Book excerpt: The Harp family has been traced back to the Midlands of England in the 16th century where the name was Earpe. Francis Earpe, born in 1560 in Nottinghamshire, England, was the earliest ancestor found. He is used as generation 1 in this book. By the 3rd generation, the last "e" had been dropped and records show the name as Earp.It wasn't until the 8th generation that the name was changed to Harp. The first immigrant to America was Thomas Earp, Jr. who came in the mid-late 1600's. After the 5th, 6th and 7th generations lived in Maryland and Virginia, Thomas moved to North Carolina in the mid 1700's and began using the spelling "Harp". His relatives who remained in Virginia or Maryland kept using "Earp". Later, one line changed the spelling to "Arp".The Harp's migrated similarly to other immigrant families as land and roads were opened. The Harp's moved from Virginia to North Carolina with the opening of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Trail. They moved from North Carolina to Kentucky and/or Tennessee in the early 1800's after opening of the Wilderness Road by Daniel Boone. By the 1830's, the Harp's had moved to Newton County, Arkansas. The Harp's then moved to Oklahoma in the early 1900's. By the mid-1900's, all of the Harps, except my wife's family, had moved to California .This book reports the results of genealogical research on the Earp/Harp families. The main discussion is of direct ancestors of Phyllis Harp, but also included interesting stories of other Harp descendants (from siblings of the direct ancestor), including the relationship with Wyatt Earp, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton.DNA results support the relationships shown in the Family Tree, including that with Wyatt Earp, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton.

Book excerpt: This is the first history of the harp in Scotland to be published. It sets out to trace the development of the instrument from its earliest appearance on the Pictish stones of the 8th century, to the present day. Describing the different harps played in the Highlands and the Lowlands of Scotland, the authors examine the literary and physical evidence for their use within the Royal Courts and "big houses" by professional harpers and aristocratic amateurs. They vividly follow the decline of the wire-strung clarsach from its links with the hereditary bards of the Highland chieftains to its disappearance in the 18th century, and the subsequent attempts at the revival of the small harp during the 19th and 20th centuries. The music played on the harp, and its links with the great families of Scotland are described. The authors present, in this book, material which has never before been brought to light, from unpublished documents, family papers and original manuscripts. They also make suggestions, based on their research, about the development and dissemination of the early Celtic harps and their music. This book, therefore, should be of great interest, not only to harp players but to historians, to all musicians in the fields of traditional and early music, and to any reader who recognises the importance of these beautiful instruments, and their music, throughout a thousand years of Scottish culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jews-harp is a distinctive musical instrument of international importance, yet it remains one of those musical instruments, like the ocarina, kazoo or even the art of whistling, that travels beneath the established musical radar. The story of the jews-harp is also part of our musical culture, though it has attracted relatively little academic study. Britain and Ireland played a significant role in the instrument?s manufacture and world distribution, particularly during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Drawing upon previously unknown written sources and piecing together thousands of fragments of information spanning hundreds of years, Michael Wright tells the story of the jews-harp?s long history in the Britain and Ireland. Beginning with an introductory chapter describing the instrument, Part One looks at the various theories of its ancient origin, how it came to be in Europe, terminology, and its English name. Part Two explores its commercial exploitation and the importance of the export market in the development of manufacturing. Part Three looks the instrument?s appearance and use in art, literature and the media, finally considering the many players who have used the instrument throughout its long history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Harp music or shape-note singing is as old as America itself. The term sacred harp refers to the human voice. Brought to this continent by the settlers of Jamestown, this style of singing is also known as “fasola.” In Legacy of the Sacred Harp, author Chloe Webb follows the history of this musical form back four hundred years, and in the process uncovers the harrowing legacy of her Dumas family line. The journey begins in contemporary Texas with an overlooked but historically rich family heirloom, a tattered 1869 edition of The Sacred Harp songbook. Traveling across the South and sifting through undiscovered family history, Webb sets out on a personal quest to reconnect with her ancestors who composed, sang, and lived by the words of Sacred Harp music. Her research irreversibly transforms her rose-colored view of her heritage and brings endearing characters to life as the reality of the effects of slavery on Southern plantation life, the thriving tobacco industry, and the Civil War are revisited through the lens of the Dumas family. Most notably, Webb’s original research unearths the person of Ralph Freeman, freed slave and pastor of a pre-Civil War white Southern church. Wringing history from boxes of keepsakes, lively interviews, dusty archival libraries, and church records, Webb keeps Sacred Harp lyrics ringing in readers’ ears, allowing the poetry to illuminate the lessons and trials of the past. The choral shape-note music of the Sacred Harp whispers to us of the past, of the religious persecution that brought this music to our shores, and how the voices of contemporary Sacred Harp singers still ring out the unchanged lyrics across the South, the music pulling the past into our present.

Through the ages, the harp has been a symbol of the lyrical nature of Ireland and the Irish people. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family history is one of the most widely practiced forms of public history around the globe, especially in settler migrant nations like Australia and Canada. It empowers millions of researchers, linking the past to the present in powerful ways, transforming individuals' understandings of themselves and the world. This book examines the practice, meanings and impact of undertaking family history research for individuals and society more broadly. In this ground-breaking new book, Tanya Evans shows how family history fosters inter-generational and cross-cultural, religious and ethnic knowledge, how it shapes historical empathy and consciousness and combats social exclusion, producing active citizens. Evans draws on her extensive research on family history, including survey data, oral history interviews and focus groups undertaken with family historians in Australia, England and Canada collected since 2016. Family History, Historical Consciousness and Citizenship reveals that family historians collect and analyse varied historical sources, including oral testimony, archival documents, pictures and objects of material culture. This book reveals how people are thinking historically outside academia, what historical skills they are using to produce historical knowledge, what knowledge is being produced and what impact that can have on them, their communities and scholars. The result is a necessary revival of the current perceptions of family history.
