Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Harper Family In 1894, Mrs. Jane Cowles Ford was appointed Historian of the Harper Family; and in 1899, after much conscientious arid pains taking labor she presented the manuscript which she had compiled to the Family Association. A Publishing Committee was appointed, consisting of Mr. Robert A. Austin, of Chicago, as Chairman, Cap tain E. 'r. Palmer, of Omaha, Neb., Mr. E. R. Harper, of Denver, Colo., and Carrie Harper White, of Colorado Springs, Colo. The manuscript was placed in their hands for further action. At the re union of the following year 1900, the Chairman of the Committee reported that, owing to the fact that the Records were received from so many different sources and that there was so much repetition, it would be impossible to print the work in book form until it had been largely re-written. Carrie Harper White was appointed to assume this task, which she has performed ti) the best of her ability, with the material at her disposal. It seems quite eminently fitting that this short sketch of the life of Jane Cowles Ford, who compiled the material for the following Records of the Harper Family should have an important place. This sketch is a tribute of Ford's daughter, Carrie Ford Searle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Harper government's policies are moving our country backwards toward a vision of society, the role of government, and the nature of the federation reminiscent of the 1920s. [...] As the government tried to liberalize markets in grains, the Wheat Board Ceo was fired 14 The Harper Record and the government worked to prevent Board members from speaking out in support of the marketing board. [...] The report of the Iacobucci Commission was originally meant to be submitted the week before the 2008 election was called, but was delayed until the week after the election.9 Both the Liberals who were in power during the events in question and the Conservatives, who are in favour of the anti-terrorist agenda, were thus spared public scrutiny on these issues during the election campaign. [...] Conclusion In the 32 months that the Conservative minority government was in power between 2006 and 2008, the people of Canada faced signifi- cant challenges because of the substance of what the Harper govern- ment achieved and because of the anti-democratic way in which he went about it. [...] In a 1989 memo to Preston Manning, he argued that the core political cleavage in contemporary Western democracies pits taxpayers and private sector-oriented citizens (the ideological right) against the public sector-oriented political class and "tax recipients of the Welfare State" (the ideological left).17 The conserv- ative coalition of the right would include the corporate sector and the privat.

Book excerpt: Always a Song is a collection of stories from singer and songwriter Ellen Harper—folk matriarch and mother to the Grammy-winning musician Ben Harper. Harper shares vivid memories of growing up in Los Angeles through the 1960s among famous and small-town musicians, raising Ben, and the historic Folk Music Center. This beautifully written memoir includes stories of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, The New Lost City Ramblers, Doc Watson, and many more. • Harper takes readers on an intimate journey through the folk music revival. • The book spans a transformational time in music, history, and American culture. • Covers historical events from the love-ins, women's rights protests, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the popularization of the sitar and the ukulele. • Includes full-color photo insert. "Growing up, an endless stream of musicians and artists came from across the country to my family's music store. Bess Lomax Hawes, Joan Baez, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGee—all the singers, organizers, guitar and banjo pickers and players, songwriters, painters, dancers, their husbands, wives, and children—we were all in it together. And we believed singing could change the world."—Ellen Harper Music lovers and history buffs will enjoy this rare invitation into a world of stories and song that inspired folk music today. • A must-read for lovers of music, history, and those nostalgic for the acoustic echo of the original folk music that influenced a generation • Harper's parents opened the legendary Folk Music Center in Claremont, California, as well as the revered folk music venue The Golden Ring. • A perfect book for people who are obsessed with folk music, all things 1960s, learning about musical movements, or California history • Great for those who loved Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock by Barney Hoskyns; and Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon—and the Journey of a Generation by Sheila Weller.

Book excerpt: These two account books span 1800 to 1869 and record transactions related to the publishing of the Centinel during those years. The earliest accounts record Robert Harper leaving behind books, including Mather's Catechism and Doddridge's Sermons, for his brother George to sell when Robert moved to Adams County. In an earlier, undated account Harper purchased a press: "Rec'd of Mr. Robt. Harper the sum of twelve pounds fifteen shillings part of the price of a printing press which was sold by the shff. as the property of Jas. Dickson." Other early accounts list subscribers to the Centinel, bookbinding contracts for books published by Harper, purchases of reams of paper, and payment of taxes. Most of the accounts in the second book record taxes paid by Robert Goodloe Harper.
