Download or read book Toxic Exports written by Jennifer Clapp and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, international trade in toxic waste and hazardous technologies by firms in rich industrialized countries has emerged as a routine practice. Many poor countries have accepted these deadly imports but are ill equipped to manage the materials safely. For more than a decade, environmentalists and the governments of developing countries have lobbied intensively and generated public outcry in an attempt to halt hazardous transfers from Northern industrialized nations to the Third World, but the practice continues. In her insightful and important book, Jennifer Clapp addresses this alarming problem. Clapp describes the responses of those engaged in hazard transfer to international regulations, and in particular to the 1989 adoption of the Basel Convention. She pinpoints a key weakness of the regulations—because hazard transfer is dynamic, efforts to stop one form of toxic export prompt new forms to emerge. For instance, laws intended to ban the disposal of toxic wastes in the Third World led corporations to ship these byproducts to poor countries for "recycling." And, Clapp warns, current efforts to prohibit this "recycling movement" may accelerate a new business endeavor: the relocation to poor countries of entire industries that generate toxic wastes.Clapp concludes that the dynamic nature of hazard transfer results from increasingly fluid global trade and investment relations in the context of a highly unequal world, and from the leading role played by multinational corporations and environmental NGOs. Governments, she maintains, have for too long failed to capture the initiative and have instead only reacted to these opposing forces.

Book Synopsis The Export of Hazard by : Jane H. Ives
Download or read book The Export of Hazard written by Jane H. Ives and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, first published in 1985, written by a distinguished group of legal and public policy experts, documents the growing trade in hazardous industries and toxic products. Hazard export threatens the health and environment of workers and ordinary citizens the world over. It is carried out by transnational corporations, in order to locate their most dangerous industrial activities outside the US, in countries where regulatory controls may be less strict. The issues represented here include occupational safety, environmental protection, international relations and problems of legal control. Attention is focused on the political and economic impact of hazard export on the US, Europe and developing countries, and the book’s critical analysis is addressed directly to the institutional level best suited to constructive action. This title will be of interest to students of business studies.

Book Synopsis Dangerous Trade by : Jennifer Erickson
Download or read book Dangerous Trade written by Jennifer Erickson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations's groundbreaking Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which went into effect in 2014, sets legally binding standards to regulate global arms exports and reflects the growing concerns toward the significant role that small and major conventional arms play in perpetuating human rights violations, conflict, and societal instability worldwide. Many countries that once staunchly opposed shared export controls and their perceived threat to political and economic autonomy are now beginning to embrace numerous agreements, such as the ATT and the EU Code of Conduct. Jennifer L. Erickson explores the reasons top arms-exporting democracies have put aside past sovereignty, security, and economic worries in favor of humanitarian arms transfer controls, and she follows the early effects of this about-face on export practice. She begins with a brief history of failed arms export control initiatives and then tracks arms transfer trends over time. Pinpointing the normative shifts in the 1990s that put humanitarian arms control on the table, she reveals that these states committed to these policies out of concern for their international reputations. She also highlights how arms trade scandals threaten domestic reputations and thus help improve compliance. Using statistical data and interviews conducted in France, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Erickson challenges existing IR theories of state behavior while providing insight into the role of reputation as a social mechanism and the importance of government transparency and accountability in generating compliance with new norms and rules.

Stephenson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, U.S. consumers are recycling their old electronics to prevent the environmental harm that can come from disposal. However, that some U.S. companies are exporting these items to developing countries, where unsafe recycling practices can damage health and the environment. Items with cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) are particularly harmful because they contain lead, a known toxin. In Jan. 2007, EPA began regulating the export of CRT¿s under a rule requiring companies to notify EPA before exporting CRTs. This testimony examines: (1) the fate of exported used electronics; (2) the effectiveness of regulatory controls over the export of these devices; and (3) options to strengthen fed. regulation of exported used electronics. Book excerpt: Electronic waste or E-waste is the most rapidly growing waste problem in the world. It is a crisis of both quantity and a crisis born from toxic ingredients -- lead, beryllium, mercury, and cadmium that pose an occupational and environ'l. health threat. The U.S. and other rich economies that use most of the world's electronic products and generate most of the E-Waste, have exported the E-waste crisis to the developing countries of Asia. The open burning, acid baths and toxic dumping pour pollution into the land, air and water, and expose the poorer people of Asia to poison. The health and econ. costs of this trade are vast and are not born by the western consumers nor the waste brokers who benefit from the trade.

This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Waste Management and Treatment Technology applies the latest research for designing waste treatment and disposal strategies. Written for researchers who are exploring this emerging topic, the book begins with a short, but rigorous, discussion of electric waste management that outlines common hazardous materials. such as mercury, lead, silver and flame-retardants. The book also discusses the fate of metals contained in waste electrical and electronic equipment in municipal waste treatment. Materials and methods for the remediation, recycling and treatment of plastic waste collected from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are also covered. Finally, the book covers the depollution benchmarks for capacitors, batteries and printed circuit boards from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and the recovery of waste printed circuit boards through pyrometallurgy. Describes depollution benchmarks for capacitors, batteries and printed wiring boards from waste electronics Covers metals contained in waste electrical and electronic equipment in municipal waste Provides tactics for the recycling of mixed plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment
