causal agent of trachoma was identified by Halberstaeter and von Provazek in a much-quoted but little-read paper published over 75 years ago. It was after the isolation and demonstration of the growth of the causal agent of trachoma, Chlamy dia trachomatis, by Tang and his colleagues in China in the late 1950s that there was an enormous increase in our knowledge of these agents. The real explosion of knowledge and interest in Chlamydia, however, has been in the last decade. With the growing awareness of the extraordinary commonness of chlamydial infections, not only in developing countries but also in the highly developed countries, has come a considerable interest from all areas concerned with medical science, from clinicians to molecular biologists.

Download or read book The Difficult Hair Loss Patient written by Ralph M. Trüeb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You could read every textbook available on hair growth and disorders, and still not be able to treat hair loss effectively. In every art, there are many techniques, but few principles. The only way to achieve success is to have a firm foundation of principles to build upon, and the right attitude about how to achieve your goals. This book offers a detailed guide that goes beyond the technical aspects of trichology and evidence based medicine, providing specialists and primary care physicians experienced in the basic management of hair loss with the additional know-how they need to master the ultimate challenge of difficult hair loss patients. First, the prerequisites for successful management of hair loss are reviewed – basically, making a diagnosis and understanding the patient and his or her problem. Then, guidelines on the management of difficult dermatologic conditions and of psychopathological disorders associated with hair loss are provided. Lastly, important aspects of follow-up are covered–specifically the problems of adverse effects, patient non-compliance, and their management–before concluding with exemplary case studies of successful treatment of alopecia and related conditions.

Download or read book Instructional-Design Theories and Models, Volume IV written by Charles M. Reigeluth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instructional-Design Theories and Models, Volume IV provides a research-based description of the current state of instructional theory for the learner-centered paradigm of education, as well as a clear indication of how different theories and models interrelate. Significant changes have occurred in learning and instructional theory since the publication of Volume III, including advances in brain-based learning, learning sciences, information technologies, internet-based communication, a concern for customizing the student experience to maximize effectiveness, and scaling instructional environments to maximize efficiency. In order to complement the themes of Volume I (commonality and complementarity among theories of instruction), Volume II (diversity of theories) and Volume III (building a common knowledge base), the theme of Volume IV is shifting the paradigm of instruction from teacher-centered to learner-centered and integrating design theories of instruction, assessment, and curriculum. Chapters in Volume IV are collected into three primary sections: a comprehensive view of the learner-centered paradigm of education and training, elaborations on parts of that view for a variety of K-12 and higher education settings, and theories that address ways to move toward the learner-centered paradigm within the teacher-centered paradigm. Instructional-Design Theories and Models, Volume IV is an essential book for anyone interested in exploring more powerful ways of fostering human learning and development and thinking creatively about ways to best meet the needs of learners in all kinds of learning contexts.
Book Synopsis Diseases of the Chest by : Toshiharu Matsushima
Download or read book Diseases of the Chest written by Toshiharu Matsushima and published by Thieme. This book was released on 2007 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chest x-ray is the most commonly performed diagnostic x-ray examination. Highly illustrated and with only a minimum of necessary text, this new book takes a highly efficient pattern-based approach to evaluating the chest x-ray. Classes of findings, such as increased radiolucency or alveolar shadow: atelectasis, are used to orient the reader toward the underlying medical problem. Tables help to organize the basic findings so as to be able to arrive at a differential diagnosis. While the emphasis is on the chest x-ray, a supporting role is played by helpful CT images, schematics and drawings, and photographs of pathologic specimens, where these may be helpful to understand the chest x-ray appearance of the disease. Chest x-rays are often performed routinely, prior to employment, prior to surgery or during immigration. The examining physician must be in a position to evaluate large numbers of chest x-rays confidently and speedily. This book succeeds admirably in helping the examiner to this end.
